What’s your problem with Poettering? I really don’t get it. You don’t want to use his projects? Then don’t use them. But don’t be angry at a person who made the Linux desktop NOT a mess. Everyone I’ve ever talked to agrees that the days before systemd were a mess.

I would also add Brodie to the list, and I follow 7 of them. I have kinda tried to steer clear of DT because I’m not a fan of some of his off-topic videos. There are 2 I don’t follow: Veronica Explains (I was going to check her channel out, but forgot) and Gardiner Bryant (this is literally the first time I’m seeing or hearing about this guy, so I will go check him out)

Okay then. Surely you can ask for help (and receive it) without being rude to, and about the accomplishments of, developers that have made the Linux desktop accessible enough for regular folks to use.

Hahaha, I wrote a paper on the early history of M$ and the Gary Killdall story, where Gates bought QDOS (the quick and dirty operating system) to offer to IBM, after sending IBM to Killdall (so IBM can get CP/M from Killdall) but after IBM came back to Gates empty-handed (cuz Killdall was out having fun, missing the opportunity of a lifetime) Gates offered that Microsoft could do the OS for IBM so M$ bought QDOS, did some changes in branding (and other tweaks) and then got it packaged for IBM’s new computers. If I recall correctly, Killdall threatened to sue, and afterwards, there was a CP/M version offered alongside the MS-DOS version. However, the MSDOS version was like $10-$20 while CP/M was in the hundreds of dollars on top of the computer itself. So Microsoft won.

BUT this was NOT the beginning of M$. They started with BASIC interpreters for Altair when Gates and Allen were at Harvard.

If Poettering is an idiot, why are you using a systemd distro? Go use Devuan, Artix, Alpine, or Void.

For a spare phone if you want to just tinker and have fun, go ahead. For a main devicez just. Don’t. It is very very alpha quality software.

That’s basically THE dealbreaker for snaps. Loop devices on lsblk? Most people don’t care and wouldn’t see it. Proprietary backend? Again, most regular people (Ubuntu’s target audience) do not care. So the slow startup time is THE dealbreaker.

Interesting fact: I use Ublock on Girefox and have never seen the YouTube message about being limited to 3 videos. Maybe it’s not a thing in the UK yet? I’m not sure, but all I know is I’ve had 0 issues with adblock on YT.

Also I’m not sure about slow startup times. Are those still an issue? If so, then I would be sure to considet Ubuntu dead and not only not recommend it but actively recommend switching away from it.

theshatterstone54, to piracy in Do you donate to FOSS projects?

I was going to but I forgot, until recently, so I made a donation to a project that is essential to my workflow, that being Qtile, a window manager and Wayland compositor that is just amazing, has an incredible built-in bar, and very low resource usage, especially on the Wayland backend, and it keeps on getting better and closer to perfect, so my donation was to support the further development of the project and to express my gratitude for its existence.

Wait, so that’s a proper *NIX system? A non-linux system? That’s quite impressive!

Janky setups, or functional setups? For Janky setups, sync manually. For functional setups, I’d suggest hosting your own Nextcloud instance and using it to sync your music library throughout your devices.

Okay, I get it now. So transactional is in regards to reproducible builds (like the config file approach taken by NixOS and Guix)

So are you talking about, like NixOS and Guix, where they are based on a paclage manager?
