That’s the thing though, according to the explanation, it’s never 50/50.

If there are 3 doors, and 1 is opened, you have a 2/3rds chance in winning by picking the other door.

jordanlund, to asklemmy in Are there any people who were offended by Norm MacDonald's comedy? Was he controversial, or nah?
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I think the only person offended was that one NBC executive who was buddies with noted double murderer OJ Simpson.

I can explain it, it doesn’t mean I believe it. ;)

jordanlund, to archaeology in Many prehistoric handprints show a finger missing. What if this was not accidental?
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

OR - now bear with me here… OR one or more fingers were curled under when the tracing was made for reasons we can’t comprehend.

Maybe it was some ancient numbering system, or an attempt at a calendar. There’s really no way to know.

It LOOKS good, I’ll give you that. The salt planet with the red soil was inspired.

It’s too bad Rian Johnson didn’t get an average 5th grader to proof read the script.

For example:

Leia and Rey have this touching scene where Leia gives her this tracking gem that will let her come back to the fleet no matter where they go.

Then, in the VERY SAME SCENE, the New Order pops out of hyperspace and another character says, out loud, “they tracked us through hyperspace???!? THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!!!”

First - you literally just explained how yes, it was possible 2 sentences ago.

Second - Tracking devices have been a thing since the first Star Wars.

“TARKIN You’re sure the homing beacon is secure aboard their ship? I’m taking an awful risk, Vader. This had better work.”

Not controversial. You like what you like.

Now, if you had said something like “The Last Jedi is a good movie.” Well, that’s demonstrably untrue.

Stanley Kubrick never made an original film, they are all adaptations of other creators original works.

Temple of Apshai

You’ve never heard of it, and modern RPGs wouldn’t exist without it.

The Monty Hall problem.

You are given a choice of three doors, let’s call them 1, 2, and 3.

Behind one of the doors is a fabulous prize. Behind the other two are joke prizes worth nothing.

You are asked to pick a door. It doesn’t matter which one you choose, because it’s not opened inmediately.

Instead, the host opens one of the doors you did not pick to reveal the gag gift.

He then asks you if you want to change your choice.

What are the chances of winning? Should you choose a different door, or keep your existing choice?

The math says, your chance of winning if you stay with your choice is 1/3. Revealing the contents of one door does not change that, it’s still 1/3.

Switching to the other door gives you a 2/3 chance of winning. Not 1/2 or 1/3.

behavioralscientist.org/steven-pinker-rationality…

“If the car is behind Door 1, you lose. If the car is behind Door 2, Monty would have opened Door 3, so you would switch to Door 2 and win. If the car is behind Door 3, he would have opened Door 2, so you would switch to Door 3 and win. The odds of winning with the “Switch” strategy are two in three, double the odds of staying.”

jordanlund, to asklemmy in What is the most unusual spirit you have in your home bar?

Becherovka, it’s an herbal alcohol, kind of a cousin to Jägermeister.

Best described as “Christmas in a bottle.”

Little high for frying potatoes, I don’t see a modern setting for “pot”.

High end candy making is for light and dark caramel.

Maybe it means your thermometer is accidentally touching the bottom of the pot and isn’t accurate?

First 2/3rds of Wonder Woman was fine, but it fell apart at the end. WW 84 though, eesh. Bell to bell just trash, except Pedro Pascal who is a joy!

I did not, but in terms of the way they built out the animated universe was superlative.
