Trunk based, eh? Yeah, we do that on a couple teams where I’m at, too. I like the philosophy, but force pushing the same commit over and over as you’re incorporating review feedback is antisocial, especially when you’ve got devs trying to test your changes out on their machines.
I’ve only tried the VS code hunk stager thing, and found it cumbersome compared to command line, but if you can make a GUI work for you ya go for it. I’ve never found it worth the trouble personally
Since transitioning to work, but still keeping a notebook, I use the following. Colours based entirely on what pencils/highlighters I had when I first started taking notes at work.

I know some Java folks, but my sampling is biased because I meet them where I work - places that predominantly use the younger languages. Actually, I happen to know that the MoH in particular (and probably lots of other institutions) wrap their COBOL/JCL in a lot of Java, so that most devs never need to dive into the “real backend” if they want to just stay at the Java level.
Java people seem like family people. But from what I’ve observed, their job doesn’t seem any different. You can work in javascript, or python, and still insist on clocking out at 16, 1700. But I only work at startups or seat of your pants kinds of places, so I know about what I hear. 🤷
Makes sense. When I was starting up, you couldn’t keep me from it. I just hacked for the joy of making things and seeing what would happen. But now it’s all tied up in work, performance, marketability, ROI, etc.
Even when I think about doing some hobby video game dev, there’s a voice at the back of my head telling me it would be more profitable to brush up on OpenTofu or whatever.
Nowadays I find a lot of games feel like too much work and/or anxiety when I just want to relax for like, 30 minutes to an hour after a long day. On the other hand, the games specifically designed to help you unwind just feel boring imo....
It might not be for you, but it got me at a young age and you do get used to it. There really is a “flow state” to Tetris, where it can feel like you’re just noticing the pieces and they’re almost moving on their own.
It was actually kind of nice to take a break while you’re on the toilet. Whether that means checking your phone for fun, or just sitting in silence without looking at a screen. Both can be a break, depending on context.
Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.
Never had Disnkey, so this is more about Netflix. Back at the beginning, I didn’t mind paying a fair price for a service that made discovery and streaming easy and convenient. Plus subscriptions going to fund more interesting content? Amazing! Yeah, it’s a bit of platform capitalism, but the fees were reasonable and they spread the wealth in a way I agreed with.
I’m still not against a service that keeps its fees reasonable for what it’s providing.
I feel like it must vary. Because I’ve stayed up late and found myself quivering against a wall hearing things, and other times pulled all-nighters without issue. I guess for the latter I was busy doing things rather than just fretting.
Not at all! Many people feel depressed and overwhelmed late at night, when they’re most tired. It’s the reason my partner and I have a rule not to make plans or talk about finances before bed, because it all seems doom n gloom.
