lolcatnip,

No you don’t, unless you pronounce it like “nessa”.

lolcatnip,

Who are they selling your data to?

lolcatnip, (edited )

So literally no one, then?

I don’t know who started this trend of “showing ads is the same thing as selling data” but it’s fucking irritating to see so many people confidently wrong about something they could figure out themselves if they thought about Google’s business model for 30 seconds.

lolcatnip,

You effectively can’t just talk to women on dating sites. Thanks to how matching works, you have to successfully sell yourself with pictures to get your profile read, and successfully sell yourself with words in the profile before you can actually talk with anyone.

Back before matching was a thing, it wasn’t much better. You could talk but you’d usually be ignored because the woman’s inbox would be filled with too much crap for her to go through it all.

lolcatnip,

People born around 1980 are Xennials or the Oregon Trail generation. We’re kind of a blend of gen X and millennials.

lolcatnip,

Generations are as real as genres.

IMHO you would have been within your rights to yank that guy’s console out of his hands and smash it.

Of course the risk escalating wouldn’t be worth it, but you’d have the moral high ground at least.

lolcatnip,

IIRC there’s an episode of Enterprise where Ferengis try to capture the crew to sell them as slaves

lolcatnip,

Your government used to be quite good at providing healthcare.

lolcatnip,

I’ve seen dedicated Christmas stores before, and you’re ignoring how every store becomes a Christmas store after Thanksgiving.

They’re not supporting him because they’re worried about his finances. They’re supporting him because they have faith in his leadership. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t care. Lots of CEOs are just empty suits, but Altman clearly has been doing something his workers liked.

lolcatnip,

As far as I can recall, no further attacks were prevented. I disagree with calling it “pointless”, because it was the right decision given what was known at the time.

lolcatnip,

If I was living in a tent under an overpass, I’d LOVE to move into a building like that.

lolcatnip,

Space shuttles would typically orbit with their top side facing towards Earth. Probably because the bottom is completely covered with ceramic tiles.

lolcatnip,

Not so much willful ignorance as backwards reasoning. They desperately want to believe the world is fair and they earned whatever success they’ve had in their lives, so they adopt beliefs that lead to those conclusions.

I struggled with it a lot in my 20s. If you’ve grown up with the idea that the world is basically a pretty decent place, it’s hard to accept how fucked up everything is, so there’s a natural tendency to try to explain away the things you learn about so you don’t have to confront the harsh reality directly.

lolcatnip,

I, too, enjoy undermining game developers’ efforts to entertain me in the way I’ve paid for.

lolcatnip,

Personal ownership is just as bad. That leads to OG feudalism.

237 mL. It’s a US unit.

Edit: I just realized I have a 2-cup measuring cup and I’ve never noticed how weird that sounds until now.

lolcatnip,

Yeah. I’m 44 and in terrible shape (in terms of exercise, etc.), but even so, I’m a long way from “everything hurts”.

lolcatnip,

Who’s “they”, exactly? Certainly not the average Israeli or Palestinian.

lolcatnip,

Why would people work for an abusive employer when they don’t particularly need to work at all?
