Don’t worry, the joke is that the graph doesn’t have anything to do with popularity, it compares the OSes’ respective current versioning numbers 😉

It’s flattering that you think anybody knows what all of those acronyms actually stand for. I’m semi-certain of NASA, the rest could just be made up for all I know (as a non-native English speaker).

So SBCs are shit now?

Nothing changed, the hardware is the same as before. Your little pi servers are still doing the exact same work they did before. The only variables are prices on SBCs vs used small factor x86s, and the short, short attention span of terminally online hobbyists.

Use whatever you like, no need to race after others’ subjective (and often hyperbolic) judgment.

Self-hosted or personal email solutions?

I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I’m hoping to create a unique and “professional” looking email account like johndoe@gmail.com or john@doe.com. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for...

“Self” … “Dost”?

Idk, that looks strikingly like a no-brand Freedom box, except there are no specs to judge by. Just some super iffy, nondescript sales pitch. “That’s it, yes indeed”!

I mean, neither of you is wrong. On user privacy, Apple is probably the least worst of the big providers. At the same time their business model is to lock in users to their platform and hardware. “Once you’ve gone Mac you’re not going back” is the result of a deliberate design choice on Apple’s part.

Sounds to me like OP is aiming to bypass the entire corporate cloud service mess by going self-sufficient via FLOSS?

So Hollywood copyright lawyers will target illegal subscription services rather than individual downloaders? Fine by me.

I can understand paying for a legal streaming service where at least a tiny percentage of profits goes into producing new material. I pirate out of convenience and availability, because movies and series aren’t released immediately in my region.

Paying somebody for streaming film and TV shows that they have no hand in producing, and thus not supporting new productions — same as I can download for free myself? — that makes no sense to me.

And like I said, I get convenience/availability. I guess paying for stolen goods is one step too far for me. Like, “Dude, pass it around, but it’s not yours to sell”.

Alright boys, I've been converted to the light side and have installed F-Droid. Now what?

Basically title. I waited on installing F droid for a long time because my phone threw many scary warnings when I tried a long time ago. But now I have it, and I got some fossify apps, but since there is no “Editor’s Picks” on F- droid I dont really know where to go from here....

I see! I missed that nuance since the announcement that K-9 would become TB Android. Thanks for the update.

I’m partial to the old K-9 logo too, but I love that the two email projects I use are working together for interoperability 🙂

Mozilla are currently working on a mobile version of Thunderbird for Android, built on top of K9 mail.

Is that what it is, or is K-9 becoming Thunderbird for Android? My understanding from official announcements was the latter.

Yeah, you can enable those repos in plain f-droid, too.

What is the draw of droidify other than (I think) using material design?

No worries, I was genuinely uncertain what the current status is. Appreciate the answers!

Also: generosity, altruism, compassion, kindness, curiosity, exploration, principle, idealism, etc, etc.

IMHO, money is something that exists in the world and that I need to live. It’s a necessary evil, not a universal human driving force. And believe me, I’m neither rich or even financially afloat.

halm,
@halm@leminal.space avatar

The only thing that drives people is money.

Hundreds of thousand of unpaid open source contributors would have a word about that. In fact, millions of voluntary workers in other fields, too.

You’re right that companies contribute to open source as well, and that their motivations are probably self serving. Your conclusion doesn’t hold water, though.

I’ve found that for me markdown is the very simplest, yet versatile way of typing out stuff quickly and regularly. And it’s not bound to any one software or platform, so I use Markor on my phone and Geany on my laptop.

At least it used to be spelled with a k instead of c, so it looked like the name of an old Eastern bloc brand of tractor or something.

I remember when I could install Friendika (yes, that long ago) on a low spec web host. Probably 15 years ago, and it didn’t last.

Like you say, it ought to be the easily self hosted alternative to Facebook. The one you could suggest to your non-techie relative as a Fediverse gateway. Yet after a couple decades of development, it’s still esoteric and awkward.

If you want a little bit of hand holding to ease you into Arch, Endeavour OS is a pretty smooth distro that makes the install and configuration easier.

is there a foss project to automatically sort files

do you know that minecraft mod that autosorts your inventory? is there are project that can autosort a messy file system and put all of your files of a similar nature into a well organised, well named order. obviously this would require ai that could do image, language, and audio recognition but is there anything in the works? i...

@halm@leminal.space avatar

This requires no “AI”, just some simple rule-based automation, at most some algorithmic sorting.

  • Android (or some custom branded Android versions?) automatically save downloaded files in folders by Pictures, Documents, etc unless you tell them.not to.
  • Office365 offers the PowerAutomate function, but knowing Microsoft they probably overcomplicated things a bunch. [Edit: obviously this isn’t FLOSS, just a hint at what to look for alternatives to…]

This approach never appealed to me as I want to know where things are rather than where some subroutine thinks it belongs, but I’m certain you will find plenty of software that offers an auto sorting feature.

…your 100+ Gb RAM machine chokes on a couple of server applications that others run on commodity hardware? That sounds like a non-*arr issue.
