takeda,

If it happens we won’t know about it for 8 minutes until it reaches us.

takeda,

I think it is changing. A few decades ago women wearing pants also weren’t acceptable.

Though I think there is a loophole. If you would put on a Scottish Kilt you probably would be ok.

takeda,

Did not exist in 2019, got it

takeda,

Out of curiosity, what will need to happen that will cause 2020 to end?

takeda,

Originally cowboy was a cattle herder that traditionally was horseback riding.

takeda,

He says that Baldwin is unlikely charged for firing the gun but more likely for being a producer who failed to ensure that the set is safe.

The thing is that he right now is being charged for firing the gun not for falling as a producer, that’s why it seems pretty weird like they are really trying to sack him for some reason.

takeda, (edited )

For someone not as familiar with Star Wars, what was Darth Vader counting to 42?

takeda, (edited )

I met a member. And he explained to me that they are pretty much atheists but from the point of the law they enjoy religious protections.

Basically if you call yourself atheist, you won’t get any religious protections, because you don’t have any religion. Everyone knows that FSM is a joke, so that wouldn’t fly either. So they created a religion. They chose Satan, to get expected reaction from devoted Christians, they don’t believe in Satan though (unlike wackos from the Church of Satan). You can read their 7 tenets, which sound quite reasonable: thesatanictemple.com/…/there-are-seven-fundamenta…

takeda,

The Church of Satan believes in the supernatural and would be the traditional satanists.

The Satan’s Temple are essentially atheists that formed a religion to enjoy the same religious protections as people in other religions.

takeda,

That’s because they don’t believe Satan or dark magic exists.

takeda,

Things that you normally don’t think about. For example if you tried to get a job and the owner refused to hire you, because you don’t believe in his religion, you can sue that they are discriminating. If you are atheist, that won’t work, because you don’t have a religion.

If a certain group claims to be offended by something, because it affects their religion, atheists have no say, because they have no religion.

There’s no tax exemptions, money that might be directed to religious institutions won’t go to atheist organizations, because again that’s not a religion and so on.

As for the other commenter’s, about putting Capitol displays and after school programs is meant to emphasize separation of church and state and religion in schools. The “abortion rituals” are for fighting recent SCOTUS ruling, that it apparently infringes their religious freedoms and prevents practicing their religion (kind of contra to Christians imposing their beliefs on others). Though, with current SCOTUS and states that are banning abortion, I don’t know if it does much.

takeda,

Home manager is the way to do it though.

The main configuration handles configuration of the system, home manager project was created to bring similar functionality for the user home directory. That’s where the name comes from.

Home manager also works great when using Nix on other systems to manage for files, for example on OS X.

takeda,

Yeah, you can if you plan well enough (typically. What I’m trying to illustrate is that this works by taking a snapshot of the disk in time. It’s like keeping a working copy of your system on your disk to be able to revert to.

While with NixOS you work with a “recipe” how your system is supposed to be configured. It is much lighter. It is declarative, you change the recipe and get what you described, you change configuration and all packages which you did not mention and are not used by anything are gone. If you update your system you can use the same configuration on it

The thing is that using can still get BTRFS or ZFS and use it to have snapshots too (for example your home directory)

takeda,

Arch? That’s so 2020. With NixOS you can just rollback if you make a mistake.

i.redd.it/tlmg36zoel671.png

I use NixOS BTW.

takeda,

BTRFS and ZFS filesystems offer lightweight snapshots. So you can save the state of the filesystem and restore it. It is often integrated with the package manager and a snapshot is involved before you make change.

NixOS works differently. You have a configuration file, and each time you make change to it NixOS rebuilds itself to its specification from scratch (you might assume it would be a lengthy process, but because of caching only things that are rebuilt are things that you are changing).

This means that things like for example squeezing from KDE to Gnome or X11 to Wayland aren’t scary to try and you can easily revert things back, your home directory won’t be touched.

Also those things aren’t exclusive you can use BTRFS and ZFS on NixOS to and enjoy their benefits.

takeda,

That’s just a snapshot. What NixOS allows you to create configuration that will deploy your OS configured the way you like, possibly post it on places like GitHub deeply a new machine confused the exact same way.

You can even do something like this: grahamc.com/blog/erase-your-darlings/

Amazon clearly lying about "ownership" on Prime. (lemmy.world)

You all remember just a few weeks ago when Sony ripped away a bunch of movies and TV shows people “owned”? This ad is on Amazon. You can’t “own” it on Prime. You can just access it until they lose the license. How can they get away with lying like this?

takeda,

I wonder if that would hold in court. They could simply use “rent” or “lease” in their ads, but they purposely are trying to mislead to imply permanence.

takeda,

Those are more to punish companies and change their behavior, which I think is what was desired here.

Of course they are a gold mine if you are a lawyer.

takeda,

That sounds more like what class action lawsuit is supposed to be for.

takeda, (edited )

I was mocking too, but things changed when a phone became the device to play back videos. At this point the orientation didn’t matter as much.

It got to the point that some services, like YouTube shorts pretty much mandate vertical orientation.

takeda,

Then deinvest?

What a fucking argument. “Yes, it is a problem, but it is too hard for me to do anything about it, someone else should fix it”

takeda,

He did all of that with a bow, imagine him with a sniper rifle…

takeda,

So in the description you said edit, but here you say read (syllabus). If just reading is the requirement, there was a word reader, not sure if it is still available. I also believe once subscription expires, you still will be able to view, just edit.

Also what’s wrong with your school requiring word document and not providing a free license for the software? My college at least provided free license during my class.

As other alternatives I don’t have better than libre office (at the time I was using, libre office didn’t exist and I used OpenOffice, I still was using it, primarily, because of using Linux on my laptop) and submitted my work as PDF and didn’t have problems, but my class were requirements in computer science so I’m sure I wasn’t the only one doing it.
