I haven’t owned a Windows machine in over a decade. If someone wants help, this is my response because I have not kept up with the changes, for lack of any need or desire to do so.
“Can you help me with my computer?”
“If it is running Linux or BSD, or you want it to, sure. If not, I’m not the guy for the job.”
Mid-30s millenial here. Being an adult, instead of a 20-something young adult is overall pretty great. Having experinence and maturity makes a lot of shit easier, especially dropping uninportant bullshit. Definitely the best decade of my life thus far.
The downside: unaddressed physical, emotional, and psychological “battle damage” is cumulative (I only started treatment for ADHD at 30). So, if you have any untreated issues or trauma, it’s best to take them on earlier so that you don’t have to play catch-up.
That said, enjoy your life and keep in mind that, short of severe injury or imprisonment, you are not going to irreparably damage your future (repair is possible in some of those cases anyway). I didn’t start my career (completely unrelated to my degree) until I was about 26. My wife, who is a year younger than me, earned her union card in her trade last year, after dealing with nearly 30 years of untreated physical and psychological issues. Despite this, we’re both happier on average than any other point in our lives.
Oh man. I was miserable in my teens and much of my twenties. The majority of the time that I think back is to unfairly judge myself on data or maturity that I didn’t have and cringe (which is a habit that I’m working on breaving). Overall sound advice, from my experience though.
I tried fre:ac but got an error from cddb when trying to connect to the database. Looking to rip to both FLAC and to Opus. Ideally with the latest codec updates....
I think that the solution is automated rail transit. Being in a dedicated place with lower likelihood of encountering people removes nearl every issue that self-driving cars have. Being automated means that 24/7 schedules are possible. If there are enough trains and high enough saturation, need for cars and even taxis is removed.
Removing the driver mainly removes barriers to running late - meaning things like drunk driving can be significantly reduced since transit in the US is virtually non-existant at drunk’o’clock, effectively pressuring people into bad decisions when their judgement is the poorest.
If a route is uneconomic, that’s going to be the case without a driver too.
Infrastructure is vital to economic and other activity. It needs to be treated as an investment or necessary cost, not a business. Doing otherwise inevitably results in collapsing bridges, toxic spills, and other symptoms of neglect as corners are cut to maximize profit.
Absolutely, I agree. What I was trying to convey is that to me it never feels like I am enough.
I hear you. I absolutely hated most of my twenties and teen years due to loneliness. But, it’s important to remember that online dating platforms are pure garbage. They are run by business people with business goals, not to actually help people connect and find lasting relationships - that loses them customers. Not to mention the vapid, shallow culture that has been cultivate, by those running them. The number of bots and plain awful people that you are lucky to avoid is ridiculously high because many are little more than scams to extract money from lonely guys.
I know rejection is part of the game.
That’s part of the beauty of being a human that these companies desperately try to hide. We have the choice to not play the bullshit games. It makes life much nicer.
However, it does hit hard—it affects my self-esteem. That is my problem and I need to work on that.
I know this experily. You are a worthwhile human being, and deserve love and happiness. Sure, I’m just some random dude on the internet and you have no reason to believe anything that I type or the sincerity on my words but, it’s true.
So much of what is pushed in modern culture is done so just for the sake of making people miserable so that they buy more bullshit. Rom-coms are the fucking worst (though I do still enjoy them occassionally). Everything in them surrounding masculinity and courtship is pure dysfunctional, toxic drek.
Want a functional, loving relationship that will last? Find someone who is compatible and has shared interests. If you are not driven by competition and conquest, don’t “chase” someone who doesn’t show interest - it’s a waste of your time and will probably make them uncomfortable. If you are, get your peacocking and fashion game on-point.There is no one way of finding a good partner except for being your best you and ignoring 99% of pop culture romance.
Hone yourself into the version of you that you most want to be and the people who appreciate that find your traits, interests, and personality attractive will likely come into your life as a natural consequence of your actions.
All the best for a very happy New Year. Keep rocking and being your badass self.
I’m glad that I could be of help. One recommendation that I would have is to reframe that from a quest into something more of a journey. Yes, it is what you desire but, from personal experience, treating it as a central goal in life can make it easy to miss the forest for the trees, risk staying in poor matches, and may make it more of a challenge to find a compatible partner.
For the first to, you may overlook or be overlooked by potential matches due to focusing on the idealized goal. This also means potentially getting caught in a poor or potentially abusive relationship for lack of seeing that things could be better. Additionally, successful relationships take interpersonal skills and self-knowledge that are hard to develop without experience - think of the proverb of two potters, one spending a year, making the best pot that they can, the other spending a month on each pot. The second potter will likely end up more skilled and making a better pot due to the learnings of multiple failures over the year. It’s similar with any skill in reality; trying and failing with relationships is a good thing because it gives you more data to work with.
Finally, try to think about what things may be like from the perspective of a potential partner. Would you want to be with someone whose life goals were “be in a relationship” or someone who wants to invent something, or see places seldom seen by others, or contribute to the understanding of the natural universe, or play music and make friends in the local community, or help neglected animals, or have a blast painting tiny monster figurines. Trying to be the you that you want to be and is in line with your interests and ideals will make you more interesting to others, including potential relationship partners.
