How do you address a letter to an army soldier or even a navy sailor on a ship?

I was watching Band of Brother and wondering how those paratroopers got letters from home. Did their family need to know their nearest base? Or could they simply write their name and battallion? If I want to mail a package to a sailor do I just the ship’s name? Or a port? I’m not actually mailing anything I’m just curious...

It’s actually kind of neat. They have their own “state” codes for the Air Force or Navy, and that’s how the mail is handed over to the military. They do have to give an apo or the like, but the deployed know that before leaving so family knows how to write.

It gets murkier once it’s inside how they route the mail, don’t know for sure, but as long as you follow USPS guidelines it’ll get to them. So, part of your answer at least

It’s more I don’t have them all checked out, and a good chunk are mirrors of github, so I’ll have to list out each one and push to a new remote, mirrors will have to be setup again, and I also use the container and package registries. I’m pretty embedded. It’s not impossible, but it’s a weekend project for sure.

“Normal” is a funny word - it’s means something that’s completely relative to you and your experiences. So for me, I’d ask:

People that went to high school with only 1 floor, did you think that was a bit odd?

People live different lives, normal means different things to different people. Let this be a good lesson to learn: Where you went to school, what your family cooks for dinner, if you drive/walk/take the train to work/school, if you speak one language - none of what you know as “normal” is normal to someone else. More importantly, someone else who experienced different things are not “odd” and those things are also not “odd” - they are just as normal to them as yours are to you. People aren’t different, odd, or weird - they’re just people. They just had different experiences. Obviously I’m alluding to things, but generally even the most base thoughts like this I like to reinforce that idea.

A better way to ask that may have been upvoted would have been “People who attended high school with 3+ stories, what was that like compared to a 1-story high school?” and give an example of how you only experienced a 1 story.

For me, so many crowded stairwells between classes. You learned what floors had the best bathrooms.

Second there. Running kubernetes at home is great - to learn it for work.

If you don’t need to use it for work then you’re going to spend weeks if not months setting it up for very little payoff at home

This was probably intentional, they don’t really need to say that somebody unlike or undisliked something. You just need to know that their vote is no longer valid. This is probably easier with Mastodon as well because they can and just erase whatever about it was, plus one or minus one, and essentially they don’t have a vote anymore.

Because if you really think about it, do you really need to know if somebody undisliked versus unlike something? Or do you only need to know that their vote is now removed?

I haven’t tried this one, but be cautious. 10g gets HOT. anything that’s passively cooled id be suspicious about.

I will correct you on that information with a vague quote I heard somewhere

Don’t say that to the guy who was complaining about too many fries a few days ago

Oh that’s shady, I assumed it would be on the main menu or something but a full screen ad popping up before the menu? Barf Ubisoft. Low even for them

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yep, you can easily sort it just because of the ordering. It’s a full standard

scrubbles,

Right? This wasn’t “No don’t take my data but also find my car” it was “Please for the love of god find my car my child is in there” followed with “Right for a modest fee of $150 ma’am we sure can”.

Has nothing to do with privacy. Maybe they ask a boilerplate “We have to ask but you do give us consent right” followed by a “What the fuck do you think fucking yes!”, but not asking for money. That’s not the time.

I don’t think they’re saying that no one thought of it, but he’s right as a programmer those edge cases are always pushed out, kicking the can down the road. That doesn’t mean VW isn’t liable - it’s their fault still - they should have been able to help. But we can understand how it happened.

They probably called some guy on the 24/7 help line making minimum wage who will get fired if he ever gave out a free service and probably gets dinged if a call gets escalated. Those processes probably don’t exist. They sure as hell will now.

Like most things fox news has turned the entire debate into an us vs them thing. Gun control is surprisingly something that most Republicans and Democrats agree on.

well then please don’t shoot down the next best alternative. We would love HSR, hell even faster trains through areas like the Midwest, but no one is building them and no one wants to lobby for them. Until then we’re stuck in this car-centric hell, and EVs are the best alternative. (Again, we all know they’re not the best, they’re the best alternative)

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Great, I agree too, but go ahead and start lobbying the US government to build more.

I’m all for your suggestions, but the fact of the matter is we need solutions yesterday and to build what you’re talking about will take 10 years of lobbying alone. California HSR is going to be another 10 years and they’re already building it.

EVs are a stopgap measure, we all know it.

Yup, here in Iowa the vast, vast majority of corn is known as “cattle corn”, and as described it’s used for cattle (and biodiesel, and pigs). Most farmers only grow sweetcorn “for fun”, as a side thing compared to the huge subsidies for cattle corn.

My wedding ring was 30 dollars on Etsy. It has just as much meaning as a 10k diamond to me.

What's with the corporate obsession with customer feedback?

If you contact the customer support of your utility company, phone carrier, bank, or other service provider you’ll likely be flooded with requests to rate the experience and provide feedback. Likewise, corporate websites and email communications often solicit feedback via embedded buttons or links to online forms....

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup, they think they’re motivating us but anyone who has worked food service/retail knows that just demoralizes the fuck out of us. It’s rare enough when a customer actually fills out a slightly positive review, they gotta rip apart even the good ones.

We did this too, always a lesson in locking your computer. “Hey team I’ll be buying lunch today since I forgot to lock my computer!”

Just make sure it’s a small group and not 20 hungry people

I think it’s hard to just handwave and say “meme bad”. These are some of the people I’ve come across with it:

First the easy one, edgelords online want to rile people up. I personally don’t care, engaging them at all is just encouraging them. There are worse things to make memes about IMO, this is not one of them to get riled up over.

Second, people who genuinely don’t care about this and think it’s ridiculous the media covered it so much. I’m half in this boat, there are way more newsworthy things to cover than 5 people drowning in a custom made sub on a mission that they literally signed away their life to do. However,

Third, people who see this as a tragedy. The other half of me is here, at least one of the people genuinely wanted to see the Titanic. Which, maybe it’s hard for us to understand the price tag, but if you had a dream of seeing it since you were a child, wanted nothing more than to see it, and were offered it, would you? And if not, if someone offered you a trip to see what you wanted to more than anything else in the world, would you want to? Go step on the moon? It’s like if someone offered you the ability to literally go to a fictional place, then that 250k doesn’t seem so much, if that was your once in a lifetime must do once and exactly once, if you saved up for 20 years. Those are the people I mourn.

Fourth, and I think this is a small group, people who are legit sad but treat humor as a coping mechanism. I think a lot of people forget about them, they aren’t trying to make situations like this into something controversial, they just cope differently, and that’s okay.
