conciselyverbose, to linux in need help fixing a hardware problem using linux

It does feel like a pretty long shot, but you've done all the common sense stuff and are into the weeds, so why not throw wild guesses around?

conciselyverbose, to linux in need help fixing a hardware problem using linux

What if the battery is doing something hinky enough to cause very minor interference and the internal cable is close enough to be affected by it? I'm not super familiar with the low level details of battery tech but I think it could theoretically be possible (though obviously would be stupid rare).

conciselyverbose, to linux in linux phone with external camera?

Excluding some of the smaller point and shoots, which are still more volume than most phones, DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras are way bigger than phones for a reason. It's because that's what it takes to take actual high quality pictures without cheating heavily with processing.

conciselyverbose, to linux in linux phone with external camera?

I really doubt that. Computational photography is only as good as it is because of how heavily it processes all sorts of data that can't make it into the jpeg that gets spit out.

I would love to see what an Apple camera with the hardware they leverage on iPhone, but a full frame sensor and real lens could do, because what they manage to pull out of the trash ass input is impressive. But it's already processed to absolute hell. There's nothing left for further passes to pull out.

conciselyverbose, to piracy in GTA V source code has been leaked.

If it's malicious, it's not penetration testing. It's just malicious.

conciselyverbose, (edited ) to piracy in Amazon's Prime Video will start serving ads on January 29 unless you pay extra

As far as I'm concerned skippable ads are the same thing as any other ad. I use auto play for a reason and it's because I don't want to fuck with the remote every episode.

conciselyverbose, to linux in KDE's Nate Graham On X11 Being A Bad Platform & The Wayland Future

It's not intended as a drop in replacement.

Backwards compatibility forever sounds great, but the technical debt eventually becomes a giant fucking limitation on improvement. They chose not to stay backwards compatible for a reason.

conciselyverbose, to asklemmy in What is the goofiest Christmas present you received this year?

I got an axe throwing game (plastic axes, so reasonably safe, but surprisingly fun). I would rather the axes weigh a little more, but as is it means it can be put out with other lawn games when families come over without being nervous about kids.

conciselyverbose, to asklemmy in What’s your go to driving song?

I listen to a constant stream of audiobooks when I drive (and the rest of the time).

conciselyverbose, to asklemmy in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

I just don't consider any of that an answer to the question. For the most part, nobody is expecting every individual ingredient of a meal to be made from the raw ingredients (I don't actually think sauce is a lot of hands on work, but I don't usually bother to make it either). While I have a pasta maker and love fresh homemade pasta, if I make a lasagna from store bought noodles, jarred sauce, and store bought ricotta, nobody is going to yell at me for calling it homemade. The version with fresh pasta, homemade sauce, and homemade ricotta is going to be better (OK, I haven't done ricotta so I might make it gross), but the first one still counts.

conciselyverbose, to asklemmy in What are your best air fryer/oven recipes?

It does a way better job at most frozen food and leftovers than a microwave does, but takes longer.

Almost anything you'd deep fry can be lightly spritzed with oil and done in an air fryer instead.

If it's big enough for a pizza, you can make one from scratch instead of frozen. It's cheaper than anything but the cheapest frozen crap and a lot better.

conciselyverbose, to linux in Techrights — The Effort to Silence (Squash) GNU/Linux Advocates and Press Coverage

This is a mess and a half.

conciselyverbose, (edited ) to asklemmy in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

There's a huge difference between not butchering your own chickens and buying some fucking nasty frozen crepes full of preservatives and random filler trash.

If it's premade at a grocery store, it's disgusting and way less healthy on top.

conciselyverbose, to asklemmy in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

Yeah, I'd rather be deaf.

One subject I could manage (psychology/AI if it has to be nonfiction or mysteries if fiction counts), but not one voice.

conciselyverbose, to linux in SSH protects the world’s most sensitive networks. It just got a lot weaker

I get your point that the exploit existed before it was identified, but an unmitigated exploit that people are aware of is worse than an unmitigated exploit people aren't aware of. Security through obscurity isn't security, of course, but exploiting a vulnerability is easier than finding, then exploiting a vulnerability. There is a reason that notifying the company before publicizing an exploit is the standard for security researchers.

You're right that it's never an OK title, because fuck clickbait, but until it's patched and said patch propagates into the real world, more people being aware of the hole does increase the risk (though it doesn't sound like it's actually a huge show stopper, either).
