Teknikal, to piracy in Film studios demand IP addresses of people who discussed piracy on Reddit

I’ve noticed reddit has recently started shadowbanning my posts when I have a vpn active so I’d say at this point it’s probably completely unsafe to discuss anything on.

13617,

Absolutely. That and the recent vpn blocking changes has made using reddit absolutely unbearable.

Since he doesn’t mention it in his ‘fantastic’ reporting, OpenSSH 9.6 was released Monday that will patch this attack.

I am tempted to delete this post just for the article’s stupid clickbait headline, but it still will probably cause some people to go update their OpenSSH installs, so… meh.

Anyone who actually wants to know details of the vulnerability should read the website about it which is obviously much better than this article.

Also, since he doesn’t mention it, if on the Internet, the MITM would have to be installed at both end points (client side and server side) to be effective without the patch.

Huh? No. The attacker doesn’t need to be in two places or even near either end per se, they could be located at any fully on-path position between the client and server.

spaphy,

It’s better that you guys discuss it in the comments and the click bait effectively makes me click the comments so it all worked out; thanks all.

henfredemars,

Man that place. I know it’s cliche to talk about it like talking about your ex on a date, but I posted there for good reason.

I found the solution to a rare bug that was bothering a group of people. I posted the solution, and my account was immediately banned sitewide for violating the terms of service, whatever that means.

I thought to myself: yeah… it was a mistake coming here. Leave it to the bots to have conversations with themselves.

yokonzo,

What was the bug out of curiosity

henfredemars, (edited )

It was a solution to a Lutris bug. Basically, flatpak containers can use these things called portals to gain access to specific files and directories via a file chooser rather than broad access or manually assigned access.

In this case, my wine installation was crashing because some part of it was trying to obtain a lock on a directory object, which is an unsupported feature when accessing a directory through a portal. The error message is something completely unrelated like can’t draw window with a string of hex values. It took me a few hours to track down the real root cause.

Oh well. Works on my machine. Also, there’s a fix on the development branch now. I made a write-up, posted it, and it’s all gone. I should have known better honestly. It works great for some people but anybody can arbitrarily receive unfair treatment with no recourse at any time. I’m satisfied knowing that eventually the fix will get out to everybody eventually. It’s just a shame I couldn’t leave a signpost behind.

yokonzo,

Oof that sucks, well good to know it’s fixed and life moves on

These companies are just mad that their movies sucked and didn’t make any money, so they’re saying they’re losing profit from piracy… what profit?!?! And if they are, then I feel like having to watch any fragment of that movie is punishment enough.

Honestly, I don’t see a problem with pirating a movie that came out 5+ years ago. After a movie has left cinemas and can only be seen via DVD/blueray are the studios really making much money back from those? They’re definitely not making any money on DVDs/bluerays bought from secondhand stores.

space,

And why the hell would I buy a region locked Blu-ray, and be forced to watch through those FBI piracy screens?

Womble,

No, how was I supposed to infer that you were fine with non-commercial AI from your two letter response to why you were licencing your comment?

I think its fairly naive to think that linking to a licence will do anything to stop commercial AI but not open ones, but you go for it if you think it’s worthwhile.

A couple of people that drive massive vehicles they don’t need like Escalades have told me (former practicing psychologist) over the years that they know they are bad drivers, but they want to drive a tank so they can walk away from whatever accidents they know they’ll cause.

Because practicing and improving their driving skills is apparently not on the table. The lack of empathy is unsettling. They don’t care who they kill, they just don’t want to be inconvenienced.

Usually the affluent spouse type.

I think this shows some of the bigger issues in car centric design. Even if you don’t like driving, aren’t good at it, or aren’t comfortable with it, you often have to do it anyway beceause there are no viable alternatives.

trynn, to RedditMigration in Op-ed: Why the great #TwitterMigration didn’t quite pan out
@trynn@kbin.social avatar

This article kind of misses the forest for the trees. While I agree with many of the author's points, that's not why the failed. It failed because Twitter/Mastodon isn't really a social networking site, and Mastodon didn't provide the same service that Twitter does. At its core, Twitter is about small numbers of (usually famous or important) users communicating with large audiences of followers. failed because not enough of those famous and important people moved from Twitter to Mastodon, so the average user had no content they cared to read. Seeing posts from your friends about what they had for dinner last night is all well and good, but the stuff people actually want to see is famous person A throwing shade at famous person B while famous person C talks about the new movie they're in and important organization D posts a warning about severe weather in the area. You don't go to Twitter to have discussions, you go to Twitter to get news and gossip direct from the source.

