tburkhol,

I have a ‘roll-your-own’ using an adafruit SCD-30 module www.adafruit.com/product/4867 IR-based CO2, temp & humidity; I2C with python libraries, so integrating it with an RPi is easy. Sensor is self-calibrating over time, so if you leave it in a higher CO2 space with no exposure to fresh air, it will eventually drift such that the lowest observed CO2 reports as 420 ppm. Newer SCD-40 is only $45, but different sensor technology.

Dunno about their shipping outside the US.

tburkhol,

Spiteful comedy feels good as long as it punches up. Not necessarily funny, but schadenfreude, cathartic, or just relief seeing them ‘get taken down a peg.’ It invites controversy when the artist and the audience disagree on the power structure. Chappellle falls apart around transgender, because he thinks he’s punching up to that group, where I imagine most people believe that trans are close to the bottom of the oppression spectrum. Chappelle’s argument basically being something like, “Well, they can ‘pass’ if they just match gender presentation to biological sex, and a lot of them are white.,” but having to hide your membership in a group is the opposite of power.

What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

I am super sick right now and haven’t eaten much in a few days. It’s getting to the point where I am gonna need to force myself to eat something to keep my strength up but everything just sounds terrible to me right now. I have been subsisting mostly on small glasses of milk and the occasional packet of instant oatmeal....

tburkhol,

Nuts are super nutrient-dense. Just a handful gets you a decent amount of calories & protein. You can crush some up and mix with your oatmeal if they’re too much to chew.

tburkhol,

Some people will refuse to pull the lever to divert the trolley from killing 10 people, because pulling the lever kills 1.

tburkhol,

The popular press report says that washing doesn’t make a difference. The actual, paywalled study says they did find a highly significant interaction between washing and type of rice, which is a level of statistical sophistication that a food writer might not grasp. In fact, even the scientific authors seem not to have commented much on the interaction.

In their data, it looks like washing 0-amylose glutinous rice makes it more sticky, while washing medium-grain 21% amylose rice even just 3 times makes it less sticky, and that 13% amylose Jasmine rice is just kind of all over the place or not systematically influenced by washing. They didn’t do a big table of adjusted post hocs, so it’s difficult to tell which specific groups are different from which others.

They also cooked the rices differently, using 1:1.3 rice:water for the glutinous and 1:1.6 for the medium and Jasmine, which obviously might confound their observations.

tburkhol,

Argument goes that the easily removed starch is all very short chain polymers, where the stickyness is more due to medium chain and highly branched molecules. I would honestly not be surprised if some of the cloudy water was also talc or other inorganic anti-clumping agents.

The type of rice you’re cooking is also very important.

tburkhol,

Quaint rhyme from better times. Boss is making $34 for my dime today.

tburkhol,

I was just googling around, and it looks to me like a private rail car costs something like a 2nd home, storage fees similar to property tax, $4/mile to have Amtrak haul you around. Basically a vacation home, but mobile. Definitely a 1% thing, but not billionaires-only. Probably way more prestige in saying you’ve got a private rail car than a beach house. At least among a certain segment.

Most interesting thing I’ve learned all week.

tburkhol,

My brand of humanism forbids me from interacting with liars and proponents of bad faith. aka: don't feed the trolls. Christians citing the bible in bad faith; right wing nut-jobs citing the constitution in bad faith; SCOTUS citing religious persecution or reverse racism in bad faith..

tburkhol,

Plot twist: John Oliver is secretly a mod of r/pics.
