some_guy, to lemmyshitpost in Alec Baldwin charged for shooting;

How he can be tried for the duty of a prop person or the director who hired that person is beyond ludicrous. The man showed up to do a job. That job was not to keep the props safe. He was handed a tool and told it was ok to use. Fuck this system. Let him go about his life. I’m sure the trauma of having shot someone for real is enough to make him double-check for the rest of his life. That’s enough.

some_guy, to asklemmy in What's something you're proud of doing?

An unhoused woman recently asked me if I’d buy her some food at a fast food joint. I said ok because I think I have a moral obligation to help anyone who asks for food if I can afford to. She ordered the largest multi-item meal they offered (think bucket of chicken). The person ringing it up offered to do a smaller combo, but I said fuck it and let her get the largest. I figured she might have people to feed other than herself and it’s not like I couldn’t afford to let her indulge.

The reason I’m proud on this is because I changed myself into this compassionate person where once there was an angry person filled with hate. This is the product of years of therapy and deliberate self-work. I’m also proud of finally being able to love myself. That happened in 2019-2020.

My father was very high-achieving in business, so when he gave me the following piece of advice, it was truly unexpected. He told me, “if you can get away with only putting in maybe 85% and still get things done, maybe only give 85%.”

I expected some holier than thou “you must give it your all,” but he taught me to coast when I can do so and still meet expectations.

some_guy, (edited ) to asklemmy in When you AirPlay a show you're streaming to your TV, does the site send it to your Mac's VPN IP or do they get your own IP from the receiving device?

Edit: My bad. I was distracted and interpreted this as a local stream from a device in your home, like a Plex server. If you’re using a streaming service then Netflix or whoever sends through your vpn.

It’s local. Nothing is leaving your network. You would have to deliberately open a port on your router for it to get back in after going through the VPN. That’s how you can verify that it’s local.

some_guy, to asklemmy in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

We’re past the winter solstice. Take note of the sun setting a bit earlier each day. That always gives me a boost because I can look at my phone and see that condition improving. Good luck!

some_guy, to asklemmy in What's a useful mental model you've put into practice

Think of three things for which you are grateful every day. I’ve been trying to get back into this mode after I’d used it for years and fell off. Example:

  1. Got to have a nice dinner party with friends on NYE
  2. Kitty has become a lot less anxious around strangers
  3. Though it’ll rain later today, it won’t be raining when I go to work
some_guy, to asklemmy in what are your fun, low stakes new year resolutions?

When I was a teen, my older brother told me how he got trapped in a cycle of buying candles for light when his electricity was shut off. He thought, “I could pay this damn power bill if I didn’t have to buy so many candles!”

I got trapped in a similar poverty cycle years ago. I couldn’t replace broken dish-ware because I kept having to buy disposable plates for my meals. My mother bought me some cheap plates for xmas that year to break the cycle.

It’s the fallacy of the cheap boots. A rich person can buy nice boots that last ten years. A poor person has to buy cheap boots that need to be replaced every few years. In the end, the poor person spends more on boots with less to show for it.

some_guy, to asklemmy in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?

Dumb cheap acrylic pyramids with silly decorations laid into the base.
