xmunk, (edited ) to cooking in Salmon slightly freezer burned - will it still be edible?

Sure, though, it might be a good idea to make a more highly flavored meal like cheese crusted or maple glazed. My favorite form of salmon (baked and topped with a piccata like sauce) would probably be pretty underwhelming if the meats not in great shape.

That all said a few months in the freezer probably wouldn’t sap out too much flavor, even if it was just in a zip lock bag.

dirthawker0,

Thank you, good to have reassurance. I have it in a miso honey garlic marinade right now which I think will help. Another possibility which I often use for the tail end bits is a panang curry.

avidamoeba, (edited ) to selfhosted in Sanity check - is rsyncing to a remote computer that has zfs snapshotting an okay way to back things up?
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Using plain rsync sounds sane.

Sending local ZFS snapshots to the remote ZFS might be problematic. Consider accidentally deleting important data locally and nuking all of your local snapshots, then sending that to the remote ZFS. You lost all of your snapshots and there’s no way to recover the deleted data. Instead do what I do - keep the two ZFS systems separate and use a non-ZFS mechanism to transfer data - rsync, Syncthing, etc. That way even if you delete everything locally, nuke all local snapshots and send the deletions via rsync remotely, you could still recover your data by restoring the remote ZFS to a snapshot prior to the deletions. For reference I have two ZFS machines doing frequent snapshots and Syncthing replicating data between them on immediate basis.

!selfhosted, please do critique if you find some fundamental issues with this.

abies_exarchia,

This is fantastically helpful, thank you. I will do this.

I don’t know why I thought sending zfs snapshots was the better option

avidamoeba, (edited )
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Cause it makes sense at a glance and it’s efficient. Not for backup purposes though.

BCsven,

Zfs send / receive might be what you want

avidamoeba,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Wouldn’t send/receive also sync snapshots across ZFS instances?

BCsven,

Docs say this , so yeah. "send streams can either be “full”, containing all data in a given snapshot, or “incremental”, containing only the differences between two snapshots. ZFS receive reads these send streams and uses them to re-create identical snapshots on a receiving system. "

ryannathans,

You don’t sync the deletion of snapshots, you use expiry on the remote

I quite like stromae on occasion. And I’m a fan of rammstein, but while I don’t speak German I do understand it reasonably well so I’m not sure that counts

Socsa, to asklemmy in How are you all making it right now with grocery store prices?

My spreadsheet shows my grocery costs are about 12% higher than last year. A difference of around $10/wk.

How often do you need to watch the same movies for ‘dont really watch’ to be a category?

Diabolo96,

I never watch a movie more than once unless it’s just happens to be already playing, and even then it depends if it’s actually worth watching a second time.

weirdbeardgame, (edited )

If it’s easier. You can think of the scenario being when browsing you have this reaction. “Yup! That’s a good ass movie” Skips to the next one everytime you see it.

altima_neo, to asklemmy in When someone says "kiss my ass" does it refer to the hole or the cheek?
@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

Depends. Did they say kiss my ass, or kiss my asshole?

cheese_greater,

Nobody says the latter our side of the pond

KpntAutismus, to asklemmy in What's a movie you don't really watch but your damn proud to have on your shelf?

on my NAS, there are a lot of funky movies. i’m proud of all the shitty movies i watched just for fun, many of them will continue gathering dust on my hard drive.

maybe i’ll watch mortal engines again.

fogstormberry,

I watched mortal engines. I remember absolutely nothing. maybe I’ll watch too

oh my god, this (basically culture war) is so hard to witness as a european.

just use signal for god’s sake.

I can’t force my friends to use it. I can’t even get them to install telegram

I have gotten my friend group to switch to using Signal for our group chat. It was pretty hard because I’m the only Android user but I ended up convincing them

DestroyerOfWorlds, to cooking in Salmon slightly freezer burned - will it still be edible?

A trick I use with questionable fish is to soak the fillet in milk after it thaws for 20 min to 2 hours. Pat it dry and glaze/season. It usually takes any “fishyness” smell/flavor out of it.

Empire of The Sun and Fiddler on The Roof. Two classics, one with young Christian Bale, stupidity of war when people stop being humans, and second about dark Europe history but also love, family, getting older.

Two absolute essentials.
