Pessimists know the “rebound effect”: improvement in efficiency leads us to do more of the thing. More illumination for example. This (partially) counteracts the good effects.

Cryophilia,

The more powerful computers get, the more bloated software gets.

mdd,

The lower operating costs of LEDs allows people/organizations/govt to leave the lights on longer or all night at a reduce costs compared to filament bulbs.

This is often to the detriment of migratory birds.

Wtf, how can a post in a piracy group be a link to a site that won’t let you read an article unless you subscribe or create an account…?!

Zuberi,
@Zuberi@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The same way I haven’t seen an ad in years, I also use a paywall bypass extension.

So I guess it skips my mind sometimes; when none of these sites have had paywalls for years.

I would argue a good chunk of the people here would prefer the OG link so they can archive it themselves (or make an offline .html copy directly)

ziixe,

Could you possibly share the extension? Asking for a friend

hypoproteinosis96,

I am 100% unaffiliated w/ OP, but I would guess they use Magnolia’s bypass.

However; I am on v3.0.8.0 (2023-03-05), so I can’t speak for anything newer than that out of his/her repo or in the extension mentioned.

A fun reminder: always read what your extensions can do before yolo-clicking a download by a burner account.

JokeDeity,

I just spent like an hour trying several methods to install this on Android, sadly I was not successful. If anyone can inform me on how to install this on Firefox for Android (not a fork), please let me know.

Firefox does not support all extensions on Android yet. But should be soon I think.

Does this extension work on android version of Firefox, and can you share it? Thx

Both the Israeli government and Hamas are wrong and bad. The Israeli people and Palestinians are both indigenous to the land they share, and both have the right to live there. The median age of Palestine is under 20, the people many people in this thread are justifying the genocide of are majority children, because their parents have been killed by the Israel government in an apartheid state. The solution Netanyahu will take will be genocide of Palestinian people, when Hamas is to blame.

I don’t want to have five different streaming services that cost twice what cable used to cost, and is way more inconvenient trying to figure out which platform has what. Streaming can get fucked!

AncientFutureNow, to upliftingnews in Because of innovations in LED technology, the amount of electricity used for lighting is down drastically

I thought this was common knowledge. It’s placard all over all the packaging. “Only 8w! 60w equivalent!!”

bobzilla,

It’s adorable that you think that the average person has any idea how wattage relates to electricity usage. (Or even that the “w” in 8w is watts.)

AncientFutureNow,

It’s literally written on the front of the package.

Thanks for the condescending message. Don’t have a nice day.

khalic,

So, they should accept the massacre and feel bad about themselves?

cupcakezealot,
@cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

they shouldn’t respond to an attack by killing innocent civilians also they’ve been brutally dehumanitizing and terrorising Palestinians in Gaza for years

khalic,

The deliberate targeting of civilians is horrible. But it’s well documented that hamas uses people as meat shields, by using civilian buildings as ammo depots and rocket launching platforms. That’s, unfortunately, a fair target then…

cupcakezealot, (edited )
@cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

gaza is literally a small territory surrounded by water and israel where do you think people would be that aren’t targets for missles that level entire city blocks?

khalic,

Israel definitely could have avoided this, and not fuck up the whole situation so much, but it’s not a simple matter… and self defense is a simple matter… if someone shoots at you, you kill them. That’s what happens when you take a gun. If you massacre a bunch of civilians, then people are going to shoot at you and your accomplices with passion

cupcakezealot,
@cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

but then doesn’t that mean palestinians have a right to self defence?

khalic,

Military targets yes, if there is a missile launcher or ammo in an israeli building, yes it is a valid target. You have to right to kill anyone who’s actively trying kill you.

hyperhopper, (edited ) to fuck_cars in Hoboken, NJ reduces annual traffic deaths to zero

The bike lanes suck though. They are next to the street, instead of behind the parking and next to the sidewalk. As a result, on the main street in Hoboken (Washington street), there are always cars double parked in the bike lane during the day or drinking hours of the night, because parking in that city is horrendous. It’s common to see an entire block or two full of cars double parked in the bike lane, making it unusable. Also, they redid the bike lane with textured hexagonal bullshit so using any wheels smaller than e-scooter wheels (skateboard, roller skate) is just a super rough ride.

Great that he stopped pedestrian casualties, but he severely harmed personal non-car transit.

grue,

because parking in that city is horrendous

There’s no such thing as horrendous parking. There is only too many people showing up by car when they ought to be walking/biking/riding transit instead.

cobra89,

He still added bike lanes that weren’t there before no? How is that harming personal non-car transit? Maybe go to city council meetings and ask that double parking in bike lanes be enforced. I would certainly think the city wants to make money from fines.

Also how many people are riding around on rollerblades? The “hexagonal bullshit” makes the bike lanes distinct and noticeable increasing awareness and also gives tactile feedback if a driver starts driving on the bike lane. Yeah it sucks for skateboarders but the tradeoffs are worth it, especially because again, how many skateboarders are there really? Some municipalities don’t even allow skateboards in bike lanes because the drastic speed difference between them and bikes tends to cause issues.

Could the bike lanes be better? Absolutely, they could be actually protected bike lanes like you pointed out but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good, they don’t “suck”. And 0 pedestrian deaths over the span of a few years is very very good.

Remember when they found out the dudes behind piratebay were like 3-5 hacktivist friends who made it in their free time lol?

Also what illegal subscriptions. Do they really think people pirate content for it to be sold and not shared?

Aux,

People who pirate content don’t do it for free. It might be news to you, but piracy is a huge business.

mlg,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Not for every average Hollywood movie ever.

There’s so many acronyms for the source because of how many people independently rip, not even including cam rips.

Now if it’s some big gun software like cobalt strike, then sure yeah people definitely charge.

But Movie and TV pirating is so easy, people regularly make their own rips and torrents.

Aux,

Again, it might be news for you, but it’s a huge business with many layers. There are plenty of professional rippers and crackers who earn a living one way or another. There are plenty of underground translators and streamers. Ads, hostings, seed boxes, TV boxes, different partnerships - there’s a lot of money flowing.

Just go to any public tracker and you will see ads. Download some subtitles and they often contain ads as well. And then you have partnerships like targeted attacks on software developers, etc. Then there are normies who are getting scammed into buying pirated content for full retail price by physical media vendors. All kinds of handy people who will install you a dish to receive pirated satellite TV “for free”.
