There’s a Habibi Imbiss near where i live ( Germany ). They have decorated the place with framed prints from personal photos taken all around the middle east, ranging from around 1950 to around 1970.
You can see the embrace of western culture around a time, where you had some of the best psychedelic rock coming from Iran, giallo movies playing in cinemas in Bagdad and beautiful architecture all around.
Each time i get my shawarma with halumi, i get to see a wonderfull glimpse from the past.
Ikr? It’s a daily joy to get one awesome post after the other. There were days, where i thought “ok, this is the peak, it can’t get better than this” only to be proven wrong the next day. Again and again.
2 days ago (see 2) I posted something into the !programmer_humor community which got almost 1000 upvotes (see 1) while the user numbers for the last week are at 131 (see 3), this doesn’t add up. How can 131 users upvote almost 1000 times?
The first time you walk towards this car, it’s like fucking ugly, hate this car. But when you enter the car it’s love. It has to smell decently like hubba bubba watermelon gum though, the old ones.
The magic ends, when you exit the car and close the door. Then it’s ugly again, disgusting even.
To THE computer, wherever that was. When i learned Basic in 1986/87, the only computers i had access to, were those we used in class.
Yeah, after class, homework consisted of writing code on paper. Copilot = Basic Book
Like, for what purpose you’d have a computer at home?
Iirc Basic was the first, non-scientist friendly programming language. I saw an ad in the newspapers and signed up. We were 6 students in total and the first people ( not working in any scientific field ) in our small town, which knew how to use a computer and write the code for the beloved starfield screen saver in Basic.
Edit: having watched war games 3 years prior, when i was 13, i really felt like a spy doing secret stuff.
I mean, it really only started to take off with eDonkey. napster was still very slow and so much malware disguised as mp3 files.
You didn’t even have to think about storage solutions. Even if i had my ISDN Connection bundled ( no phone line free for calls then ), the speed was max 128 Kbps.
Sorry, i suddenly remembered these details, from a long long time ago.
50% were laid off. This after Songtradr had commited to keep the Bandcamp experience the same.
The union was for nothing. Epic just sold, before any agreement wss made and again a few made a lot, while employees must endure whatever comes.
This fucking sucks big time.
The Internet as we knew it, is fading away and we just can hope that our privacy and an open internet are not only things we remember fondly, in a few years.
