All Ferengi coms really should be an ad-encrusted nightmare: trailer before session, banners and popups during, ad breaks, and then a trailer at the end. Oh and a prompt, either manual or automated, to dismiss all ads for a subscription fee or an expensive one-time fee.

But with that recent paywall joke in LD, maybe that’s on the way?

Reminds me of the paper printouts in the very earliest TOS episodes. Like, what do you do when you run out of paper in deep space? And do you really have the storage for 5 years worth of computer printouts? Logistically, even an etch-a-sketch makes more sense.

That sounds amazing. Honest question: how much more screen would it take before a full VR setup would seem more practical? Not everyone has a battlestation like this, and I’m genuinely curious where the line is. Thank you.

Production reason: without a stylus it looks like he’s reading, not writing. Without one, dialogue like “I’m writing a book” would come across as lying, which can completely change a scene for the worse.

In-universe lore reason: Jake is a romantic and probably feels that the more tactile approach is better for his creative process.

Red Dwarf is good, but I find it leans on the laugh-track a little too hard sometimes. It does a good job of poking fun at sci-fi of the day, and is a great counter-point to BBC sci-fi like Trek and Dr. Who. They may have even shared some of the same sets and props with the latter.

Hyperdrive is in the same vein and has some really great moments. It sits in my head as the midway point between Red Dwarf and The Office. You could even say it was the much lower-budget BBC predecessor to The Orville.

They make a nod to this on Lower Decks. The higher ranking officers have access to an entirely different replicator menu, suggesting a distinction in quality overall.

I would love to see what the fan edit looks like. I (re)watched it just last week and the theatrical cut is… a mess, to put it gently. There’s almost too much going on, with not enough focus on the elements that make the story tick. But there’s lots to work with here that would make a very high-production-value 50 minute Trek episode.

Scotty and Uhura’s flirting was cute, but it doesn’t go anywhere so it’s dead weight film-wise. But without it, the characters have even less to say in an already crowded story. It’s just sad.

One moment that stuck out to me was the bar fight. Kirk just tosses a Catian stripper, over his head, into a literal “pool” table and she’s rendered dead/unconscious floating face down in the water. Either she has bones like a baby bird or Kirk is on 'roids. I can’t make sense of that edit unless there was a longer fight that got chopped down somehow. It makes zero sense.

Except for Star Trek IV and at least half of Star Trek V.

I like this take. Use him like you’d use a stunt coordinator, or a pyrotechnics specialist. Have a complex action scene that needs to convey action, chaos, high-stakes, and fireballs, for 12 straight minutes? He’s your guy.

On the one hand: no matter what you replicate it’s ethical, nutritious, and good for you. There are literally no bad choices for your body.

On the other: you have access to a bottomless culinary database that spans innumerable diets, cultures, broad swaths of history… and you order Chef Boyardee’s finest with a few saltines. I think it’s time to talk to the ship’s counselor, because nobody should be eating struggle meals in a post-scarcity society.

Yup. The movie basically set the tone that the galaxy was ruled by decadents that were kind of unaware and feckless when it came to novel challenges.

On top of that, SGC figured out that sending scouting parties of 3-4 people was insanely effective at shifting the balance of power across the whole flippin’ galaxy. And that was just with conventional ballistic weapons. It makes complete sense to arm counter-insurgents with what was already working, on a much bigger scale. It gives Earth and your exploratory efforts a lot of breathing room on the cheap.

The show extrapolates from there, but does the odd thing of having to make the Goa’uld super effective at interstellar warfare, to explain the conflict with the Asgard. But by that point, the SGC has looted enough tech to build a single ship, along with a huge chunk of Robotech’s storyline, to save everybody.
