Ok

Japanese comfort food frequently calls for either ketchup or Japanese mayo in/on rice. Omurice being a prime example.

Lmao, I wish but no, no hallmark movie plots here. This was a few years ago, and we now have said cat :) He definitely forgot immediately after I mentioned it until I showed up with a cat one day lol

Doesn’t really explain why I was receiving cat litter ads after only speaking with my husband offhand about maybe getting a cat. We didn’t already have a cat, so hadn’t had any reason to look up any cat care goods ever, and I had never searched for anything even remotely cat-related up to that point. But wouldn’t you know it, about 45 minutes later, I was getting kitty litter ads. Very spooky.

Trust me, there are plenty of songs as bad or worse. I get the same reaction to several Daft Punk songs. Mariah Carey isn’t especially bad, no matter what the internet says. There are some especially brain dead christmas remixes stores play during the holidays that make my skin crawl.

That’s not quite right. They hired a theoretical physicist to provide them equations for simulating a black hole. Then, the SFX studio used their Nolan Movie Money to generate it extremely accurately to the extent that it helped spawn further research. It’s not that the studio happened to get it right from research. They were given all the pieces they needed and were able to do something these physicists had a hard time doing likely because they never had that kind of money/equipment: make an exceptional, high-fidelity, cinematic simulation.

Really? I found it to be extremely mid. It took at least an hour for the film to not feel like a trailer montage and find proper pacing. The writing didn’t feel organic at all, and felt like actors reading historical quotes from a page at each other. Also, when Florence Pugh’s character started riding Oppenheimer’s dick while he said his famous Bhagavad Gita line, I burst out laughing in the theater and had a really hard time taking the rest of the movie seriously.

I think this movie will be forgotten in 3 years, if not sooner.

iheartneopets, to asklemmy in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Lmao, no it isn’t. At best, it’s made for people who are lightly into space/science and also lightly into cinema, so please don’t trot out the “you need a high IQ to enjoy this movie” stuff. If it were made for space nerds, two scientists selected for deep space flight wouldn’t need to stop and explain what E=MC² is to one another.

That’s kind of always been Nolan’s schtick, though, and I guess it’s working out for him because he’s got the a huge, quite passionate fan base. I’ll never understand the hype and find his movies quite mid as cinema, but eh.

Oppenheimer at number 2?? In what world? It was decent, but does not deserve to be listed over so many others. Sometimes the Nolan hype train confounds me.

Awesome, thank you for the recommendations and the heads up! I’ll definitely have to try some. Lately all my socks have been springing holes, so I’m excited to try some more durable ones

iheartneopets, to asklemmy in What gifts are you getting for your friends and family members?

Omg I would love a gift like that! What is this mythical brand of socks?

iheartneopets, to asklemmy in What gifts are you getting for your friends and family members?

Just a heads up, books are a very personal gift to give. I’ve never had it work out. Not saying you don’t know your family, but it’s hard to guess exactly what types of books they like. Especially if the only goal is encouraging her to read, that book will prob end up not being touched or given away.

I’ve had family I know really well gift me many books over the years, since I was a kid who liked to read, and it was always something I would never be interested in.

Now a Barnes and Noble/Books a Million gift card? Those are always awesome! Even though I know it feels lame to give gift cards. That could encourage her to get into a bookstore to shop for exactly something that catches her interest, and maybe shows her a whole series or author she can come back for, even!

Anyways, I hope you and your family have a happy and smooth holiday!

iheartneopets, to lemmyshitpost in subs > dubs

Honestly I think some of the older dubs are the best (your cowboy bebops, your Gurren laganns, and even silly shows like Ouran High School Host Club had great casts), back when the industry still had passionate and skilled actors. Now it’s well known that anime voice acting pays for shit and all the talent has left for greener pastures—and I don’t blame them.

Now it feels to me like most dubs get stuck with VAs just at the start of their careers and it really shows… Most dubs make me cringe nowadays with the acting.

Plus, I feel like you get a more accurate translation with subs because they’re not trying to fit tweaked dialog into previously-animated mouth movements.

I used to really advocate for dubs and preferred them, but my stance has flipped quite a bit in recent years. Kinda sad to see them decline so much :(
