Be sure to avoid “remux” quality. I didn’t know what this meant at first - it’s a file with no compression an uncompressed 1:1 copy of the source, so even “low-resolution” video files can be truly massive. A 1080p movie should be between 2GB-10GB or so; I’ve found that remuxes are typically 15GB-50GB, or even larger.

edit: updated for accuracy 👍

voracitude,

“Remuxing preserves the original video and audio quality because it doesn’t involve any compression”

techreviewadvisor.com/what-does-remux-mean/

So, what you said - it’s a 1:1 copy of the source. With no compression. Which is what I said, as far as I can tell?

What I don’t understand is why the article says it allows for smaller file sizes, when I’ve found without fail that remuxes are the largest variety by far. It made sense to me that a file produced without compression would be larger than the same file, compressed.

voracitude,

I thought for sure this was an Alestorm song, at first. Now I’ll be listening to pirate metal all day 😋

voracitude,

Less so, lately.

voracitude,

This is the question. “It tastes like the forest: still, slightly sweet air, golden sunlight filtered through emerald leaves, a crystal brook babbling just out of sight” versus “It tastes like the forest. Dirt, rotting undergrowth, and animal shit”.

voracitude,

Thank you, that’s very kind! However as you can see, half my work isn’t even worth quoting 😋

From a technical POV, have the Armed Forces drop depth charges on those cables where they cross our borders. Sure there would be legal challenges, but the damage would already be done, probably for years based on how prosecuting him for January 6th has gone.

Ordering Amazon to turn off their servers (or more likely block all but government-approved connections) would result in about 70% of the internet going offline, even without cutting the cables. This can be accomplished with emergency powers.

Poison or shut down US-based root DNS servers; also accomplishable with emergency powers, but the easiest to route around.

Yes, this would all be a phenomenally stupid idea. New York City alone lost ten billion dollars per day while they were offline from Sandy. My job - hell, the entire company I work for - would evaporate instantly with no internet, and so would the livelihoods of most Americans. But this fucking guy doesn’t care about any of that. Don’t think the law will get in his way, don’t think fear for the country’s future will stop him. If the rest of the government allows him to be a candidate and he gets elected, despite the Fourteenth Amendment, the US is toast.

In my area, a rotisserie chicken is $10 now, but it’s still $5 at Costco.

The thing is, “significant” in this case is subjective. I perfectly understand why it wouldn’t be worth it for some people.

Friend, if there’s cameras, there’s a record, and that means that if someone notices they’ll have video proof of theft. That would cost your job.

And if you’re working for a small business, please don’t steal from the owner. Small businesses are not big faceless money-extraction machines like corporations are.

That might actually be an element of a workable argument in Court. I think it’s a very clever reframing of the precedent that allows recordings of broadcast media.

Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

I have come across a lot’s of people like these. like 99% of them. Sometimes it makes me think twice if what i am saying is wrong? What’s wrong with them. Is it so hard to swallow your pride and acknowledge that the other person is speaking facts? When they come to know they are wrong they proceed to insult/make fun of...

voracitude, (edited )

Ah, young grasshopper. You are now discovering the ways of the world. It is not enough simply to be right; one must be cool about it, too. Which unfortunately means not getting pissed off that the other person is talking bullshit, because that only makes whoever you’re talking to double down, no matter how pants-on-head their point is.

As to what is wrong with them and why: pride, and embarrassment.

It’s a cliche and also very hard advice to follow, but it’s true that the best thing to do is smile and walk away. Know that they know you know they’re wrong and an idiot, and take comfort in it.

Edit: It’s very hard. I struggle with it every day, including yesterday, and today. Just gotta keep trying, we’ll get it eventually, right?

voracitude,

What possible reason could there be for leaving food you intend to eat unattended in public? Do you do that often? Where do you live that you can trust it wouldn’t be taken or otherwise fucked with in that time?

Proton Mail CEO Calls New Address Verification Feature 'Blockchain in a Very Pure Form' (tech.slashdot.org)

Proton Mail, the leading privacy-focused email service, is making its first foray into blockchain technology with Key Transparency, which will allow users to verify email addresses. From a report: In an interview with Fortune, CEO and founder Andy Yen made clear that although the new feature uses blockchain, the key technology...

voracitude,

This is basically like Domain Keys-Identified Mail (DKIM) but for a specific email address, without needing to own a domain to set it up. I’m gonna call it “P(ersonal)KIM” for short.

If this is implemented correctly it’ll be a few clicks to set up and then just work in the background to make it harder to impersonate you via email, even if you have a free email address.

Am I running the risk of getting my Google account banned for logging into the Aurora Store or a custom rom like GrapheneOS?

I guess there is no need to introduce what a Degoogled phone is (or a custom ROM without google services, like GrapheneOS is) and the Aurora Store is basically said in a crude way the Google Playstore but without the need to log in to your Google account, quite useful in my opinion....

voracitude,

I’m running GrapheneOS and if Google locks me out of my device, which I bought from them, they’re going to buy me a new apartment :P

Jokes aside, anyone running grapheneOS that gets their Google account banned should DM me. That’s solid grounds for a lawsuit.

voracitude,

And this is why - all together now - “An IP is not an ID”. They don’t know what you’ve downloaded; they know what some number of IP addresses have downloaded from some trackers at some points, and you might be have been assigned one of those IPs after the fact. They aren’t useful, alone.
