I’ll get some angry comments about the IRL version.

(Turn on the sound. Those poor guys have no idea what to do.)

shalafi,

Yep, America all right. Couple of things:

  • In some states it’s illegal to leave children of a certain age unsupervised. I think it’s 11 and below here? People do it anyway and no one’s looking to prosecute, but it’s a thing.
  • I can’t speak for every municipality in America, but the elementary schools around here do not allow kids to walk or bike to school. Either that, or every single parent, no exceptions, disallows it, because I’ve never seen a child that young coming into or leaving the school on their own. FFS, when I used to pick up my stepson, same car every day, the teacher had to put their hand on the roof and look me in the eye through a rolled-down window. That was literally the rule.

So like I said, “some of the younger ones aren’t mature enough or raised independently enough”. It sucks, but it’s true.

I have an 8 and 10-yo. They love my house because I allow them freedom. We went to a huge camping place to get married this weekend, local outfitter sort of thing. I gave them some instructions and warnings, cut them loose. Their helicopter mom would shit her pants if she knew they walked all over the woods alone.

(And of course we got the usual comment below crying about capitalism. I’m not sure if these people expect that no one works for a living, or they don’t do it on a coordinated schedule, or what.)

shalafi,

And I walked or biked to my elementary school every day in the 70’s. Many kids are raised very differently now, hence my comment.

I’m working to make my small children independent, their mother, my-ex wife, is working to keep them dependent.

shalafi,

Beginning later is a non-starter. Parents gotta get to work.

Could work for high school, but some of the younger ones aren’t mature enough or raised independently enough, so there’s that.

shalafi,

I carry plastic retail bags when hiking and kayaking.

If you flatten them out, fold them over a few times, roll them tight and wrap with a rubber band, you get a really tiny, portable bag.

shalafi,

If you’ve never been a smoker, maybe withhold your opinion on the effects?

shalafi,

That’s amazing! I’m 52 and from a small family and this stuff has always confused me.

shalafi,

I FEEL that. I thought another man was my father until 8th grade.

“Who’s this Steve guy you’re talking about?”

Everyone looked at me like I just grew a second head.

shalafi,

It struck me as odd as well. Those words don’t go together, like, at all. :)

And besides, GenX never give two shits about the Axis powers. The Cold War was our war. And while I didn’t hate the Russians back then, I sure as hell do now.

shalafi,

'71 here! We SO loved all the Robotech/Macros stuff back in the day. We’d never seen anything like it!

But yeah, I block about every anime group I find because it’s either hyper-sexualized little girls or furry fucking.

So for me, it has nothing to do with it being Japanese in origin. Hell, we were the original weeaboos. And for that matter, my wife is half Japanese.

As for the rest of GenX? Obviously I can’t speak for all of us, but I’m not sure I’ve heard anyone say, “I don’t like that Japanese/Russian/communist art/entertainment.” That would be weird.

shalafi, (edited )

I had to explain this to a coworker 10-years ago and she thought I was fucking with her.

“Go Google ‘furry’, but do it on your own PC. Can’t swear what you might see.”

“OH MY GOD! YOU WEREN’T JOKING!!!”

shalafi,

As a hot pepper fanatic, I love this trivia:

Birds don’t have receptors for capsaicin, the chemical that makes peppers hot. They could chow a bag of Moruga Scorpions with zero effect.

Evolution’s idea being, birds will swallow the seeds whole, poop them all around. Mammals will chew them up and destroy the seeds, so they evolved a defense specifically against us.

shalafi,

Wiztree is so much faster than WinDirStat it’s silly. Never looked back. Maybe things have changed?

shalafi,

How I got my last one. One-eyed, starved, raggedy assed cat just sitting there, asking for help.

shalafi,

Almost always a ticket, assuming that’s the only law you’re breaking. And they will certainly look for more!

Funny story, I was arrested in Chicagoland one time for not having a license. (Lost my wallet, still had to work.) Officer had a high school kid (cop wannabe) for a ride-along and wanted to demonstrate arrest and booking procedures.

In and out in 45 minutes but got stuck 30 miles from home.

shalafi,

Because it’s not “real” work. You gotta get paid up front and put a limit on changes. You’re either good, or you’re not. Let the market sort it out, but don’t work for free.

shalafi,

I didn’t have a ready answer to this post, but yeah, already banned:

  • Chic Fil-A
  • Hobby Lobby
  • Papa Johns

Add:

  • Jimmy John’s
shalafi,

You ARE lucky! And probably a solid performer. But young people need this info. You have to ask for the money. Why would anyone give you money for showing up to work?

shalafi,

who admired his geopolitical strategy

That’s very much what I’m asking! I’m well aware of his sins, but was his influence 100% from making the rich richer?

shalafi,

See this comment? It’s a pretty good breakdown.

old.lemmy.world/comment/5707971

shalafi,

remember him for setting up talks with China, and detente with the Soviets. The founder of realpolitik and symbol of Western imperialism over the last half of the 20th century

Now we’re getting to my question!
