Wow that's going to be a rabbit hole. How amazing. The first one I watched was the rocket skateboard. (specifically this one: https://youtu.be/6JsOoQTHRuA )This man is going to die doing what he loves. The rocket sleigh was pretty insane too. Coolest new thing I've seen in a long time. Thanks for saying who it was.

That looks to be a sausage, egg, and cheese Croissan'wich they are advertising for 99 cents, and another concrete example of the massive corporate greed of today:

(Or are we all making 4x today what we were in 2001 for the same jobs? That's a rhetorical question, we are not.)

Edit: 1 dollar from 2001 is 1.78 today. https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/2001?amount=1

You should try Linux because you want to and find it interesting to learn. If you are doing it because other people told you to, you are going to have a bad time.

Linux isn't Windows with different branding. Things work differently, and if you take the time to understand why you'll usually see the logic eventually, even if you may not to agree with it. I think folks are bristling a bit at your implication that things are hard on purpose somehow. Many experienced users find the terminal easier to use and more efficient; it shouldn't shock anyone (including you) that it's going to feel awkward when you don't understand it yet.

Howtos tend to use the terminal because it's likely to work the same for everyone regardless of what other choices they've made with desktop environment, etc.

You can do nearly everything with a GUI if you choose.

This has just led me down a rabbit hole of trying to figure out why this meme exists.

So far, I have failed.

I started using Plasma 5 a smidge before devs were saying it was ready for primetime. That was my conversion from Gnome (which I was very happy to leave by then) and it's been nothing but positive.

I will wait for the full release of Plasma 6, but I'm super excited for it. I still <3 Plasma 5.

Thank you KDE devs!

I just want to point out that Lin-Manuel Miranda has been advocating for peace between the hard and soft G clans for more than a decade.

I’m gonna stop you there, because I’ve been using the format for about 30 years, and people only started using the new pronunciation in the last 10-15.

I've been using the word since the mid 90s and it's always been hard G for me.

I don't say that to suggest that you or anyone else are wrong to say it with a soft G (although my brain cringes each time I hear it), but since I don't think I invented the hard G pronunciation I think claiming it's a recent thing is a fallacious argument against the hard G.

would it be illegal to download Ubuntu on a Chromebook?

what if I, for example, had a job in Google and I liked Linux so much I install Ubuntu on my Chromebook, would that be illegal/send me to prison?? Or, if I had the job, would I be kicked?? I like Chromebooks because they are so smol and nice. But I don’t know if it’s legal to install a Linux distro on it. Thank you!!

I don't think anyone is going to come smash down your door because you installed Ubuntu. But I don't know what country you are in and two years ago I wouldn't have believed Iranian police would kill people over wearing a hijab. So I think you should do it, but I also think you should stay safe.

Wayland does not work properly on Intel hardware: Again, I’m using AMD, so I can’t confirm or deny this, but considering the Intel drivers are open source, and I’ve heard about many, many improvements made on the Intel side of things, I think it would be reasonable to assume it has been fixed.

Posting this from Plasma Wayland on Intel right now. If something is broken, it's something not apparent to me.

2025 might finally be the year of linux

The year of the Linux desktop is right now, if you want it to be. For me it was 2007 - and watching the evolution of Windows since then has been a continuous validation of my choice.

If you want to use Linux, use it! It's ready, and IMO has been for some time.

(And just to be clear - choosing otherwise is OK too! I don't intend my enthusiasm as zealotry. Folks making an educated decision to stay is totally valid.)

IIRC Compiz was a fork of Beryl or the other way around. I could be wrong though.

Last I checked you can still do the cube in kwin under plasma.

Greg K-H is the presumed successor and there's no reason to think he wouldn't do the same.

How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

Unless you have very specialized requirements (and quite possibly you do) the solution is usually to unhook yourself from thinking of needing specific programs and to instead focus on needing to perform specific tasks. (Then finding the Linux way to perform that task.)

