FWIW common libraries like ffmpeg and what not can contain bugs which video files could potentially abuse and exploit.

Is that a common risk? Probably not. But image libraries have been known to have such exploits.

navi,

Medical privacy is a great example.

Consider a situation like Texas right now where abortion went from a normal, legal thing to something that you can be fined and jailed for.

Would such a person be OK with the state having access to their medical records so they could jail or fine them?

People need to understand that much of privacy precautions are “layers” of security against “what if” scenarios that can sometimes be very real.

When youre watching Game of Thrones and season 8 finishes and you finally can stop bleeding from the eyeballs.

A pay to win method is using a service like Optery that you pay and they remove you from hundreds of data brokers, sometimes by hand.

navi,

I agree its the best (basically AV swiss army knife) but plenty of people on here aren’t very technically competent if you look at the questions coming in.

Never a bad time to start though!

Share your favorite automations

I’ve been running HA for a while, and it’s been working well; I haven’t had to change much in a few months. That being said, it’s fun to tinker with it, and I’m curious to hear what kind of automations the rest of the community is using. What automations are you most proud of? What are your favorite? What kind of...

navi,

No automation to share at the moment but the “weather lamp” is a really fun idea!

Hosting the software is only part of the problem, and not the hardest one from my experience.

The great spam catcher of Microsoft and Google are incrediblely dense and arcane, mail will often be rejected or swallowed from small mail servers.

navi,

What’s really wild is that it’s so abnormal for men to get positive comments on things that 10 comments in four years is “wild”.

I don’t want to be a downer though, so… nice hat!

Ways to pirate music as convenient as Spotify?

The reason I gave up on MP3’s and subscribed to Spotify was because Spotify was easy. I’ve been listening “Iron Maiden - Empire of the Clouds” song every day and like a week ago, its removed. This was the last straw for me. Right now I’m trying to find “Stremio” of the music world. Can someone assist?...

navi,

Plexamp is a great Plex music front end if you already have a Plex server with music.

Imagine it waking up and it slithering that tongue down into your stomach.

navi,

It could be poorly optimized or non-ideally programmatically poking their service.

But instead of working with devs or releasing a real API they did this shit.

I just deleted my entire library and redownloaded it.

A lot of my files were shitty 480p versions of movies from the Napster days. Now they’re all 1080p, with a few 720p exceptions (mainly tv series episodes). All in all 500 something files in total. Now just watching uTorrent slowly download them all. Hopefully my VPN keeps the eyes off of me…

navi,

qBitTorrent is one of the standard clients.

You are dumb as fuck if you think SpaceX is not a step function of innovation for mass to orbit launch capabilities.

Here’s a chart from last year illustrating this from last year.

payloadspace.com/spacex-rules-the-ultimate-roost-…

You may hate Starlink for what ever reason and Ol Musky, but SpaceX has completely changed the game for launch capabilities and proved rocket reuse works.

It’s easy for “SpaceX to explode way more” when NASA has launched a single rocket in the last 13 years. Are you referring to Falcon 9? Starship? Falcon 1?

navi,

If the words I used were too big for you then you might need to read up more and get an actual opinion on space launch companies 😂.

This is just a Pepsi Float after it had an hour to melt.

ABTorrents is one of the good ones. Private though.

Wow the pokemon thing is legit. What a perfect example of the sad state of legal content consumption.

Don’t worry! You’re in the Good Place.

Self-hosted or personal email solutions?

I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I’m hoping to create a unique and “professional” looking email account like johndoe@gmail.com or john@doe.com. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for...

navi,

FWIW ive used Google for about ten years for email and have never modified my DNS records. They seem extremely stable.

It’s basically a Gmail account with a custom domain.

Troubleshooting a pirate copy of a video game (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

EDIT: Oh, I’m dumb as hell. InstallShield was opening a new popup that for some reason appeared under all my other windows and didn’t appear in the taskbar, so I didn’t realize it was open. Once I finally noticed it dicking around trying to fix things, I clicked through and it installed fine. I’m gonna leave a comment...

Is Zoo Tycoon 2 worth it if you like Zoo Tycoon with Marina Mania and Dino Digs?

navi,

Yeah but can they play what ever music they want for the last few hours after the lobby is closed?

Small wins.
