howrar,

Parenting is a 24/7 job. You need to take your breaks while on the clock be everyone you’re never off the clock. Paying someone for childcare services is a job with a start and end time. You can take your breaks before or after. The expectations are different because the jobs are different.

howrar,

I’m living through this right now. I don’t need anyone else to tell me anything. My partner and I alternate on childcare while the other person handles other household duties and day job duties. Our parents come by regularly to help out and we use that time to catch up on sleep as best as we can. Paying for childcare doesn’t make sense as it just negates most of one person’s income. If I’m going to be working anyway and not resting, I’d much rather put that energy towards my kid and have less money than be away but have sightly more money.

howrar,

Canadian here and I’ve never seen a Canadian Tire branded tool in my life. Are you maybe talking about Mastercraft?

howrar,

I just checked and they’re all 7-8min long. The videos in that YouTube playlist are 2-4min long.

howrar,

I think this should be fairly easy to test yourself. Just disconnect from the WAN, say the wake word, and see if the device responds.

howrar,

Couldn’t you just leave the country and disappear somewhere with a low cost of living? Not like anyone can catch you moving crypto across borders.

Where to turn to if I need books that are paywalled behind overly expensive academic portals?

I need some books paywalled behind Oxford Politics Trove and they aren’t on Anna’s lib, Zlib, Libgen, Memory of the World, Aaarg, or the Internet Archive. Not sure to whom else to turn to. I hate that knowledge like this is paywalled, and I highly doubt the authors will be paid if I pay the highway robbery of a price.

howrar,

What makes you think it’s a myth?

howrar,

People are busy, and academics especially get tons of emails to wade through. When we say that authors will gladly share their papers, it means that the incentives are aligned such that it benefits them to share their work for free. It doesn’t mean that they’ll drop everything else to respond to your email.

howrar,

Unfortunately, windows likes to wake your computer from sleep to update and reboot without your permission. All unsaved work be damned.

howrar,

What’s the problem with GRUB and will it impact someone who sees the boot menu maybe three times a year at most?

howrar,

Ah, gotcha. You weren’t the only one to say this, so I thought there might be something more to it.

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

howrar,

Can confirm. I upload YouTube videos and it shows me stats on which parts of the video people watch.

howrar,

Used to store them on Google Keep, but things were getting too messy there. I’ve been gradually moving things over to Notion. So far, it’s working a lot better in some respects (better organization with their tables and formatting options), but also worse in others (Notion app and website is way heavier than Keep). Would love to hear about better options, especially since I don’t trust them to stay alive for as long I want all this data to stay alive.

howrar,

If I didn’t want for money in my daily life

Big if. We unfortunately don’t live in a world where you can stay alive for long if you dedicated your time to the arts without getting paid. But in an ideal world where that wasn’t the case? I would agree with you there.

howrar,

Ridiculously expensive housing without the salaries to match. But at least I don’t have to worry about going broke if ever someone in the family gets sick I guess.

howrar, (edited )

tldr: Always flip the switch

Edited with some of TauZero’s suggested changes.

  • Let N be the size of the population that the villain abducts from
  • Let X be the event that you are abducted
  • Let R be the outcome of the villain’s roll
  • Let C be the event that you have control of the real switch

  • If 1-5 is rolled, then the probability that you are abducted is P(X|R∈{1,2,3,4,5}) = 1/N
  • If 6 is rolled, then P(X|R=6) = (N-1 choose 9)/(N choose 10) = ((N-1)!/(9! * (N-10)!)) / (N!/(10! * (N-10)!)) = 10/N
  • The probability of getting abducted at all is P(X) = P(X|R∈{1,2,3,4,5})P(R∈{1,2,3,4,5}) + P(X|R=6)P(R=6) = (1/N)(5/6) + (10/N)(1/6)
  • The probability that a six was rolled given that you were abducted: P(R=6|X) = P(X|R=6)P(R=6)/P(X) = (10/N)(1/6)/((1/N)(5/6) + (10/N)*(1/6)) = 2/3

So as it turns out, the total population is irrelevant. If you get abducted, the probability that the villain rolled a 6 is 2/3, and the probability of rolling anything else is its complement, so 1/3.

Let’s say you want to maximize your chances of survival. We’ll only consider the scenario where you have control of the tracks.

  • P(C|R∈{1,2,3,4,5}) = 1/10
  • P(C|R=6) = 1
  • P(C) = P(C|R∈{1,2,3,4,5})P(R∈{1,2,3,4,5}) + P(C|R=6)P(R=6) = (1/10)(5/6) + (1)(1/6) = 1/4
  • P(R=6|C) = P(C|R=6)P(R=6)/P(C) = (1)(1/6)/(1/4) = 2/3
  • P(R∈{1,2,3,4,5}|C) = P(C|R∈{1,2,3,4,5})P(R∈{1,2,3,4,5})/P(C) = (1/10)(5/6)/(1/4) = 1/3
  • If you flip the switch, you have a 1/3 chance of dying.
  • If you don’t flip it, you have a 2/3 chance of dying.

If you want to maximize your own probability of survival, you flip the switch.

As for expected number of deaths, assuming you have control of the tracks:

  • If you flip the switch, the expected number of deaths is (1/3)*1+(2/3)*0 = 0.33.
  • If you don’t flip it, the expected number of deaths is (1/3)*0+(2/3)*10=6.67.

So to minimize the expected number of casualties, you still want to flip the switch.

No matter what your goal is, given the information you have, flipping the switch is always the better choice.

howrar,

There is also a chance that your switch is not connected and someone else has control of the real one. So there is an implicit assumption that everyone else is equally logical as you and equally selfish/altruistic as you, such that whatever logic you use to arrive at a decision, they must have arrived at the same decision.

Ah, yes. I forgot to account for that in my calculations. I’ll maybe rework it when I find time tomorrow.

What VPN do you use and why?

If you are a pirate VPN is an essential tool. I am trying to ascertain the popularity of various VPNs in piracy community. In this excerise, I will list several Popular VPNs in the comment if you use one of them just upvote that comment and reply the reason. If you don’t find your VPN listed add a comment with just their name....

howrar,

I have torrents that have never completed due to lack of seeds and peers.

That’s what failing means here. You know how you sometimes see a torrent site list a non-zero number of seeders but when you try to download it, you don’t connect to any of them and it shows 0 seeders in your client? That’s what happens when neither you nor the seeders have port forwarding set up.

howrar,

Please tell me where I can be paid for publishing papers.

howrar,

Another upside to this is that it ensures you stay focused and don’t wander off and forget that you were cooking when there’s downtime. That’s assuming this is a problem you’re prone to.

howrar,

Agree with merging. We could use tags in post titles (e.g. [Recipe], [BBQ], [Ask], etc) so we can easily pick out those that interest us, and also allow us to see if a particular subtopic is gaining more popularity.

howrar,

I don’t understand what you’re trying to say with the yield. The rice didn’t go anywhere. The nutritional value of that pot of rice is the same regardless of how you cook it. Different methods just produce rice that absorb different amounts of water, so the weight is different.

howrar,

What pressure cooker do you use? I just tried today with an Instantpot and the bottom completely solidified after a few hours with the rest of the rice turned into mush. This is with the keep warm setting.

howrar,

Ah, okay. When I said “throughout the day”, I actually mean throughout the day. As in making a large pot of rice in the morning and eating from that same pot for breakfast lunch and dinner. One of the main appeals of rice cookers is the ability to do that. It may not be recommended by food safety guidelines, but it’s standard practice in any household that consumes a lot of rice and it’s never been a problem.