In contrast, sites like Reddit and kBin/Lemmy are about having group conversations around a topic. Interacting with famous people is neat but not the point. Think of Reddit/kBin/Lemmy as random conversations at a party whereas Twitter/Mastodon is some random person on the corner shouting to a crowd from a soapbox. has a much better chance of succeeding simply because the purpose of the site is different. As long as enough people move to kBin/Lemmy to have meaningful conversations (aka content), it will have succeeded.

kimagure,

not enough of those famous and important people moved from Twitter to Mastodon

This is the reason I'm still using Twitter. I use Twitter not to tweet about what I did, but to get news from people I follow.
Tech people can move to Mastodon because their circles are moving, but not with common people.
For me, personally, Mastodon is like empty void. No one to follow and I can't interact with people who share same interests because they only exist on Twitter (since the "famous people" isn't moving from Twitter)

Machinist3359,

Wait until Meta joins the microblogiverse gunning for those VIP accounts eager too leave Twitter.

Ertebolle,

The famous people did move over for certain specific groups; app developers are pretty much all on Mastodon now, the WWDC chatter / visionOS experimentation / etc is way more active on there than on Twitter. (Of course if any group ought to be uniquely pissed off at both Twitter and Reddit, it’s app developers)

lunarul,

Reddit migration will succeed for some communities and fail for others. Generic subs can live on with new mods and new subscribers. They're not much different from FB or Twitter. Just mindless content to feed that infinite scroll.

Specialized subs where the community as a whole (or a majority at least) decides to move to a new home will move (or have moved already), because for those the community is what matters, not the venue.

princessofcute,
@princessofcute@kbin.social avatar

%100 this. I have Mastodon and use it sparingly because I found a good community but I still find myself going back to Twitter because most of the people I follow on Twitter haven't moved and most of the people I follow on Twitter are celebrities or influencers. The only way a will work is if most of the influencers and celebrities move off the platform as that's the content most regular users go for. With Reddit however we just need people that create good content to move, the lurkers will follow the content regardless of how "complicated" the platform is. The reddit lurkers won't stay on Reddit if there isn't any quality content being posted there, they may be satiated with reposts for a while but eventually they will leave and go looking for the content and if that content is on Kbin/Lemmy they will come here.

HiddenLayer5, (edited ) to linux in Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack
@HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve never been a fan of the UEFI logo inserting itself into the boot screen. It’s basically just an advertisement for the hardware vendor because they’re jealous of the OS having the spotlight. And it’s an ad that, like so many other ads before it, screws over the security and privacy of the advertisee because fuck you that’s why.

ddkman,

I don’t know. It looks more aesthetically consistent. Your computer has to display something. Average users would be scared if it dumped logs on the display. so the vendor logo makes sense. It COULD just say loading, but this is a bit pedantic I think.

azertyfun,

??

With BIOS, it goes “Motherboard Logo -> OS Logo”

With UEFI, it goes “Motherboard Logo -> Motherboard Logo”

Sure, it’s more consistent, but the alternative is not user unfriendly, the only people it’s unfriendly to is the marketing wankers at Dell, Lenovo, Acer, etc.

nik282000,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

When it comes to security, particularly at boot time, fuck the user. Users don’t interact with devices at boot time so it doesn’t matter if it shows a blank screen, a mile of logs or a screaming clown penis. If it was up to users no device or service would have a password or security of any kind, and every byte of information about your life would be owned by 'The Cloud." Let the marketing wanks insert their logo into the Windows boot process,

People who use those characters benefit from it. I imagine 點看 is more useful than xn–c1yn36f to a Chinese person. That’s also why Google displays them that way.

It would be nice if browsers warned when International Domain Names were in use, and provided the option to disable punycode when first encountered.

9point6,

This is the big thing that should be happening, even just a little icon in the bar when it’s happening to switch between the two representations.

Yes, because the internet is not restricted to English letters.

Just imagine you had to visit アップル instead of apple.com! And most importantly, would you trust yourself to see the difference that and say プッアル consistently without seeing the real reference?

Just to be clear, I hate it when the browsers hides part of the url too. Show me the https god damn! But internationalization is a good thing, as it makes the internet accessible to more people.
