What’s the good urbanist response to homelessness?

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I love the top one, because it’s the same way they deal with pigeons. They see poor people as just another pest.

@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Fortunately, it isn’t a package deal. You can give people homes without taking away their rights.

Humans are corruptible, no matter who, and even the best of us would be corrupted when it comes to someone they love.

Agreed! That’s why I think it would be better if the workers ran things, instead of a few corrupt CEOs.

I’ve always loved Linux, even when it was kicking my ass. I can’t imagine approaching it with the attitude “Ugh, I have to force myself to use this thing, and I know that it’s going to frustrate me”.

That sort of thing is a self-fulfilling prophecy, because everybody has cognitive biases. Since you expect it to be frustrating, you’re going to remember all the times that it is and forget the times when it isn’t.

Wouldn’t rm -rf / eat /home, too? That doesn’t get backed up in a snapshot…

Why should I?

When you steal books from a library, you’re preventing others from accessing those books. When you download a digital copy of a book, you aren’t.

Same thing with money. If you stole my money, I’d be upset, but I wouldn’t be upset if I had infinite money.

If we were selfish, we wouldn’t be sharing our files in the first place, and the system would fall apart.

It’s the fact that we aren’t selfish that filesharing works at all.

So, when you’re licking the boot, do you start at the heel or the toe?

I think that funding creators is great if you have the money and the inclination. I just don’t think that it makes you an asshole if you don’t.

There are creators whom I fund because they give me exclusive extra content on their Patreons or sometimes if I just think that their work is important enough and I want to see it continue. If I decide that I need that money for something else, that’s up to me.

Windows 11 may be the king of operating systems

In what world? I’ve just started using it at work, and I swear the other day it tried to sell me an XBox controller. Not like I was on the Web and an ad popped up, no. It was part of the operating system!

Can you imagine going back in time 10 years and telling somebody “In the future, Microsoft is going to put pop-up ads in Windows.” People would think you were crazy!

How does that work with you’re installing a new system? Do the subvolumes just show up like partitions?

seitanic, (edited )
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

So, it doesn’t sound like it would be useful for me, since the reason why I have separate partitions in the first place is so that I can re-install a distro or install a new distro without having to back up /home first.

There is a huge difference between criticizing a government and criticizing a religion

Agreed, but I don’t think it’s religious bigotry; I think it’s racial bigotry. Antisemitism is a form of racism. Do you think the Nazis gave atheist Jews a free pass?

Damn, the Lovecraftian monsters in this thread are going to haunt my nightmares.

And…?

OWS was run by anarchists. They had zero goals or leadership, and they actually seemed proud of that fact. It’s kind of mind-boggling that they thought they could accomplish anything by simply camping out indefinitely.

In view of that, I really can’t blame the identitarians for trying to co-opt. If they had won, there would’ve at least been goals and an agenda, instead of…sitting in tents all day.

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The funny thing is you’re both right.

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Try telling that to…every software company ever.

Even when the Proletariat does win, they often still install a dictatorship. Because those are the kinds of people who lead revolutions.
