XTL,

I think that there is a massive gap between competitive sports (almost inherently toxic) and massively online games (juvenile masses combined with lack of moderation) and, for example, speed running and challenge games or tabletop and board gaming which are all likely to be more wholesome and positive even if there is a competitive angle.

There is probably more visibility on the first side. Maybe because that’s where the money is. And I very much agree that this was a nice story and I hope there will be more of this kind of inspiration shown in public.

XTL,

Any instructions that say sudo curl should be thrown out immediately.

XTL,

That is a good mindset and you should hold on to it. Of course a gui can install a keylogger for you just as easily if not more so.

Trusted install sources, usually called repositories, are the way. Chances of malware exist, but they would require some spectacular shenanigans or conspiracies to set up.

The point is that an HTTPS request does not need root permissions. Other steps might, and that’s indeed high risk.

XTL,

And they send maps that the others can use.

XTL,

Wait till you get transparent pngs. It’ll be like it should have always been.

XTL,

Glass can do that with internal or external stress. One of the reasons I absolutely hate it as a material.

XTL,

So… what does one ride a storm out with? On?

XTL,

So, have they found the Bigfoot in the code?

XTL,

Well, they’ve probably been markets for some hundreds of years before they dug a parking cave underneath. Old cities especially get increasingly cramped with time.

Does "Rock music is evil / of the devil" have racist roots?

As a Christian most of the circles I’m around are pretty chill…no stone-cold fundamentalists. But I have been around people (and even had family members) who are 100% convinced that rock music is evil and will lead people to engage in witchcraft and draw pentagrams all over their home....

There is an answer to any question that is simple, quick, and wrong.

No. I’m not Clear enough to remember.

Though this reminds me that I remember getting my first skis. But don’t remember learning to ski in particular. Skis and snow has just always been there. I think I know where they are still today.

Is Ubuntu deserving the hate? (lemmy.ml)

Long story short, I have a desktop with Fedora, lovely, fast, sleek and surprisingly reliable for a near rolling distro (it failed me only once back around Fedora 34 or something where it nuked Grub). Tried to install on a 2012 i7 MacBook Air… what a slog!!! Surprisingly Ubuntu runs very smooth on it. I have been bothering all...

XTL,

It’s unstable in the sense that it doesn’t stay the same for a long time. Stable is the release that will essentially stay the same until you install a different release.

Sid is the kid next door (Iirc) from Toy Story who would melt and mutilate toys for fun. He may have been a different kind of unstable.

Neither is unstable like an old windows pc.

XTL,

Arcade games or handheld or video games didn’t have any storage. Even on old home computers if you’d want to program in a save feature, you’d need to instruct the user to change to a fresh cassette for save. Then back to the game tape for reloading the game. And rewind and find the save on top of that to load.

It took a long time before floppies became ubiquitous, even longer for hard disks.

XTL,

Except IE. Or opera. Or whatever new scam brave tries next.

XTL,

Let alone your only archive solution.

Largest Study of its Kind Shows Outdated Password Practices are Widespread (www.cc.gatech.edu)

“More than half of the websites in the study accepted passwords with six characters or less, with 75% failing to require the recommended eight-character minimum. Around 12% of had no length requirements, and 30% did not support spaces or special characters.”

XTL,

That’s probably about correct, horse battery staple.

You won’t get more than a few mA out of an alkaline, but heat does build up. (Internal resistance)

A NiMH on the other and can give over 10 amps. They’re a seriously risky thing to leave around loose metal bits. Or attached to thin wires.

XTL,

I don’t nas, but I suggest a combination of offline drives, cloud services or remote hosts, and just ignoring data that is easy to recreate like builds and software installs.

The key is to keep the data organized in such a way that you know which parts deserve which strategy.

XTL,

In a lot of places, a prepaid is just something you can buy, cash, in a shop. No papers please.

XTL,

Me too. I’ve run 30 years with ext and bsd filesystems with no failure. Many years with various UNIX native fs as well. But Linux xfs, reiserfs, btrfs all have resulted in catastrophic failure within a year on several machines. They’re permanently off my list, but I have some hope that someone will get a new fs right.
