Underwaterbob,

I miss Saturday morning cartoons. Sure, looking back, a lot of those cartoons sucked, (quality is on average much higher these days) but it was more about the ritual and the expectation. Saturday morning TV was for me.

Underwaterbob,

I bought my wife an HP Stream 13 some years back. It came with Windows 8 installed. Which worked just fine until updates bloated it so much it literally took up the entire (paltry) SSD. Windows 10 came out and it offered a free upgrade, which would have been smaller. Unfortunately, every time I tried to do that, it just complained it didn’t have the space to make the switch. I rolled it back to an older Windows 8 and disabled updates to try and keep using it. It complained constantly. I finally deleted the shit out of Windows and installed Lubuntu. It’s worked since then without issue.

Underwaterbob,

Hahaha! “We need access to your private data to protect your privacy.” We’ve come full circle.

Underwaterbob,

The point where Star Wars totally lost me was when it turned out C3PO was fucking built by Darth Vader when he was a kid. I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief anymore. I loved the original three movies when I was a kid, but damn, it’s completely left me behind at this point.

Underwaterbob,

I just switched from Ubuntu, which I’ve been using for almost twenty years, to Mint 21.3 and I’m impressed. Not only does it seem to have solved my printing problems (at least with one day of use so far, but I’ve had zero failures compared to multiple failures per day with Ubuntu), it just seems snappier (or is that snapless?) and smoother overall. Just dumb little things like remembering my sound device settings after reboot and letting me know the printer was out of paper. Ubuntu just seems clunky by comparison now. Hopefully it isn’t just the honeymoon phase.

Underwaterbob,

a horse

They eat horse in Korea, too. It’s just not as widespread as dog, so no ban yet.

Underwaterbob,

They’re not quite as terrible as their reputation. Yeah, they’ve definitely got some of the worst episodes of Trek ever, but there are good ones in there, too.

Underwaterbob, (edited )

Sooo… Millennials talk like lolcats?

Underwaterbob,

Yeah, as far as child stars go, he turned out more well adjusted than the vast majority it seems.

Underwaterbob, (edited )

I’m too lazy to make images, but also:
Spock on a dock
Kirk on a clerk
Pavel on a gavel
Uhura’s got me stumped though.

Underwaterbob,

1999 was 24 years ago. 24 years before 1999 was 1975, when Wish You Were Here, Physical Graffiti, and Toys in the Attic all came out. Those were definitely classic rock then.

Underwaterbob,

I never realized they were the same person before. I went to Wikipedia and found:

Schultz has also written for Breitbart where he likened liberalism to mental illness, and has similarly suggested that President Barack Obama’s administration may intend to force sex reassignment surgery onto him and others.

Sigh… Turns out he’s a raging conservative.

Underwaterbob,

Then, in your forties you drink a single beer, feel nothing, and have the mother of all hangovers. I’ve more-or-less given up drinking at this point.

Underwaterbob,

Well, do they believe the crazy bullshit, or are they just an opportunist looking to make connections? Church is lucrative.

Underwaterbob,

Yeah, and it’s people arguing about cars, Trump, rich people, work, Linux distros, not pooping, and communism.

Underwaterbob,

The year Titanic came out, I finally decided to see what the fuss was about in it’s 18th week playing (a new record!) in our local theater. I took my seat, and there were a couple of teenage girls a few seats over from mine. They started sobbing during the opening credits. I’m fairly certain they’d seen the movie already. Probably more than once.

Underwaterbob,

It was weird. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS printed perfectly. First try, every time. Barring printer issues not related to the OS anyway. Then, 20.04 dropped, and I couldn’t print anything. For two years, I had to move files to the Mac on the front desk to print at work because it refused to print anything. Same printer. I tried a few fixes people had posted, but none worked for me, and most fixes were for HP printers and mine is an Epson, which no one reported any problems with.

Now, with 22.04, I get intermittent printing. It works more often than not, but I’d estimate my print jobs get randomly canceled about 30% of the time. Which is annoying, but not deal-breaking since I usually just push it through again, and it works. To be fair, it might be because of wireless printing, but I doubt it since like I said, 18.04 worked flawlessly with the exact same setup. I might just try out Mint sometime and see if it makes a difference.

Underwaterbob,

All the talk of Mint lately. Looks like my fifteen-year Ubuntu streak may be coming to an end. Will I, decidedly not a power-user just an Internet browser, occasional game player, Csound programmer, Libreoffice user notice a difference? Is Mint better at printing? That’s the only real problem I’ve had with Ubuntu over the years.

Underwaterbob,

In my hometown, we had “Mr. Noshirt”. He’d walk everywhere in any weather either without a shirt on, or with a flimsy dress shirt unbuttoned the whole way. In Canada, so it got cold. Rumors were “couldn’t feel cold” or the more likely “mental health problems.”

Underwaterbob,

I’m re-watching DS9 for the third time or something, but I’ve never seen anything released after Voyager except for the Abrams movie travesties. Am I still a Trekkie?

Underwaterbob,

I’ve hated him since Lost. Possibly even Alias. Stupid mystery box bullcrap, Yeah, some unresolved mystery is fine. Your entire show shouldn’t revolve around boatloads of them being insufficiently explained.

Underwaterbob,

Which may be the case, but being immediately dismissive like you are isn’t exactly going to get them on your side now, is it?

Underwaterbob,

I’ve been meaning to start it for years now, but I’m actually kind of intimidated by it at this point.

Underwaterbob,

Overtones. Bowed string instruments have a lot of harmonics. I can’t imagine it sounds very good, but I bet it’s interesting.

What is something good happening in your city/town/local area?

My city redesign our downtown roads to have a whole bunch of horrible one ways in the 50s, and we are FINALLY changing back to how it was while making improvements like bike lanes. The first attempt at bike lanes with the current layout was horrible, basically death traps everywhere... Hoping for something better this time, lol....

Underwaterbob,

I live on Jeju-Do: a South Korean island with a population of ~700'000. Half of the registered electric cars in all of Korea are on the island. Anecdotally, just driving down the road to work, every third car I see is electric. We've got electric buses, scooters, and bikes all over the place too. If only we could stop the pollution blowing over from China (not that Korea is innocent of polluting their own air.)
