I don’t even have a 3d printer yet so I don’t have a horse in this race, but given how countries are clamping down on 3d printers and such, like that thing I saw from lawmakers in new york (usa) where they want people to pass a background check or such to buy a 3d printer,

wouldn’t it be a good idea to have a tracker that does 3d print stuff? Does the thingiverse etc have print files for copyrighted objects and components that breach patents and such? Or dare I say it, weapons and that side of things (which I don’t support but it’s a thing)?

I think a proper, free from national control resource is the best way. I hope such a thing exists. I can see myself one day needing to replace a part in my coffee machine or something, and thingiverse/etc not having the part file because it breaks the patent/intellectual property of the coffee machine company to host it, you know?

My man, I can barely afford to pay to heat my sick, elderly parents living room (yes just that room, the rest of the house stays cold, can’t afford it).

I’m not donating money to anyone at all and won’t for the foreseeable future. When I do, it’ll be to cancer research <3

But I believe FOSS is a noble cause and if I were wealthy I absolutely would.

Any way to add an "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message at the end of shutdown?

I want to do this for my raspberry pis since they don’t have an ACPI system in place. I think it would look really nice combined with XFCE and the chicago95 theme. So I would prefer it if it were showing it like the windows 95 shutdown screen, maybe using an image file? There’s a lot of information on the shutdown process on...

We’re talking about our fucking habitat and ecosystem we need to survive.

Are we though? I see so much “The earth is gonna die!” and “Life is doomed!” everywhere, but as this guy correctly points out, the planet will be fine.

In fact, humans will endure too. It’s just our current civilisation that’s in danger, that’s all.

But people do like to hyperbolise all over the place haha, and people start to believe it. It’s important to make the distinction.

In b4 the council knocks the wall down because it wasn’t fixed by a qualified brickie.

To be fair, this has some merit, imagine a wall collapsing and hurting a toddler, the responsibility for it lies on the council, and so they want the work done properly or not at all, basically. That’s why they’d rather knock this down if it were not done by them, just to play it safe.

That’s wise too, because as we all know, humans are often very dumb, and just because this guy thinks he knows how to fix a wall, doesn’t mean he’s actually any good at it.

Unfortunately the council err on the side of not bothering to fix it at all, usually…
