NYC MTA sets Manhattan congestion price at $15 for most vehicles, just one MTA vote left before the first congestion pricing in North America (www.planetizen.com)

New York City’s congestion pricing program is moving forward with a $15 fee on passenger vehicles, reports Stephen Nessen in Gothamist, after the MTA board voted to approve it. The program now enters a 60-day public comment period before a final vote....

lemann,

Sounds good overall, should reduce traffic levels significantly and make people consider whether they really need to drive their car in such a compact city.

Not sure if I agree with tolling motorcycles though, they don’t take up anywhere near the same footprint as the average car

lemann,

Because it’s from china doesn’t mean anything though lol. So are our phones, clothes, bikes, car electronics, batteries, practically all electronics except hard drives etc.

Don’t forget that there are talented individuals everywhere, regardless of whatever perceptions exist about their country of origin.

In this case, OP wants access to what they consider to be a good show, and that’s that 🤷‍♂️🏴‍☠️

lemann,

The sense of entitlement in some of the replies on that post are absolutely awful

As for me personally, I want to love Wayland. It has great performance on ALL my devices, (except one with a nvidia GPU) and is super smooth compared to X11!

However… the secure aspect of Wayland makes it very difficult, if not impossible to easily get a remote desktop going. Wayvnc doesn’t support the most popular desktop environments depending on how Wayland was compiled, and the built-in desktop sharing on distros that have switched over to Wayland often require very specific Linux-only VNC and RDP clients, otherwise you run into odd errors.

I really hope the desktop sharing situation improves because it’s a pretty big showstopper for me. On X11 you just install & run x11vnc from a remote SSH session and you have immediate session access with VNC from Linux, Android, and Windows. If you want lockscreen access too then you run as root and provide the greeter’s Xauth credentials. But Wayland’s not so simple sadly AFAICT…

Waypipe is something I’ve found out about recently though, so need to check that out and see how well it works at the moment. If anyone has any helpful info or pointers please share, I’m completely new to Wayland and would appreciate it!

lemann,

IMO this is pretty shortsighted and going to affect all the wrong people, skimasks and balaclavas are a thing!

lemann,

And don’t call piracy stealing.

The companies should make it nice and easy for us to watch everything in one place, in high quality, from any device, for nice and cheap! …oh, that was Netflix a decade ago ☹️

Pretty difficult to convince the likes of minds on Lemmy to pay $100 for every streaming service in the world - to get a pretty awful experience, when you can get a much, much better experience without giving up your hard earned $$

I will fly my flag high for the free seas 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🚢

lemann,

I see a fair few comments about this quite frequently, and I completely agree - there’s a lot of video content that is better off as a written piece. Not everyone wants to sit through 10-15 mins of video that they could have skimmed or read in 2

What modes of transport do you really like?

For me personally, trams are right up there. Aside from the main issue of sharing the roads instead of having a dedicated line, they really make it easy to get from one part of a city to another, especially for wheelchair users. They’re usually as frequent as buses, but much faster. The stations are much more attractive...

lemann,

That registrar is operated by Freenom who is currently in court with Facebook.

If you try and register a domain there you’re taken to their correctly configured main site AFAIK, but the ability to register a domain has been locked since the court case

lemann,

2000: I bought myself a car!
2023: I bought an limited licen$e to drive a car!

lemann,

the entire conservative ideology undermines ideas like right-to-repair

Louis’s videos are posted to multiple platforms out of principle, not politics… that means they also get posted on sites with creators that have been kicked out of YouTube, like the one linked here

lemann,

That is why I pay for open subtitles

Lost me right here. Personally I’m not ever going to pay for a service where the work done by volunteer users, for free, is filling some random person’s pockets. An argument can’t even be made a la RedHat here - there’s literally no value being added to the volunteers’ work by OpenSubtitles…

OpenSubtitles literally has pulled a shXtter here IMO

lemann,

Fight with your wallet by…

  • 🏴‍☠️
  • An OSS/”source available" alternative
  • Buy alternative from another company that has a less restrictive licensing scheme, make sure you are happy with the definitions in the EULA

If you want to go the legal route, see what they define “lifetime license” as in the software EULA. I am not a legal expert, so ensure you get professional guidance should you choose this

If you still have the original computer kicking around, depending on how the software licensing works they may have a license file saved somewhere (maybe in appdata, or program files). Grab that and pop it in the same location on the new system and see if that works

lemann,

This kind of thing could work for a few apps, say a color picker utility or a QR code generator etc.