Barring that, the codeweavers suggestion is a good one. I used it in my early days when I thought I couldn't live without particular pieces of Windows software and although that was several years ago, even then it was pretty good about being able to easily run arbitrary Windows software. IMO it's cheap enough to be worth the investment.

If you truly have bespoke requirements that just can't be satisfied by either of the above, staying on Windows may legitimately be your best option.

More generally - if you decide to take this step, expect to have to learn to use a computer substantially differently than you have in the past. It's not harder; in many ways it's easier. But if you are very experienced and comfortable with Windows, a lot of concepts are going to feel foreign to you. Tackle one task at a time and your experiences will build upon each other. Go into it expecting to have to learn, and you'll do fine. Bizarrely I find the least tech-savvy folks sometimes have the easiest time transitioning.

Yep that would be just the picture to post about an information freedom activist driven to death by the US justice system. that's why it says "Aaron Swartz day" in OP, because it's a pic of Rishi Sunak.

Welcome aboard!

I can’t believe I suffered with Windows for as long as I have.

Just the fact that articles like this need to exist (and are plentiful), as one very tame example, makes me wonder what kind of stockholm syndrome has grabbed anyone with a shred of technical understanding who is still using Windows. They actively work to prevent allowing you full control of the OS running on your own hardware, and to make it difficult (or require additional payment) to turn off privacy invading telemetry and advertisement. Ignoring all other complaints that could be made about Windows, how is this not a dealbreaker for way more people than it seems to be?

Ways to pirate music as convenient as Spotify?

The reason I gave up on MP3’s and subscribed to Spotify was because Spotify was easy. I’ve been listening “Iron Maiden - Empire of the Clouds” song every day and like a week ago, its removed. This was the last straw for me. Right now I’m trying to find “Stremio” of the music world. Can someone assist?...

I was an early adopter of Jellyfin and love it - but personally prefer Navidrome for my music server. Granted, I haven't looked at the music capabilities of Jellyfin in a long while, because I've been running Navidrome.

Symphonium android client is my recommendation for that (and I believe it also works for Jellyfin) but there are others.

My pipeline is essentially as you describe though Lidarr --> nzbget --> Navidrome

Reagan wrote the second amendment?

On the off chance this question was asked in earnest:

The typical deflection from the US right is that the real problem is that we need to put more effort into addressing mental health. (and IMO there is some truth to that)

However, Reagan (R) dismantled funding for our mental health infrastructure and was responsible for the closing of many mental health treatment centers, and Republicans since then have (to my knowledge) voted against every effort to resurrect it.

They won't support restrictions on gun ownership because they say the problem is mental health, but they won't support spending on mental health either. (Most likely because they seem to oppose anything that would actually help people who suffer.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_Health_Systems_Act_of_1980

https://sociology.org/content/vol003.004/thomas.html

This last one is a ddg search - you can just pick which article you want to read about Republicans voting against mental health funding.

Clone Wars did a great job portraying Anakin's gradual slide. There was nuance and plenty of exposure of the good parts of his character. His friendship with Obi-Wan was in evidence. His relationship with Padme was believable.

The fact that post-pubescent prequel-Anakin was ever trusted by anyone is at best evidence of how the dark side clouds perception.

In the prequels, from EPII he continuously felt like someone who should clearly be a Sith being shoehorned into being a Jedi. His friendship with Obi-Wan existed in name only, and his "romance" with Padme was in fact not a better romance than Twilight. (And that's saying something.)

OG fans waited decades to see Vader's backstory, and what we got was about the least rewarding most hamfisted and uninteresting portrayal of that backstory that could have been achieved. Decades of fan appetite regarding that backstory, possibly the only time such a thing has been maintained in the history of cinema, or likely will be again, and Lucas gave us Jar-Jar, cringe dialog, limp acting, and endless CGI.

D&D royally fucked up with GoT, but using the prequels to shine a light on that reads like something from The Onion.
