user224, (edited ) to asklemmy in What are some works/resources that helped make something difficult/unclear finally click for you?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Often the best explanations on things like electronics are in old unclassified training films you may find on archive.org and YouTube. Those have been pretty useful.

user224, to asklemmy in What is your earliest memory?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I have a few memories that could be it, but they have no timestamps. I don’t know how early they are. Could be me sitting on potty in living room in the doorway, looking at TV where my dad was reading something on Telext of channel 1 (recognizable by the orange bar on top).

user224, to linux in I use linux for the same reason I wear fuzzy socks and sweaters
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

True. But as I found out, the ISO file needs to be stored on a partition formatted with NTFS for that to work.

Why did this not come to my head. My idea was to use video capture card, connect that to another computer or phone, set screens to mirror and then take snapshot of the video.

Work harder, not smarter.

This would also create issue with certificates.

@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The most I got at once was around 21 I think. But twice I did such number without passing.

I should finally look at one of those automated captcha solver extensions for Firefox. I know some are more accurate than humans anyway.

user224, to asklemmy in What is the name of your cleaning robot?

I don’t have any, but if it had that laser thing on top, I’d call it Geoff, referencing the DIY electric car from top gear

user224, to asklemmy in Anyone else do "last chance socks"?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

No, I am 17 which means I still have to live with parents and among other issues my mom doesn’t allow me to have access to my clothes. So, if I want some, I have to ask. In the end, I can get fresh underwear daily, but the rest only weekly, which isn’t exactly optimal.

Oh, and we don’t have a functional washing machine for years, so it’s not like I could just keep some of my clothes away from her.

user224, to lemmyshitpost in You know how bad it needs to be to be ignored for over 2 decades!

No, no, it can only be 1997, logically.

The Y2038 problem.

user224, to asklemmy in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I currently have a printer, also HP, but an old one (20 years).

When I’ll finally need a new printer, I’ll be deciding between HP and Brother. I am not sure about Linux support with Brother printers. I heard it’s great, but I need to search more. I know HPLIP works well, but I also heard these new HP printers don’t last long. Then there’s also the thing called HP+ (not to be confused with Instant Ink) that many of those printers have, which REQUIRES HP account AND a connection to internet.

user224, to linux in New Linux user here. Is this really how I'm supposed to install apps on Linux?
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Usually the *-bin version just means it downloads the already compiled binaries instead of compiling the program on your computer.

You should also always check the PKGBUILD for something suspicious. AUR packages are put there by users, and are not verified.

Just saying.

Your words struck a chord with me, and I find myself nodding in agreement. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you’ve said. It’s refreshing to hear such a clear and well-articulated take on “this”. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
