Big difference is a modern sailboat like a ketch or sloop can maintain a straight course as much as 45 degrees into the wind. A Victorian era square rigger is greatly more limited with a range about 60 degrees off either side of downwind. A kite would be even more limited, probably within 45 degrees so it would only be useful when going mostly downwind. Still if it’s cheap and easy to deploy it’s free energy when it can be used. An interesting parallel is the spinnaker sail used on a typical sailboat flies much like a kite and can only be used within a similar downwind range. It’s a very powerful sail when it can be deployed.

That Eucerin makes really good stuff. They have a thick healing cream that’s amazing, like supercharged moisturizer. I use it on my feet once in a while to avoid skin problems.

It works great for that. It’s also good in automotive for bulb sockets, I’ve used it for that as well. It’s amazing actually, slop some in a socket and next time you pull a bulb it will still look brand new, even if not well protected as the case with antique cars. You would think it might interfere with electrical contact an Vaseline is completely non-conductive, it doesn’t seem to at all. You can also use it on car battery terminals and it will completely stop any corrosion, however I actually use 90W gear oil on those since it attracts less dirt and works as well.

I use it to lubricate machine parts at times. Also good coating for rust protection like the sockets of outdoor bulbs or tools in storage. There’s better products for skin protection. Years ago it was commonly used for infant diaper rash, but again there’s better products for that now. I don’t think I’ve ever used it on my body, it’s made from petroleum so it’s really just highly refined axle grease.

I have this thing about astronomy. Kind of a perspective thing of our place in the cosmos. I try to remember all the distances of planets from the sun and distances of moons from their planets. Also the diameters of solar objects. There’s other factoids I try to remember about neighboring solar systems and galactic bodies. For example I remember the black hole at the center our galaxy is called Sagitarius A and its mass is 4M suns. The black hole at the center Andromeda our closest major galaxy at 2.5M light years is 25M suns. The black hole at the center M87, the closest active galaxy at 50M light years is 4B suns. I didn’t look that stuff up so tell me if I didn’t get it right.

I know that game, used to play it on BBS in the early 90’s.

Depends on the monitor. It’s pretty horrific on a 27" desktop monitor. On a phone it’s probably good. Anyway, like I said I added an AA mod and it looks a lot better on the PC screen, still pretty crude though. I play a number of 2D games on my PC and Stardew Valley has outstandingly pixelated artwork in comparison. That’s not to say I don’t like the game, I like it a lot and have put a good number of hours into it.

Stardew Valley, hands down one of the graphically ugliest modern games, like 80’s console style. Though it’s a really good game and I’ve put a of lot of hours into it. People say it’s meant to look that way as intentional retro styling, but damn it’s ugly. I actually added a mod on PC to use AA on the blocky graphics and it makes it look a lot better.

There’s a good set of movies I rewatch a lot so I can’t say which is most often, but I’ll pick a couple.

The first Matrix movie is up there for me. I think it’s the best one and I’ve rewatched it the most. I’ve rewatched the following two, but not as much. I thought the fourth one was weird and produced too late so not going to watch that one again.

There’s an obscure movie called Hunter Prey (2010) that I’ve rewatched a lot. It’s a low budget sci-fi, but it’s almost like a play with limited settings, just a handful of actors, and limited special effects. I really like the story, actors, and setting plus the music is good. Probably most people would think it’s shit, but sometimes a low budget film can really nail it for me.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

Haven’t been there since the blackout, don’t miss it. I’ve always gone there with desktop browser running uBO so I never did see adds there except for inline stuff once in a while. That’s one nice thing about Lemmy, looks exactly the same whether the blocker is on or off.

Yeah I really miss those days of logical operands. Back in the Alta Vista days I could do Boolean searches, but yeah that’s been replaced with speech recognition which doesn’t work as well. To this day I still like the Boolean search better. Newer does not always mean better. Most of the time it only means dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.

I’m using Chrome and added an extension called Empty New Tab Page that makes Chrome open to a blank page. I had to do that because the Google home page got to be so annoying. Also removing the need to fetch content makes the browser and new tabs open faster.

A smart sort would be great. Maybe even some custom settings for it, like weights for community, upvotes, replies, etc.

Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

Does the reddit style format inherently make for a toxic environment? Or is it a culture of toxicity from the influx of reditors? For lack of a beter example, on stackoverflow, when someone down votes you, it comes with a comment saying how to improve. On mastodon, people can’t downvote you. These platforms are a joy to use,...

rm_dash_r_star,
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

I don’t think it’s the format. Forums generally get toxic when they’re too big. The negative influence of a toxic user is much greater than the positive influence of a non-toxic user. The bigger the user base the more toxic users. Eventually it gets to a critical mass where you’re seeing enough toxic replies to make the whole platform seem toxic.

Reddit is 18 years old. Lots of time to attract toxic users. I wasn’t on Reddit from the start, but people have said Reddit didn’t suffer toxicity until after it was around 10 years old. Lemmy is four years old now so it will be a while. Though Lemmy may attract a smaller less toxic crowd and avoid toxicity indefinitely.

I don’t have a high opinion of community at Stack Overflow as it started out elitist by nature of its policies and rules. Yeah that’s going to breed toxicity right out of the gate. I have to admit Stack Overflow has been a really good resource for technical information at times, but its community is harsh. As much as I’ve used it to find good technical information, I’ve never made an account there or had any desire to post there.

No money hungry executives

I think that's going to be the key difference. You can destroy something good, but to really destroy it takes an executive.

I wonder that too since according to present statistics (the-federation.info/platform/73) there's over 1.2M Lemmy accounts. The 6mo active users count is a little over 40k. Now I know many of those may be lurkers or people like me who have logins on other instances, but a good number of those would have to be bot accounts. So what are they laying in wait for? Could be shameless promotion and upvoting, but I'm not seeing any of that yet. Hope we're not in for a shitstorm.

rm_dash_r_star,

I go to lemmyverse.net to explore communities if that's any help. I've never promoted any so I don't have any advice to offer there.

Think I'd have to agree with that, I don't think it's ready for an "event" at this point. It will be at some point, but not yet. Still something to think about.

You can view if user created communites are enabled on your instance here; lemmy.ml/api/v3/site

That link outputs a wall of text, but all the Instance settings are at the top after "local_site". Optionally you can format the output with a json formatter like jsonformatter.org which makes the output easy to read.

In the case for lemmy.ml, you see ["community_creation_admin_only": true] which means users can not create communities. You can check other instances for one that does allow user created communities. Just replace the root name in that link and get the settings there.

The instance I'm on does allow user created communities. Some instances actually state their settings in the sidebar for convenience, the one I'm on does that.

Be nice to see that fixed, when is 0.18 going to be officially released? That seems like a pretty high number on release candidates. Though I understand there's some controversy with captcha removal, how's that going to pan out?
