@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Fair enough! Thanks for the time :)

I can see that being an issue for sure, what with repairability already being such a dismal thing in electronics. I kinda forget that not everyone is comfortable with opening things up as well. Just that barrier to entry is enough for plenty of people to just buy the next thing instead of repairing.

southsamurai, to asklemmy in Someone picks up a guitar at a party, what song would be hype if they played?
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Acoustic? You’d need something lively and familiar. A great option for country music is “friends in low places”. Oldies, “hound dog” can get a party bouncing. More modern pop, something like cee-lo green’s “fuck you” would work okay (there’s tabs for it, and I’ve heard it done on acoustic, and it did get a crowd going).

Electric, it’s way too open, but that’s more of a party killer because it’s just too loud for small settings and good conversation, which is what actually makes a home party fun. If you wanted loud music, you’d play stuff on a stereo rather than have one guitarist noodling and fucking around (and they will noodle and fuck around, guitarists can’t help it).

So, it’s really about the crowd, in other words. Unless the crowd is musically homogeneous, you gotta go with famous songs that cross genres because of the popularity.

southsamurai, to asklemmy in What's your opinion on all the Reddit alternatives?
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Eh. Lemmy has the biggest user base because it isn’t a single site. That makes it hard for anything else to match. Since it’s not being a single site also puts a barrier to entry, you get less idiots and low effort crap. Well, outside of the c/s where low effort crap is the point lol.

It feels the most like reddit with a lower degree of the bad parts. The differences tend to be beneficial or neutral rather than a detriment. The only real significant flaw is the early stage of development. There’s a lack of feature and tool parity that’s pretty big. Luckily, the boom in users hasn’t gone very far past where other tools will be needed, and there’s enough apps that are killing it in terms of features that make up for the lemmy development lag that it isn’t something that matters enough to make going to a more centralized site worth it.

I’m repeating a lot from other comments I’ve made, but once discovery improves, and we get a solid organization ability for our subscriptions, you won’t notice any minor differences at all. Moderation tools are weak, but they aren’t necessary yet either. There’s fewer assholes being assholey, and that’s a huge factor that requires moderation more than anything but spam and bad bots. Mostly, the bots have been squashed on the admin side, so (again) there’s no rush for mod tools like automod.

We need a flair system here pretty bad because it would make a lot of the issues with both discovery and filtration go away. Even a # system would be useful, if it wasn’t the markdown for headers.

After that, a lemmy wide search, and you’ve got everything essential from reddit that isn’t already here.

Brutal as fuck. I’ve played the song about once a day, every day since I heard it last year.

However! Vitriol has Shame and its Afterbirth that is quickly becoming just as brutally annoying to my household lol.

southsamurai, to privacy in Dropbox is sharing users' files with OpenAI, here's how to opt out
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Which is great, but still does nothing for off-site storage.

You always have at least one off site backup of anything important. For most people, that’s going to be some kind of cloud service. What you use to access that can vary a good bit (as someone reminded me, nextcloud services you can use rather than have it all be on site exist), but syncthing would require that you have someone else willing to have a device at their house, always connected, for it to be a viable pick this that aspect.

Don’t get me wrong, syncthing is awesome, but it isn’t a total solution by itself. Hell, my redundant off site backup is less hassle, tbh. I just swap out external drives when I visit my best friend. I take the most updated one, leave it and bring home the previous one from his place. It’s always a little behind, but it isn’t reliant on connectivity lol.

That’s what I was getting at. If all of your backups are at the same place, physically, you don’t actually have backups, you just have redundant copies. A backup that can be destroyed at the same time as other backups or the original isn’t really a backup at all. It’s good enough for a drive dying, but not for bigger events.

That’s what I was getting at, I just forgot that nexcloud services exist.
