westyvw, (edited ) to linux in New systemd update will bring Windows’ infamous Blue Screen of Death to Linux | Ars Technica

What a sensational, over blown article. ArsTechnica this is shitty journalism and you should know it.

The headline would be about as correct if it said “SystemD update will bring Amiga’s Guru Meditation screen to Linux.”

This update has nothing to do with Windows. Error displays with additional information about the crash is not exclusive to windows, nor new. In fact a Kernel Panic screen happened in Unix.

Waluigis_Talking_Buttplug,

The majority of linux articles have me checking the comments first to see if someone talks about ridiculous click bait crap, honestly saved me a lot of time.

muhyb,

I was sick of Reddit’s clickbait titles. It’s sad to see they moved here as well.

Waluigis_Talking_Buttplug,

To be fair, it’s the articles themselves

muhyb,

I suppose that’s the main problem, I didn’t check the article since the title reeks clickbaity enough. However I wouldn’t share an article if the the title obviously is a clickbait, I’m sure there are bunch of respectable sources about this development.

mex,

To be fair, it is called a BSOD, which is a term widely associated with Windows.

Hello I am writing the firmware for MotherBoard 2021, a definitely completely different product than MotherBoard 2020, I am going to ship in in 2 weeks for Christmas, and I am going to write an image decoder on top of bare metal, and it is “not” going to let you hack the pants off the computer.

Said no one ever.

@KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

The problem that could occur is: Right now Microsoft doesn’t care about Linux or competitors, every OEM has to buy a Windows key anyways regardless. If SteamOS actually becomes a shippable option, Microsoft’s cavalier attitude is going to change quickly, and a lot sooner than it will take them to get an Xbox Handheld out the door.

lyam23,
@lyam23@beehaw.org avatar

I don’t understand how that’s a problem. Can you go into a little bit more detail about what you think the consequences might be to manufacturers choosing to use Steam OS or some other Linux operating system on their handheld devices?

They’re not just capitalists, they’re oligarchs. They feel entitled to that private information and they don’t care how much “campaign contributions” they have to give to get what they want.

Chriswild,

Not to be that guy but capitalists and oligarchs are basically the same thing given enough time. As soon as people have capital they have more power and with more power comes influence.

It's rare that I get to feel anything remotely comforting about not being able to afford new hardware, but if I understand correctly, my BIOS-only dinosaur can't be exploited.

Still vulnerable to thousands of other exploits no doubt, but not this one.

aelwero, to fuck_cars in Higher Vehicle Hoods Increase Pedestrian Deaths

Gotta have more real estate for factory lights… Starting to see trucks with eight lights on the front going down down the road.

The ironic part is that the high beams usually disable all the aux lights, so if you see a newer truck with only two lights, it’s probably got the high beams on, and if they turn it back to low beams to be “courteous”, it turns on all the others and ends up being worse than if they’d just left the fucking high beams on.

I don’t really give a shit about the penile compensation aspect of “muh bigguh truck”, but fuck your wall of lights…

Man, I drive a truck, 500 a month, will be paid off in less than 2 years, I get a lot of utility out of it and I got it from my brother who put some nice tires on it

But I also hate it because it’s so fuckin big, and I hate that people might think I’m a truck freak, but it’s just my only good option right now

aelwero,

I got a little jeep renegade that runs me like 350 a month…

First time I put gas in it and realized it had a 12 gallon tank, I was all like “OMG, why?!?”. Then I drove 300 miles before the light came on and It made perfect sense :)

Full tank doesn’t even get halfway to the $100 mark where you gotta reset the pump to fill it the rest of the way, ya know?

500 a month could treat you a lot better at the gas pump.

@HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

The article didn’t mention this, but would disabling the UEFI logo in the boot screen mitigate the vulnerability until proper patches get rolled out? (Or honestly at this point, I’d keep it disabled even after it’s patched in case they didn’t patch it right. UEFI’s are all proprietary so it’s not like you can check.) Since the vulnerability is in the image parser, would bypassing that be enough?

Do they even let you disable it?

As much as I love my steam deck and the os, I do wish it was slightly easier to install third party games.

I know it’s not hard and I’ve installed plenty, but like it’s so incredibly easy with steam that it’s made me lazy to even install games I already have on gog

Jjcool27,

It’s actually pretty easy with lutris and bottles. The same process that I do on my arch machine works on the decks desktop mode.

natsume_shokogami,

It’s not Linux or SteamOS, but both Epic and CD Projekt don’t support their store client apps and launchers on Linux sadly, such we have to use unofficial ones such as Heroic Game Launcher

AVengefulAxolotl,

But gotta admit, its a damn good launcher! If i had to use windows again, I would install it instead of the other two for sure!

Steve Huffman thought his bank account should be like Zuck and Musk’s because he also ran a social media site. Took advice from Musk, who just wasted 44 billion dollars and had ZERO experience with social media, then turned Reddit into an actual pile of garbage just like that.

What an actual failure of a human lmao

It’s so absurd: On paper Huffman has managed a social media platform much, much longer than Musk, but somehow he is so ignorant that he looks to Musk to tell him what to do with it.
