This is the kicker. They are a pretty good solution now, but they could be amazing.
At least in my country they need to hammer out a consistent set of rules and laws regarding their use. Last time I checked the vast majority of them are effectively illegal because under current laws they are too powerful to be considered an assisted pushbike, you cant register them as a roadgoing vehicle because they dont have indicators and brake lights and you cant ride them on the footpath because riding on the footpath is against the law.
Which puts them in that lovely legal space of “Does a cop want to fuck with me today?” Fortunately our police tend to be pretty cool on the subject because they know that technically taking it out of your house is illegal which is dumb.

Also, unironically, e-bikes are more fun than cars. You feel the acceleration much more on a bike than a car despite moving slower, and the breeze going by you feels pretty nice too.

Earlier this week, I had to catch a bus and go to a clinic to get my blood work done. Plenty of coughing and sneezing people in both places, and other than the office workers, I was the only one wearing a mask.
While it really does feel like it, as a person working in healthcare, I do see some change after the whole shitstorm from recent years.
There are people who actually wear a mask, few, but they are around.
A lot more people seem to be conscious of spreading their illness to other people be it a cold or COVID.
People definitely wash their hands more often. I know we do.
Some people started getting their annual shots when they didn’t intend to before.
Local businesses open their windows and doors a lot more than they used to.
But also I also see some negative tendencies:
Interest in flu shots has waned. That might have something to do with the govt introducing a free flu shot programme from your GP if you’re above 65 or with specific conditions (which is a great thing) But I definitely see a lot more vaxx-scepticism and fear of combining both shots (infant vaccination plans are a lot more intense and the vast majority are fine).
People politicising a disease.
This is country specific but food supplement companies aggressively promoting “immune system stimulants” to the point where in the beginning of The Plague™ they somehow managed to include them in hospital treatment plans.
This came out longer than intended but there were some things that I needed to get out of my system.
I’m glad there are positive changes, and obviously those are most effective in healthcare situations.
However, from my personal experience as a university student in Canada, everything is the same if not worse than before. Hand sanitizer stations have been removed or simply not refilled, people straight up refuse to wear masks even when they’re sick. A week or two ago in class, I saw many people literally sneeze into their hands and then wipe the snot on their chairs (and these are supposed to be engineering students!). There is still no ventilation or even filtration in any of our classrooms.
Not only is personal protective equipment not used by almost anyone, its use is actively stigmatized by many, including professors at school. To me this is completely ridiculous, but unfortunately reality.
This was the first thing I assumed would happen when they announced the API pricing. A lot of spam prevention and deletion is done by bots that use the API, made by people that likely can’t pay the new exorbitant fees to keep those going.
Most bots actually would continue working, the free API allows for 100 requests a minute which for most is enough, and they have been manually adding exemptions for moderation bots that need more. The question is if the creators are willing to continue supporting them, for free, in the future. Plenty understandably do not.
Also currently being a moderator (of any subreddit) allows you to bypass both the the rate limit and NSFW sub ban - which itself seems to be a manual list of mostly porn subs, as most of the subs that are nsfw as a protest still work so it isn't a blanket ban.
@JohnEdwa The bots should not even hit the limit, otherwise its a hint for any anti-bot detection. Just create lot of small bots staying low on threshold to be detected. Together with an AI, then the missing bot detection utility and some missing moderators, Reddit should become a bigger pile than it is already.
For those of you who think you are using a local pharmacy, you might want to check whether or not they're owned by one of these. They buy out local pharmacies without obviously rebranding. And then they kill the store. At least, that's Rite Aid's MO.
That’s a good question that I don’t have an answer to as I have no legal training. I’m assuming if you can sign a contract online where the legal text is behind a link and the main offer is what you see… maybe? Technically, it wouldn’t be too difficult to simply erase any mention of a license in a pre-cleaning phase of the data, but I don’t know if the act itself would be an even bigger indication of guilt. There would be no excuse like “oops, I just copied this data into my training set, teehee”. But as I said, not a legal expert.
If there are copyright experts that want to weigh in, I’d be interested to hear their opinion. Given that there are running, unanswered cases (most notably again Microsoft’s Copilot), and Japan on the verge of drafting into law that AI training data can ignore copyright, it’s possible even legal experts would have a hard time answer the question.
I’m putting them here just in case. Only costs me a line carriage and a Ctrl+V.

Seeing that you have done that made me start to think about doing it myself, as I definitely feel there are days when I’m being shadowed by AI training mechanisms.
But if it doesn’t make any difference legally as a deterrent, then I wouldn’t bother.
Even if it’s ruled illegal in the US, there’s nothing stopping AI companies from moving their operations to Japan where copyright doesn’t apply to training data.
What the person using those links does not realize is that a Creative Commons license relaxes restrictions rather than imposing additional ones.
Everything you create is already protected by copyright by default. If you publish an essay and don’t append any license to it, nobody may republish or remix that essay without your permission, unless an exception like fair use applies. The exact restrictions will depend on local laws.
By using a Creative Commons license, you choose to forgo some of those copyright protections. Thus the comments of the person you replied to are actually less protected than yours or mine.
They already know who I am lol. I don’t hide it at all, straight raw dogging it without VPN or anything. Thankfully they can’t do anything because they would lose money pursuing me.
They have failed one of their code jobs: validating advertisements are legitimate. I don't know why any legitimate company would advertise with google as you get associated with the scams they allow on their ad platform.
