Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

Nah, I created a Lemmy account at the start of June (at least the Jerboa installation date says that) and uninstalled boost a few days later. Only checked in on Reddit from time to time with libreddit, to have a look at the John Oliver party.

I deleted or mass-edited all my comments and sent an GDPR request. Only thing left after that is the account deletion.

Didn’t want to give them any traffic anymore, so I avoided everything about it.

All your shopping behaviour and more can be tracked easily by card purchases. Cash purchases are much harder to track.

At least that’s how I see the advantage of cash here. Maybe I do miss something though

I’m using Linux for desktop since years - even my non tech savvy girlfriend uses KDE without issues on her laptop.

What was your issue?

I can’t stand to work with Windows. Is gruesome slow and confusingly designed. Configuration is splittered across the system. Some parts in GUI setting tools, some part in registry, some part in specific files.
Error codes are completely useless under Windows. In Linux the error message gives me at least a clue what’s happening.

I can’t understand how anybody can really work with Windows. Gladly I can do 99% of everything in Linux. Only some industry hardware configuration tools are still stuck on Windows.

Never worked nightshifts?
The cleaning crew at the hotel on my last business trips are always extremely noisy. But I’ve just hit the bed after my shift, some breakfast and a beer.
Would be nice to at least once get 6 full hours of sleep…

SearX installed could be a solution

Ah, you were 9mins faster than me ;-)

Also you’re losing space to file system stuff. So it will always look smaller than it is

So… What’s the purpose of the ban then?
Is this but just totally stupid and implemented completely useless, because people in power can’t grasp what they are deciding on?

Just like your toothbrush and pretty much everything else
This stuff is everywhere…

But yeah, shit stained towels aren’t the way to go. And I sometimes don’t trust how clean I think I am…

Well, the Laptop is still not released. Not sure what I can say more about it :-\

Anyone have some experience with StarLabs?

Ordered a StarFighter like more than half a year ago and am losing confidence in the company…

What do you guys do when you want to run unmaintained programs? (lemmy.world)

I recently wanted to run tegaki, and my experience is pretty much summed up by the meme. I consider myself fairly tech-savvy, but I just couldn’t figure out how to compile it. So I just gave up, downloaded the .exe and put it into a fresh wine prefix. After installing CJK fonts, everything ran fine. Now I’m trying to get...

Well, then you assume wrong

Linux just gives you the options. Under windows you’d be just sol

Is something like barrier/synergy already working with wayland?
I wanted to try it so badly, but controlling multiple computers with one set of keyboard & mouse is quite essential to my workflow.

Also, does X forwarding over ssh work in some way?
Like, can I open remote GUI programs over ssh on my wayland, like on X11? And less important for me, but still, also the other way round?

Thanks upfront!
I have some FOMO here, but last time I checked wayland couldn’t provide me those things, I need for work :-(

Woah, this is so fucking perfect!
And of course I missed it until 2023 was already over here…

I can never differ between am and pm, because we don’t use that here - well, at least I always mix it up

mn instead was very intuitive

e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

I’m reading a lot papers after I switched positions in my job. I felt reading on my display annoying. I can’t draw on the PDF easily nor able to read while I code (not without switching windows). And printing papers is annoying too. I can’t search and the physical paper pile up quickly....

I currently live the remarkable 2 and also had the first one. Wouldn’t want to live without it, but the software is still not really there…
There are some patched versions on GitHub with more functionality, but never tried it.

Company itself argues, they want to be as near to paper as possible. so not many features, which is a fair design choice, but the software still feels sluggish and unoptimized imho

Panaeolus cyanescens can be grown at home - at least there are finished sets, I couldn’t get to fruit mine with cow dung, as planned… But the original substrate worked well

Yeah, but then I’ve a web exposed service and I want keep a low profile as possible with what I’m exposing. So I guess as long as there aren’t many users to manage, wireguard (or a tailscale configuration) could work out for OP

naeap,
@naeap@sopuli.xyz avatar

I’ve setup wireguard, because it’s only me and an employee using the services. But with that, externally I don’t even seem to have a port open. But wireguard is so fast to be online, that I’m just always connected as soon as I’m online - using a domain and an IP update script

Laptop not working after installing nimdow

I have installed nimdow window manager. I have auto-login enabled. Nimdow is the default option. The only options I have at boot are (from the bootloader): default, timeout, edit, resolution, print and help (help is not working). How am I supposed to go back to GNOME or disable auto-login? I tried accessing the recovery shell,...

naeap,
@naeap@sopuli.xyz avatar

As long as the laptop boots, you should be able to switch to a TTY console, where you have a complete shell interface to your system after logging in (in said TTY console). So, being greeted with a login screen or something is a win here - but you’re very vague in your report.

The GUI is only just a program and has nothing to do with your boot options in BIOS or bootloader (like grub).

Using CTRL-ALT-[F1-9/0] you can switch between your virtual consoles and on only one of them your GUI is running.
You can use any other one to change anything on the system from CLI.
You should also be able to stop the current GUI/X11 Session and directly start the window manager you wish - temporarily to fix your system, if you’re not confident in the CLI.

That would be a real cool name for an OS specialized for old devices
