Damage, to piracy in I finally uploaded a whole terabyte in a single session. I'm a super seeder!

I left my computer running for 6 days, I never thought I’d get this far! But that electricity bill’s gonna sting…

A Raspberry Pi with an USB drive should use no more than 20W of power, if you want to further your endeavors.

Tja,

Even the newest Pis use around 2W on idle (which seeding torrents basically is). I’d say the whole setup would be under 10W, or under 5W if the disk is 2.5".

Do you really think someone out there is going to see a random post where a guy says he has uploaded a bunch of… something and decide to try to investigate to find out what?

That’s not how it works. Even if he had included actual torrent names in the screenshot, the chances of someone caring enough to pursue it are infinitesimal.

    Michal,

It doesn’t say anywhere that he’s seeding pirated media. Seeding is not illegal.

I feel like you shouldn’t be advertising online that you’re uploading large quantities of pirated media? Just kinda seems like common sense? Some of you guys are very trusting lol.

Hey, I clearly stated that I was uploading Linux ISOs and research papers! I never said anything about pirated media!

spoilerIn all seriousness though, in hindsight I probably should have used an alt account to post this. If my home instance becomes compromised, I could end up in hot water…

    silverhand,

He would’ve definitely made more even as a senior employee in early Microsoft, IBM or any of the big Corps. Linux exists solely because he made it a collaborative endeavour from the start.

    Ramin_HAL9001,

Linux exists solely because he made it a collaborative endeavour from the start.

That is the important part. If Linux had tried to compete with Microsoft as a closed-source operating system, no one would have used it. What makes Linux popular is that it is collectively owned, that is as much a feature of the operating system as any technology or algorithm written into the source code itself. That feature is what set it apart from Windows or Mac OS.

it’s illegal. the blm will come with guns and force you out. i know this for a fact. not can i just find some land and grow my food and raise animals. it’s either owned by someone or it’s govt land.

    NotJustForMe,

Absolutely. So instead of building up on that, declaring everyone may own something, making them mini billionaires in principle; yeah, make owning land illegal. That would be the natural conclusion.

You are basically saying: other people owning things and keeping me from building a house and a live should be illegal. Your solution: Make everyone own something, so they can build a house! Houses for everyone, hurray! But hey, my family is twice as big as yours, my house should, by right, be bigger. And hey, my farm supplies for ten families, it should, by right, be bigger. You don’t want to farm, let me buy your land and provide for you. And so the circle begins.

I’d say, that thinking is what got us here in the first place.

    iquanyin,
    @iquanyin@lemmy.world avatar

i’m pretty sure that native americans were able to not own land and work this out. i do think owning land is absurd. also, all i need to do is look around to know that how we are doing things has to change if our species wants to keep living. i don’t mean what you think but it’s the wee hours here, the key word being “wee” as that’s why i got up for a sec. so…back to sleep it is.

    arbitrary_sarcasm,

By that logic, nothing is a human right since you can find food, water and shelter in the wild.

The problem with that logic is that you assume everyone to be physically able and knowledgeable to live off the land.

    NotJustForMe,

Well, it takes some time to grow up to be able to find food and water. How long until we can walk even?

Food, water and means to provide an upbringing until offspring can care for themselves, those could be considered basic rights.

Housing is so far into the technological advancements, building up on so many other systems, I fail to see how that can be a right.

Air and food on the other hand, and sensible means to acquiring those. Well. There certainly is room for discussion. When people start owning land, keeping others to effectively do those things, they should have to provide alternatives. Or we have to abolish ownership of natural resources at all. Both can’t work together. That’s ineffective, of course, and makes planning and advancement difficult.

The price of capitalism and ownership of nature should be compensation. Nothing natural about social structures. If they want to continue those money games, they need to play by the rules of nature. Or they’ll go down with chopped-off heads at some point.

    Sagifurius,

That’s right. Nothing is a human right. Many humans have rights outlined in their countries constitutions but even those are easily stomped on with usually little consequence

    arbitrary_sarcasm, (edited )

And you’re saying that shouldn’t be the case right ? Right ?

It has also never happened, there has never been a time in all of history. And the declaration of human rights isn’t broadly accepted either.

    AstralPath,

Your town likely doesn’t need a tank, but the major metro area within range of that tank is gonna need to call upon it next time the cops decide to kneel on someone’s neck.