Looking at the docs, it isn’t clear if apps can write to their own namespace (instead of writing to user folders directly), but if they can, we could expand the scope to games like supertuxkart, 2048 etc, which would then be able to save user milestones and progress in their own area - a bit like how Android apps do it

docs.flatpak.org/en/…/sandbox-permissions.html

It’s a great start IMO, although admittedly there is still work to do. Flatpak atm bridges the gap with allowing new apps, requiring new libs, to run on older stable/LTS distros

I had no idea that you could download movies from the 90ies from archive.org (jeena.net)

I couldn’t find the Flintstones movie from 1994 anywhere but googling it I found it here archive.org/details/the-flintstones_202304 and you can either download it via torrent or directly. On top of it it says that the movie is CC0 which means Public Domain. But that can’t really be, it’s only 29 years old....

lemann,

It’s pretty easy to come across ©️🏴‍☠️, even roms and full games in some cases

lemann, (edited )

Sadly doesn’t work for gov level blocks that look at the SNI rather than blocking at DNS level

Edit: correction from ESNI to SNI

lemann,

Very, very, very brave you are to torrent on Hetzner lol

lemann,

However, I’m worried about what Rossmann says in regards to profit and maintenance. The app is moderated/worked-on by (I think paid) professionals and we should pay a license of $9.99 yet the app is also unprofitable and may never turn a profit. So, what’s the point in paying for the app?

By paying for the app, you’re merely donating to FUTO. As Rossmann mentioned in his video, it is completely optional to pay.

There’s nothing wrong with any app being unprofitable IMO. Public transport and car infrastructure is unprofitable and we don’t have a problem with those… heck even my personal website is unprofitable, that’s about $200-300 a year being funnelled into something nobody uses or visits.

Rossmann has a millionaire backing up his repair business

This is incorrect

Rossmann’s personal repair business is financially independent from his employer, FUTO, who only partially sponsors Rossmann’s R2R advocacy with the assistance of community donations. Rossmann frequently publishes hour long videos on his main channel crawling through the finances, and has spreadsheets online for public viewing where viewers can do an audit themselves

So, is some of this being funded by that person and other investors of FUTO or is our money the only thing keeping this afloat

AFAICT, FUTO is comparable to organisations like NLNET - the same people at sponsor the Lemmy devs. The aim is generally not to fund projects forever, but to eventually open source them after they’ve been developed to the agreed level of functionality. Seeing as this app is mainly a Rossmann initiative there could be an exception here though - such as Rossmann donating his own money towards development.

The app is niche and I can’t see too many people paying for a license

I’m probably an exception then lol

Spoilerhttps://images2.imgbox.com/9f/86/mJy91ESR_o.png

I also can’t see too many workers staying unless they are passionate. Something isn’t adding up unless I’m wrong.

A lot of people who follow Rossmann are passionate about R2R, actually owning what you pay for, and not giving excessive control to monopolies like Google.

Grayjay is more along the lines of this spirit, and as soon as they have their DHT video hosting thing ready I’ll gladly donate some of my storage space towards it 👌

lemann,

Grayjay can do this - there is a toggle in the settings for the YouTube addin to sync watch data with your Google account.

lemann,

3rd slide still living rent free in that dragon’s head to this day lol

lemann,

Freetube on desktop + newpipe/libretube on mobile is pretty much my combo. I very, very rarely visit youtube’s site directly anymore lol
