Correct me if I’m wrong, but manufacturer warranties are not transferrable, so when you bought it secondhand, the warranty didn’t convey to you.

My experience with WD and Seagate has been that they request proof of purchase, which, for me, was my original invoice.

Is there such a thing as split-screen grep?

I want to run a command and see all of its output on the left hand side, while simultaneously searching/grepping for particular lines on the right hand side. In other words, I want a temporary vertically split screen in my CLI, ideally with scrollback on each side of the split, but where I expect the left hand side to be...

Tmux is also good for long operations, as tmux is running as a server and you can close the terminal while tmux chugs away. Others can also connect to the tmux session through ssh and share screens.

You have to LOVE the stance: leanback with spread wings to communicate detached interest. Just like this silly ringneck.

If you’re running TrueNAS, the replication feature was the smoothest and easiest way to move large amounts of data when I did it 18 months back. Once the destination location was accessible from the sending host, it was as simple as kicking off a snapshot, resulting in a fully usable replica on the receiving host. IIRC, IXsystems staff told me rsync can be problematic compared to the replication/snapshot system, as permissions and other metadata can be lost.

How many of you run a Linux phone (Pine64, Librem etc) as your daily driver?

I was going through Pine64’s page again after I found the latest KDE announcement. With that said, I seem to see a lot of issues with firmware on the Pine, whilst the Librem is just plain out of budget for me. Was interested in how many people here run a Linux mobile as a daily driver, and how has your experience been?...

I second the recommendation for lineage OS. I’ve been using it since 2011 with my Nexus S (when it was Cyanogen). Works, defaults to de-googled, but easy to install gapps at the same time (follow instructions because it needs to be done before first boot).

I’ll never run a stock ROM again if I can help it, and so far…

YouTube Ad-Blocker policy - Can it be explained by ad revenue numbers?

First, a disclaimer: I’m no expert, and I only know what is on these documents I linked. I haven’t read in-depth reporting by real investigative journalists, nor any reporting sourced or quoted from YT insiders (When I see articles about the ad-blocking, I knock wood that SmartTube is still working and keep scrolling, keen...

Thanks for the comment and link

After reading the adalytics report, it sounds more like ads that were meant to be viewed mid-stream and (presumably) on YouTube content, only when clicked, were instead served on auto-play, looping and muted on third-party websites that donn meet the standards of the sold product.

So like you said, but it seems more that buyers thought their ads would run on certain locations and circumstances that ensured higher viewer interest, and instead were being charged for ads played off screen, behind other ads, and some even viewed by “declared bots”.

Yikes. Refunds (credit, excuse me) indeed.

One point I forgot to make above: I’m not sure if we can say the Q3 2023 revenue growth can be related to the new ad-blocking-blocking or not, but I suspect there’s a piece of that in there.

Having to disable protected services to stop updates from rebooting in the middle of a nine hour encode was it for me. Checking on my encode at what should have been 90% and find my PC at the login screen was it for me. Handbrake works better for me in Linux, too.

How is it different from Krita? What does it do that isn’t done by FOSS?

I understood you weren’t advocating for Windows (as an Arch user? The very idea!), but your mention of your friend returning to Windows got me thinking about my friends laptop and how icky it felt.

Glad there are fewer and fewer barriers to using Linux full time these days.

I’ve been off windows for a long time, and when I was forced to use it, it was enterprise, locked down and stripped by knowledgeable IT teams.

Yesterday, I had my first exposure to Win 11 S mode. What a piece of crap. Not just the way its locked down, but the incessant Onedrive ads, broken settings app with missing features, AI buzzword addons, sloppy UI and general lack of control over your own computer.

Recommending my friend install Linux ASAP with my support. Nobody should have to endure that much cruft and garbage on their owned computer. They can’t even install software outside of the MS store? Gross.

Your experience is vastly different from mine.

My GF had a Windows laptop until this week and her last straw was three reboots in a row, each with over an hour of waiting for updates on shutdown and startup. She never asked for the updates, and wasn’t asked ifbahe wanted to perform them.

Now her password is required for any updates, and she controls her computer,as it should be.

I'm currently downloading a show that is on a service to which I subscribe

I have a Galaxy Tab S7 and for a trip to Spain I downloaded some stuff to watch on the flight. When I got on the plane none of the stuff downloaded on Disney+ would play. Maybe an issue with downloading to the SD card? I don’t know, but regardless Disney offers SD card as a download destination so they should make sure it is...

I’m in another country for a while and can’t get English subtitles on my Netflix content on my Nvidia Shield TV. I was using a translator app and pausing the video to understand garbled audio and gave up watching.

I don’t dare contact support, so I’m planning to cancel and lean into my eye patch.

If you are seeing temps out of spec for your CPU, its not unheard of for thermal paste to dry or even shift if the laptop has been through some chassis strain. Could be worth a careful examination.

How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

Have you compared kdenlive to shotcut? Wondering how they compare as I’ve been working with SC for a few months an dfinally getting used to it, but the lack of a titler feature is a glaring omission.

I think it was an IBM/MS OS. Forget if it was desktop, server or “other” though.

Edit: that’s right, it was IBM hoping to privatize the OS on a hard-to-clone PC (PS/2) when they saw their market share eroding quickly. arstechnica.com/…/half-an-operating-system-the-tr…

Here’s a version that will do a batch (in the current folder/directory)

for i in *.opus; do ffmpeg -i “$i” -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 -map_metadata 0 “${i%.*}.mp3”; done

I had no idea that you could download movies from the 90ies from archive.org (jeena.net)

I couldn’t find the Flintstones movie from 1994 anywhere but googling it I found it here archive.org/details/the-flintstones_202304 and you can either download it via torrent or directly. On top of it it says that the movie is CC0 which means Public Domain. But that can’t really be, it’s only 29 years old....
