lemann,

A nice eye searing lime green that I used to use a bit when I first got into web development. Originally copied from goodness knows where lol.

Now I use it in my current job alongside the color red when designing CSS grids

NYC MTA sets Manhattan congestion price at $15 for most vehicles, just one MTA vote left before the first congestion pricing in North America (www.planetizen.com)

New York City’s congestion pricing program is moving forward with a $15 fee on passenger vehicles, reports Stephen Nessen in Gothamist, after the MTA board voted to approve it. The program now enters a 60-day public comment period before a final vote....

lemann,

fair point that I didn’t consider! my assumption would be traffic, seeing as the toll is branded as “congestion pricing” - which wouldn’t really make sense for motorcycles because they make up so little of the actual cause of traffic in NYC (large motor vehicles).

If we’re talking about noise though, and how clean the engine burns fuel, motorcycles are 100% guilty as charged IMO.

Deaths and injuries is a little muddier because there are several factors at play, fault could lie on any individual involved in the accident, or maybe even the road design itself. I don’t think these would be robust enough to use as the sole basis for a toll fee

lemann,

BTRFS has encryption now? Yay!! I have been wrapping it inside a LUKS partition for years at this point…

lemann,

Second this. Zorin OS, and Mandriva Linux (before they went bankrupt, and the community picked up development) were my first exposure to Linux over a decade ago, and the ux familiarity really helps a ton.

A lot of the other distros had funny stuff going on with multiple docks, open apps showing in the top dock, others looked like a Stardock Special and it was just a little confusing for younger me lol

lemann,

X.509 certs are commonly used in TLS/HTTPS.

Why is one needed in your boot process?

Don’t know why but I found this funny

lemann,

Probably a good idea to look for a different client, call me tinfoil but I wouldn’t want to touch a very old mechanism that is supported/pushed by a very recognisable 3 letter agency

lemann,

Somewhat related;

Recently saw a video where the presenter attended a press event, but ended up watching the thing from other attendees’ phones being held in the air, because the presenter wasn’t tall enough to see the stage 😢

I guess it could be a nice hack at concerts if you can’t see the stage properly

  • lemann,

Website should be called Adstaxi instead of Designtaxi if they’re going to pull that stunt

    lemann,

Very relaxing colour scheme, I like 👌

    lemann,

Florida man must have had a ton before encountering that racoon

    lemann,

I wonder how its packaged too, is winget firing off an MSI in the background with a silent flag?

    lemann,

Doomscrolling does not literally mean your feed is full of negative content lol, it’s just mindless scrolling

    lemann,

I don’t see why not - there are loads of other sites, let’s say DDL (roms etc) and various self-hosted blogs that chug along for years at the expense to the owner.

With Lemmy, the main concern would be growing storage, but that’s mostly solved by using something like B2 or Wasabi to store images, instead of the local server. B2 also recently changed their plans to make it free to download to a certain extent (prior to this, you had to pay for downloads) which makes this route even more viable.

I’m aware of lemmyworld and dbzer0 being very public about their donations, and lemmyml has been run by the devs years before we migrated. Lemmee’s admin is extremely active in the fediverse so that’s likely to stay too. We’ve only migrated from reddit in the past few months, so i’d say a lot of lessons have been learned in that time, as well as the viability/sustainability of running reasonably big instances.

A fair few have folded in that time too, some just disappearing out of the blue (vlemmy, lemmyuk, lemmyfilm) and others not able to manage the moderation as well as abusive users. I don’t think any have folded from it being too expensive to run - but I could of course be wrong there.

Personally, my blog site costs about $200/yr to run out of pocket, and is quite manageable at around $16/mo - comparable to a multiple-screen HD netflix subscription maybe. For a moderately used lemmy instance maybe you’d be paying $600/yr - about $50/mo which is still reasonably manageable. If just two users donated $50, your out-of-pocket costs drop to around $40. If all your users donated $2, assuming 100 users, your out of pocket drops to around $34.

The last time I checked, the largest instance Lemmyworld costs over $1k/mo to run (this also includes sister site mastodonworld, which is on separate infra but managed by the same core admin team IIRC). As of today there is a 4 month donation buffer, but looking at the graph on OpenCollective at least it looks like the admin team may need to cover a few hundred $ out of pocket if the buffer runs out, as monthly recurring donations is lower than the infra expenses. There are occasionally some very generous donors so I think it’s financially sustainable for the time being.

Overall I don’t think there’s anything to be worried about, this is the fediverse so you’re free to have an identity on any instance and still interact with the various communities. It’s not like Digg or Myspace where “when it’s gone, it’s gone”.

    lemann,

Mid 2012 is my daily 😍 running a different keyboard kernel module though to swap some of the keys, and make the Eject button a Delete key

I am pouring one out to this little champ. Stripping HDCP and letting me... archive streaming services from 2016-2023 RIP (lemmy.world)

What killed it, well after reviewing some PS4 gameplay I noticed that it was having audio issues, like it would allow some sounds but not all. It was almost as if it was receiving a 5.1 audio output but was missing the centre channel. Even though the PS4 was set to stereo....

    lemann,

Ouch! Thankfully haven’t run into this issue… either the display adapter I use has a HDCP stripper inside, or my Linux install isn’t enforcing HDCP on my macbook

    lemann,

Slippery slope IMO - also won’t do anything for criminals, they’ll just put on a mask or helmet.

The real fix is somewhere closer to more humans, not more tech

    lemann,

Are you using the latest version of both apps?

    lemann,

Crunchyroll used to (very blatantly) but I don’t think they do that anymore.

No idea of any other on-demand streamers using it unfortunately, however WWE, warner bros, FIFA, formula 1 and a bunch of sports organisations with their own subscription service use this tech in a transparent way to kill IPTV streams quickly

    lemann,

Particularly stuff outside of the human hearing range, if i’m not mistaken thats how Dolby Pro Logic & PLII surround worked

    lemann,

For me personally, nothing, apart from “I use it on other devices so I’ll use it here too”.

Moved from Google to DDG a few years ago, I have no reason really to move to another search as i’m satisfied with duckduckgo, but i’m eyeing Kagi.

DDG has been fast, responsive, works fine when proxied via a datacenter IP (unlike other services that start throwing capchas at you), looks familiar/like Google to the untrained eye, and image search works as you’d expect. If you’re coming from google, to be honest there’s no reason to pick it specifically, there are a wealth of search engines to choose from.

Approaching it with google-style searches often yields shit results. My search style adjusted over time, and now I find it much better than Google for my use.

As a sidenote, I’ve found Searx and Yandex are better for niche/unpopular sites (especially those with user-submitted content), as well as 🚢🏴‍☠️.

Edit: rephrasing opinions to sound as such

    lemann,

    Globalization and capitalism babyy

Not a fan of the latter but that’s life ☹️
