Me vs my ISP

So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you....

henfredemars,

Ouch. You know some landlords get kickbacks for exclusivity? It’s pretty corrupt where I live.

henfredemars,

Those attributes are an important part of what I like about her! Very direct, very plain to a fault. She has never and probably will never have an interest in playing interpersonal games. Zero drama. Loyal, because she doesn’t like change. She’s obsessive in her interests meaning we both easily get sufficient time to be our own person.

Sure, she’s exceptionally sensitive about certain textures and sounds, but I understand because I’m the same way. Meeting her was like living a life where everyone speaks this language that I just wasn’t born with, and finding someone else who is just as confused as I am was really validating.

So yes, I suggested that we marry, and she says yes you will suffice… which is perhaps the highest compliment she has ever paid me.

henfredemars,

Haha, well, I told my family that a person has to get to know her. She seems bitter at first but that’s just how she is. Besides, they don’t have to live with her. I do.

Not using her outward appearance, countenance, or facial expressions as indicative of her true feelings is part of the package. It takes getting used to, and it’s not right for everyone.

“Sufficient” is her elation.

We did–After we agreed to get married, because we were quite sure, but at the same time we didn’t want to impose such a stark change right away in case the change would exceed one’s ability to cope with change which could lead to panic, meltdowns, etc. Neither of us handle change very well. We didn’t actually get married immediately of course. She packed up a pod and moved in next. It was months before.

We also talked about having kids right away. Not having them right away! But we talked about it immediately, I think like five minutes in, because isn’t it important to know?

As a counterpoint: nothing in life is without risk. I’ve seen friends take it slow and end up divorced, too.

henfredemars,

No kidding. My employer has top quality health insurance too, and in the USA that’s a seriously big deal when your prospective partner has a health condition.

henfredemars,

My wife wanted amethyst because “everyone gets a diamond ring. And it’s purple!” It was also very cost effective.

henfredemars,

Upon the web, a cipher dance delayed, An SSL error in its code displayed. In cryptic realms, where data ought to flow, A falter in the handshake, whispers woe.

From one program to another I suppose.

henfredemars,

I think it comes down to the culture. A minuscule improvement to a file system is big news in the Linux community. There’s also lots of academic interest in the performance critical parts of the kernel that you just can’t emulate with a closed source model. Is anyone writing papers on how to obtain a 2% improvement in the task scheduler on Windows?

Linux dominates the server market, so even small improvements matter when you’re talking about a server farm with thousands of machines or the latest supercomputer. Many, many people care about the scalability of Linux. On Windows, we say: NTFS? It’s good enough. The user won’t notice on modern SSDs.

henfredemars,

I wonder if this is true for others but I’m just not close to my family. I think most people have smaller social circles today than they did 10 years ago.

Without close family, there’s a lot less to Christmas.

henfredemars,

And as far as my wife is concerned, I’m definitely 6 ft tall. Height ain’t what it used to be.

henfredemars,

Maybe it’s in the over-provisioned storage space!

Yes, I know it’s because of the units conversion, but there could actually be 2 TB of NAND even though it’s not accessible to you.

henfredemars,

I think the implication is that the customer is drinking alcohol frequently lately because the lady ordered in the way you would order many alcoholic beverages with ice.

henfredemars,

I like the angle of “believing” because it’s fun but never really thinking he’s a real physical being.

henfredemars,

Sir excuse me but I seem to have misplaced my blood.

henfredemars,

There’s a whole protocol for talking to supported devices so they can negotiate power delivery.

henfredemars,

It seems that I see fewer lights every year since I was a child.

henfredemars,

I always start off being nice until some leader insults me for no reason.

More blood for the blood god 🤷‍♂️

henfredemars,

I met the author… a guy who wrote the script for one of the pictured movies. He was doing stand-up comedy on a cruise ship. He said yes, they are all terrible, but there’s a certain audience for them and they’re quite profitable.

He said I want you to think of me when you’re forced to watch one of these. I want you to know who is responsible, and that I’m very sorry.

Here’s the reference:

I’m curious. Where are you from? I didn’t know the children’s rhyme was uncommon.

henfredemars, (edited )

Right. Of course I understand that.

I asked where people who don’t understand the reference come from. That was my question, so I can understand better what places haven’t heard the rhyme before.

I didn’t know that this one specifically was centered on the United States and Canada before looking it up.

henfredemars,

I’m an elder millennial but you guys are in the same boat. No idea how we’re going to afford housing down the line.

henfredemars,

Appreciate the down-to-earth response. Might have to head this direction sooner or later, except maybe with a tiny plot of land and an improved shed if it comes down to it. I’ll take something that works over homeless.

henfredemars,

These regulations weren’t even intended for passenger vehicles. It was supposed to constrain actual work trucks.

henfredemars,

My smartphone is specifically and uniquely useful to me for the following:

  • Access the Internet without using my work laptop. My employer doesn’t need to know I took a moment to check the weather, answer my wife to coordinate schedules, or respond to an important personal email.
  • Entertainment while my dog sniffs the same spot on the ground for 5 minutes, or while standing in a queue.
  • Safety, if I need to reach someone while out and about. I can’t imagine pulling out a laptop on the side of the road and trying to call a tow.
  • More secure OS for accessing mobile banking.
  • I love taking pictures. The best laptop cameras struggle to compete with a mid-range smartphone.

With that said, I think the smartphone is something that you know is useful to you. For most people, the answer is clearly yes that it has a place. It’s refreshing to know that not everyone is so dependent.
