that was Data’s whole point. Then, just as Picard was about to dish out a bunch of huffy, self-righteous moral indignation, their conversation got cut off by an incoming message or some other rather convenient interruption. Trek was often bold in how it approached controversial sociopolitical subjects. And, sometimes, it scampered off without honestly addressing them.

this occasion was one of the latter.

edit: although, one could argue that, due to the fact that Data got his comment in before Picard was able to give a self-righteous counter-argument, the writers, in fact, were quite brave. The comment was so controversial, in fact, the episode was banned in several markets which refused to air this episode, and it still remains banned in some places to this day.

From Memory-Alpha:

Due to political sensitivity, as Ireland was still in the midst of the Troubles when “The High Ground” aired in 1990, the reference to Irish unification and terrorism in the episode resulted in its removal from first-run in the United Kingdom. To date, some syndicating networks will not air the episode, and it was only in 2007 (fifteen years after its first run, nine years after the conflict ended in a peaceful manner) that it was broadcast on the BBC.

Congratulations. In almost 30 years, this is the first thing that finally made me want to throw my phone when I saw it.

gregorum,

Who wouldn’t want a genetically-engineered top?

gregorum,

It’s a jeep thing

you mentioned that. my questions was how would you know that?

I’m just an old fashioned, country mortician, Jim.

Why you eyein’ my lemon drink?

gregorum,

The Apple MessagePad did it on-the-fly, by the word. Problem was, it was terrible. It was supposed to learn your handwriting and get better over time, but it didn’t. The next to try was Palm, and they mostly got it with their special shorthand glyphs. I had both, and was much happier with my PalmPilots.

gregorum,

If that latinum that Morn puked up and gave to Quark was actually just a bit of Odo, and later disappeared, that would be so damn hilarious…

It’s in the realm of possibility, but it is extremely unlikely. Like, extremely, outrageously unlikely.

The real question here is: why? do you suspect this is happening? While I cannot speak to your circumstance, it’s much more likely there is some other more rational explanation for what is going on.

gregorum,

I also miss professionals exploring space, solving problems with science and diplomacy, engaged in intriguing stories that explored the complex moral and ethical issues of the day instead of just blowing shit up all the time and with some superficial lip-service pandering to certain social issues just to appease fans but without much more lasting presence than mere tokenism and self back-patting for the effort.

This was, like, 6 years later. Also shown in TV low-res 480p instead of big-screen film resolution. Or 1080p— I don’t know if TPB got the 4K treatment.

[troubles deepened, dost declared!]

gregorum,

Well, I say, Madame Guinean, the visage of these verdant ghouls does trouble me deeply!

gregorum,

Uh, Lemmy isn’t really big on memes (except over at c/Risa on startrek.website — their Star Trek meme game is on point!), so the old memes are partly satire for those of us that are older than memes and mostly make fun of them. With old memes. It’s complicated.
