set_secret, to memes in It's a simple world view

Capitalism acts like a car hurtling down a highway with no brakes, powered by the roaring engine of industry.

Its insatiable thirst for growth and profits accelerates industrial activity to reckless speeds, steamrolling environmental concerns in its pursuit of relentless expansion.

Industry isn’t the villain; it’s merely the engine being pushed to its limits by capitalism’s uncontrolled, destructive momentum.

@atocci@kbin.social avatar

That is definitely not the place I would expect that to have been, thank you

potustheplant,

There’s a chevron next to the channel name, indicating that you can get more details if you tap that. I get that it’s a significant design change but I don’t think it’s that unintuitive.

Retrograde,
@Retrograde@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s a clear step in the wrong direction

LdyMeow,

It’s a little unintuitive that it shows status of the people in the server and not something to so with that specific channel.

potustheplant,

Not quite. It shows the online status for the people that are in that channel. Not all users are in all channels so, imo, it makes sense. The only complaint I can think of is that you can’t see the status for all of the people in a server.

atocci,
@atocci@kbin.social avatar

It's not clear though, because if I reminder correctly, tapping channel names before this update would give you information related to the channel, didn't it?

potustheplant,

And it still does…

Liz,

It does the same as it did before. Hitting the channel name was just an alternative navigation method to swiping the chat window.

I’m a Mormon, and this just can’t be real. Sexual contact is sexual contact. How would people told to leave enough room for a Bible between them while dancing think that this would be okay?

I’m convinced this rumor exists just because people want it to be true.

WaxedWookie, (edited )

I can’t speak for this particular practice, or for Mormons, but things like the poophole loophole and the clapper are definitely nonsense tricks to try and get one past an omniscient creator - to an outsider (in my case, one that lived in Provo for a short stint), it’s plausible.

SexualPolytope, (edited ) to linux in Just install EndeavorOS lol
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

For a total newbie, Linux Mint or PopOS are probably the best options. But EndeavourOS is getting there. There shouldn’t be any issues during the installation if one sticks to the defaults. Only thing is, it doesn’t come with a graphical package manager out of the box. But once that is installed (I think anyone will be happy to write a single terminal command, at least), I don’t see why it’s any harder to use than any other distro.

andrew_bidlaw,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Mint, with any DE, does come with a graphical package manager. It’s as easy as any appstore. The only confusion is it suggests both it’s original and flatpack versions to install.

I think you are talking about EndevourOS there.

@DrJenkem@lemmy.blugatch.tube avatar

The article opens with “what about America’s response to 9/11?”. JFC, what a shitty justification. America was clearly wrong to war crime all over Iraq just as Israel is in the wrong for warcriming all over Palestine. I refuse to “both sides” imperialists and their victims. Frankly, “both sides” is the trap one should avoid.

Zaktor,

Iraq was also a consequence of 9/11. It would never have happened without it.

Tavarin,
@Tavarin@lemmy.ca avatar

Arguable, Iraq was Bush Jr. finishing what his father started in the late 80s. It may well have happened even without 9/11. Afghanistan however was a direct consequence of 9/11, and is a more apt metaphor for what Israel is doing now.

Zaktor,

I think Bush would want to do it, but would never have been able to get the go along without the war fever.

DrJenkem,
@DrJenkem@lemmy.blugatch.tube avatar

Yes, first was Afghanistan. But the Iraq invasion was still under the “war on terror”. Besides, I was simply referring to the author’s argument:

But he added that we had to consider what the US did when attacked on 9/11: it invaded Iraq, with 200,000 [his figures] killed in three years.

Tavarin,
@Tavarin@lemmy.ca avatar

Iraq may well have been invaded even without 9/11, as it was Bush Jr. finishing what his father started in the late 80s.

The direct consequence of 9/11 was Afghanistan, and thus is a more apt metaphor for what is happening with Israel right now.

bedrooms,

There's no point raising a metaphor in the first place. A metaphor doesn't justify anything. It's just a rhetorical tool that is supposed to help deliver a point. However, all it does in this instance is mess and draw confusion.

DefyTheLegends, to memes in those ppl...

I’ll be honest, I am still browsing Reddit, though in a more limited fashion. I deleted all my submissions and comments and refuse to post or comment, no matter how strong the urge to correct misinformation regarding topics I am interested in is. Communities for those topics are generally non-existent, got created and withered within a month of the 3rd-Party-Exodus, or in the case of /r/leagueoflegends and its local mirrors, are generally carried by the eSport scene and there is generally no decent discussion to be had outside of that. And I don’t even know if one of the League communities here even does post-match threads.

Nahdahar,

I noticed a massive drop of quality after the api changes (though it’s been declining for a couple years now) and after a while I just realized there is no point, so I mostly only kept subreddits related to my country. The balance of repost bots/trolls/idiots/people who think saying the same joke a million times is funny vs. people you actually can converse with really started outweighing the latter ever since covid hit and Reddit got even more popular (it was on a slow decline regardless). The api changes just made everything even worse.

I’d like to think things here will be better, and to be honest I’m really liking Lemmy so far.

DefyTheLegends,

The quality of reddit posts outside of niche communities or events has tanked a lot. Most of the stuff at the top is AITA(H), the most basic questions, and reposts, with some short video clips and the occasional comic. Doesn’t help that it is known that someone is using LLMs for bot accounts.

IMALlama,

Agree on communities over here getting created during the exodis, seeing a small surge, and then kind of withering. I’m subbed to 15ish communities that aren’t even all that niche (3D printing, photography, woodworking) and it’s rare that they all get one post per day. There are obviously people lurking because posts will get comments, but I think we’re all a little wary of being the person to post a bunch of content for fear of no one else doing so.

NedDasty,

The people on here on are on mighty high horses but don’t realize they’re still in the children’s section. It’s so cringey. I want to hate reddit but the lemmings here are sometimes vomitable. Stop comparing redditors. Redditors are YOU, just earlier or later. You were a redditor before! If you weren’t, then you crawled out of some miracle vaginal and found your way to the lemmyverse.

There is a tree right next to it. LOL so obviously space for trees. The trunks take up less space, its just they require pulling up surrounding sidewalk sometimes, and maintenance crew for trimming and watering in dry spells.
