It’s easy. After running setup-alpine and rebooting with a bar install there is built-in script setup-desktop that lets you install Gnome, Plasma or Xfce.

You can find install scripts like Alpine Suck around the web git.sr.ht/~bt/alpine-suck

Got like 3 hours sleep last night, slept in, ate too fast, stomach ache all day due to that. Other than that, easy work day and the week is light on work to boot. Might get snow where I live too. That would be…cool.

Desktop icons not loading (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

Somehow it might be possible the adwaita-icon-theme package was removed and not reinstalled.

You could also try running dconf reset -f /org/gnome/ and rebooting to see if that helps.

Strawberry if I had to have something visual with buttons.

cmus right now because it loads my rather large library in a split second. mpd works great as well.

More important than the player for me is sorting, though. Beets is my saviour. I could never sort the 5 or 6 albums I get by hand and tag them by hand.

I used to like deadbeef as well, quod libet is great. There really is something for everyone when it comes to something for music. If only there were as many great email clients.

Probably a private school thing in that case. I haven’t taught at a public uni since 2008, but parents wouldn’t have tried to get involved back then.

I cannot contact parents, but administrators will without question.

This shocked me as well because my parents weren’t involved with my work or education after finishing high school.

In France, this is not the case. The majority of people are supported by their parents until the end of secondary education, especially when it comes to my students who are all in private institutions.

It is extremely rare for a student to have a job, for example.

Parents do get involved for even minor things, and will come stomping into the school flanked by a lawyer.

Why would they be involved?

Because they pay. That’s all.

Now, university is practically free and lots of students get a bursary (not a loan) to help them along. But, their parents will still pay rent sometimes because a full-time student with a job is seen as the most amazing thing here.

I will often bring up this stark contrast to how when I was a student I had 4 different jobs and still ended my studies 60k in debt and didn’t even see my parents during the school year, let alone get any money from them.

how do i efficiently attach audio to an image

hi all, ive tried using shotcut and kdenlive but the outputted file ends up being huge. i have a single image and want to put audio on top (releasing a song) but these programs end up making video files where they render the same image on each frame and the files end up being huge. what is the best way to achieve my use case of...

What is a small .EPUB reader that is easy to install for my small Puppy remaster?

My question is basically the title. I’m making my own Puppy Linux remaster and it already has a .PDF reader for it that is very small. I think it’s called Evince? It has a native GTK UI and starts in a second, uses very little RAM and CPU. Now I need a .EPUB reader. I’ve seen a couple different .EPUB reader apps out there...

☝️ this is correct. GSF calls home and /e/ is a different beast. The founder of Murena and /e/ is on Fedi so you could drop him a message on Mastodon and see how he answers.

For a regular uninformed user like myself (I just use the stock ROM on my phone because I am stuck with it) I read that as:

We made this experience as frictionless as possible at at a cost.

The friction here would be banking and/or tap-to-pay apps that I think cause some issues for some people (please correct me if I am wrong).

So, you would lose something that is offered by GrapheneOS and gain a different interface and access to apps that have a hard requirement for GSF.

If you go with Alpine, the general setup instructions should be OK and similar to other distros.

Get the image on a USB, boot from USB, run setup-alpine and choose system-disk mode. Possibly encrypted if you think you need that.

After install you’ll be dropped to the terminal again.

There are some post install notes here wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Installation#Post-Insta… but you can run setup-desktop and get it to install a usable Xfce desktop, for example.

The LXQt DE is a good choice for older devices. The wiki has a guide for it but needs a slight update. It should still work but may require switching to edge.

Puppy Linux is a fine choice too if your computer is a little on the old side. Lite, Peppermint, Trisquel, antiX, and a slew of others are worth looking at.

I do agree that a new user should use something like Fedora first. But OP wants Alpine.

How safe are grammar editing tools?

Without naming names, there’s a well advertised grammar editing tool that’s available either as an app download or browser extension. This is something I’d value for a number of reasons (good grammar is important!) but I’m super cautious about anything I’m giving permission to watch what I’m typing....

You can run LanguageTool locally. While it isn’t as great as the paid version, I use this to check nearly everything I write for work in my native language, and in the other languages I speak

caderek.github.io/gramma/ is a cli spellchecker that has the option of installing a LT server locally. Not ideal if you are writing things with Pages/Word/etc., but a possible backup.

I have done this before. And, yes, you can just delete apps from your smartphone and carry on…

But, the fact is that McLuhan was right, the medium is the message. So, the having the smartphone will change your behaviour.

A smartphone in your pocket is just a communication device, but it can be used to access content. As such, it is a medium that has a social effect; that is, a smartphone enables people to create spaces that would otherwise be moments of calm, socialising, rest, work, or boredom. A smartphone creates an environment by its mere presence.

This person used a TCL Classic, which is a low-powered Android device. You can even sideload apps with adb.

It likely also includes Google components/packages. So, if someone wants to use this to escape big-tech, data is still being collected. The keyboard app on these types of phones is usually Kika. According to exodus, there are 14 or so trackers built-in (see reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/…/latest/).

Like I said, I tried this different times: I had a Nokia 800T, and 2 versions of the Punkt. phone. It is a fun experiment. I did spend less time on social media. I was more present. But, at some point, you do need a full smartphone for banking, work, and so on.
