shasta, to asklemmy in For software devs, which job to pick

First job? Go with the financial firm, get 1-2 years of experience then leave. If you already had experience, I would say neither job is good. But getting your foot in the door is difficult. Most of your technical skills you pick up might not be transferable since it’s old tech like you mentioned but you should still get very valuable experience that you don’t have from school like working with version control strategies, release cycles, test/staging/production builds, writing tickets, prioritization, etc.

Some old tech is not as irrelevant as you may think too. If they have anything on Java, try to do that. It’s still widely used. But cobol, fortran, ada, php, that sort of thing… Those are dead or dying. You may not get the choice but you can at least state your preference and hope for the best.

Aside from brainwashing them all into forgetting about their religions, what other solution is there?

Fine with me, as long as I personally don’t have to look at ads.

shasta, to asklemmy in Tech workers - what did your IT Security team do that made your life hell and had no practical benefit?

Hm can’t say. I’m using bitbucket and it does block admins, though they all have the ability to go into settings and remove the approval requirement. No one does though because then the bad devs would be able to get changes in without reviews.

You can also lock down the repo to require approvals before merge into main branch to avoid this.

Surely IT can make an exception for you or create a VM with multiple NICs for you.

Doesn’t matter to the end user whose fault it is. The spirit of this discussion is what was done to make your life harder. If you want to, go ahead and read it as “IT workers, what stupid things were you mandated to do that made your workers jobs harder?” The end user doesn’t know why a thing happens, just that IT did it. They’ll complain to IT and if it’s not their fault, it’s their responsibility to push back on whoever is calling these shots. The idiot in charge won’t know any better unless he’s called out on his bullshit.

I have been feeling the same. I only really enjoy gaming with friends now because I like the social aspect. Otherwise, I’m filling my alone time with reading. It’s much more satisfying.

I think he’s referring to the last battle where everyone basically agrees that they are all doomed unless Frodo is still alive and has the ring so they decide since all hope is lost, they’ll put all their men on the front line in the hope of buying Frodo an opportunity to get to Mt Doom. But I think most of them only go along with it because they know they are pretty much gonna die either way.

I don’t think it’s saying to stop using the Internet, just that if you’re talking to someone preaching to avoid Amazon retail purchases to avoid giving them money with the goal of bringing down the company, pointing out the fact that only avoiding retail but still using websites that are hosted on AWS is hypocritical. It’s hypocritical because they will then start making excuses about why they won’t stop using those websites, which shows that they only care about “fighting” the evil of capitalism when it’s convenient (or only mildly inconvenient) for them.