It’s easy for nerdy guys to get caught up in things and fall into traps of despair and loneliness - I know from experience, which is why I try to lend support and advice to others. But, being nerdy is also a bit of an advantage, despite pop culture overtures to the contrary. Being interested in unusual thing can make you interesting.
Does anybody know why dbus exists? I’ve been wracking my brain trying to come up with a usecase for dbus that isn’t already covered by Unix sockets....
Sockets are effectively point-to-point communication. Dbus is a bus. Your question is similar to “what is the point of I2, or an ATA bus when directly wiring ICs gets the job done”. Both have different strengths and weaknesses.

Probably would fall into scope of a compositer in Wayland, rather than the protocol. I suspect it originated with old CRT displays. Sometimes they can appear scan diagonally.
Even without that usecase, I think it’s great to have around in order to support novel displays and display-like devices.
Exactly. Everyone knows that Jesus navigates based his position relative to the the absolute position of celestial bodies. That and there is no way that a simple, unarmored satelite would make it past his point-defense batteries and compromise his re-entry trajectory.
I’m unsure that I would find this useful. While I might want a good solution to view web content on the terminal (with a modern, w3c standards rendering engine) so that I can do less outside of the terminal, I don’t think I see the utility of using web tech to power my zsh and vim usage. I am enjoying my balance of utility and perf with kitty.
I hope you have a good experience and share your findings.
At work, I have to run a command in an AWS instance. In that particular instance only exists the root user. The command should not be executed with root privileges (it executes mpirun, which is not recommended to run as sudo or the machine might break), so I was wondering if there is a way to block or disable the sudo privileges while the command is running. As mentioned, the only user existing there is root, so I suppose "sudo -u" is not an option.
You’re not wrong for trying to find another solution. Unfortunately, I think, in this case, your up against fundamental Linux permissions. One possibility would be running the work in a container with reduced capabilities but, it really is going to depend on what behaviors you’re trying to avoid.
Overall, it’s likely a better idea to re-install because noone should be running stuff directly as root in the majority of production scenarios.
Also, a disturbing number of misogynistic people in web design/web dev needing help from technical support. It was rather shocking and educational for me, as a cis male, to work as a support supervisor. I never anticipated the level of sexism and harassment that my female techs faced on a daily basis.
Everything from asking of they want to do porn to “can I talk to a man”. I had several techs that had to change the names that they used for customer communications to male or neutral ones due to the severity on the unending sexism despite regular warnings to the customers that this behavior would not be tolerated.
That’s primarily because boomer politicians replaced effective literacy programs with programs that allow those with learning disabilities and other intellectual impairments to navigate the world. This means that many gen Z and younger millennials were robbed of quality education that enables self-directed study and critical analysis of text. Primarily so that connected education product companies could make a profit.
The two are inextricably linked. Deep computer literacy requires regular literacy as well as the ability to learn and analyze independently. Both of the latter, when dealing with computers, rely on the former. There’s a literacy crisis in the US with significant downstream impacts that’s largely been ignored because the cause is profitable.
I’m not sure that we’re on the same page or set of definitions. Of course not every skill depends on linguistic literacy.
Take skateboarding, for example. Yes, there could be some theory, potentially (I’m clearly not a skater) but much of the skill is in learning how to physically operate the board as an extension of one’s body. This is a “natural” sort of skill that meshes well with our evolved neurobiology (ie perception, motor function, physical coordination, etc.)
Now, let’s look at written language. It is NOT a “natural” sort of skill. It MUST be taught and learned with effort because our neurobiology has not evolved to account for the sorts of tasks involved. Writing is an abstract thing that requires abstract thinking to really understand - the word “lion” is not literally a lion, which is not a simple task to grasp for an untrained brain.
Next, computing. A computer and what it does is incredibly abstract. A bunch of pieces of specially-shaped stone, use an invisible force to represent presence and absence (the concept of “zero” is only in recorded use for the last 3800 years or so and ancient greeks didn’t even have a symbol for it). By performing ever more complex mathematics on these stones, we can create tools that people can use to perform abstract, and in some cases, physical work. And these interactions are nearly all performed based upon instructions that people write in text-based languages that don’t even match up with natural languages.
Even if not, technically illiterate people can actually read a button or menu item.
And this is part of the origin of the issue inflicted upon younger people. In the US, literacy programs were largely replaced by programs literally designed to help people that are illiterate take care of their basic needs in a society that depends on written language.
Another way of putting it is: An illiterate person can press a button on a touchscreen to order a hamburger, because either there is a symbol of a hamburger, or, they were taught to recognize the shape of the word “hamburger”. But, they might not actually know what the price actually means or, they may mistakenly order a plane ticket to Bamberg, Germany, because the words look alike. If they have a computer and an error dialog box pops up, will they know how to figure out how to fix it? Will they install “anti-virus” software that opens in a popup because it looks similar?
How about if they want to learn how to write a resume? How will they do that? What about figuring out how to write a mod for Minecraft? Or Enterprise software? These are all things that are dependent on linguistic literacy. Reduction in the general population’s literacy makes people easier marks for cons and significantly reduces their ability to learn new things as well as effectively operate computers for anything but games and scams.
ETA: I’m far from an expert and would really recommend looking into what LeVar Burton of Reading Rainbow and Star Trek fame is saying about this problem.