    ImplyingImplications,

My local force recently bought a used armoured personnel carrier (APC) for $100,000 which didn’t go over well with the community. They posted a message explaining they were coming up on fiscal year end and had excess budget they wanted to use up so their budget wouldn’t be reduced next year. That didn’t really help.

It’s mostly used to park next to public events. Arts in the Park? Don’t worry! We got an APC here to protect you! Weekly farmers market? Don’t worry! The APC is here! Sometimes the emergency response team (our version of swat) will also put out a table with all their rifles and gear so they can look cool in front of any teenagers in attendance. It’s weird.

    Liz,

There are way better things to spend your money on so that your budget doesn’t shrink next year. Arguments of whether they need they money or not aside, that’s a real problem for them. Ideas off the top of my head that probably wouldn’t signal to the town that they’re under occupation:

    • Ammo and range time • Conflict management training • Public relations block party • Solar panels on the roof • Diet, exercise, and lifestyle training • Law review classes

    XeroxCool,

“we have to irresponsibly spend the remainder of our budget so it doesn’t get reduced next year” followed one month later by “we need more money because we maxed out the budget last year”

Fuck this atrocious cycle. It’s everywhere. Military, police, any other government branch, corporate politics, 501c orgs pretending to be charities… The greatest crime is stockpiling unsent capital, apparently.

    Finally

This is the keyword for such a city. It should've gotten such a system already by now when reaching the first million. All these arab/middle eastern cities seem so extremely focused on car infrastructure to a rather disturbing degree. And all the carbrains I know think these cities are the pinacle of modern city development: all just gigantic glass skyscrapers and highways circling around them - nothing else.

Also, back on Facebook/Instagram, there's not a single person who had the money to visit Dubai once and post pictures from there (at least that I'm aware of), that is not car brained. I'm sure they all use their car everywhere and nothing less, they could even be doing their basic shopping from the corner store with it, I think.

Not all cities, but I do understand your sentiment and it is echoed by many locally. Luckily the people in the top are aware they need to fix this. Though even if they ever did, who wants to walk when its 37C at night? Some cities have installed outdoor cooling.

One interesting concept is “the line” city, basically one ultra long building. No need for cars and you can travel from one end to the other via high speed metro. It’s basically a city optimized for public transport and so that everyone’s apartment has a beautifu view on unspoiled nature (well desert in this case haha)

At a certain point, a useful idiot still becomes an enemy combatant.

Perhaps, but since this is a war of manipulation, you always have to consider: are you fighting those responsible for turning us against each other, or are you fighting who they want you to fight?

I’m not saying to let the cops off the hook. That depends on the answer to the question. I’m speaking more generally here.

    force, (edited )

there’s a point where who’s responsible and who’s a victim doesn’t really matter to most people and survival against aggressors becomes more important than considering the philosophical/psychological implications

navigating through the complexity of the mind to determine who really “deserves” it is mostly just a lost cause, you get wacky results like concluding that the people in power are actually just victims of their own greed and human psychology, that the universe and therefore life is deterministic and no one is truly at fault for their actions, etc. etc. which could all be easily justified standpoints but are mostly irrelevant to our actual situations

    Sotuanduso,

Yeah, you’re right. We are all victims, the people in power too. And most of us involved in politics are aggressors, and are to blame for it. I try my best not to be, because I’m a disciple of love, and my real enemy is hatred, of which political hatred seems to be the most prevalent these days. I still push back against other forms of hatred when I run into them, to be clear.

It’s not a game of survival against aggressors, or at least not nearly as much as it seems to be. The propaganda tells you conservatives want to kill minorities, but most of them (discounting the leaders and the crazies) wouldn’t dream of it. A lot of them are conservatives mostly because the propaganda tells them that liberals want to kill babies.

The actual minority-haters do fall into the conservative bucket, yes, but that’s because it’s the closest bucket to their position. The leaders take advantage of it to boost their numbers, but I don’t think it’s exactly fair to blame the rest of them for it when there are only two buckets.

Most conservatives are people with souls and morals if you’ll get to know them. You don’t have to cave to their position, I’m just asking you to put aside your differences and try to understand them. If you try to understand one and learn that they’re a disciple of hatred trying to slowly drag the world back to the 1700s so they can own slaves, that’s a yike, but don’t paint the rest of them with that same brush until you’ve taken a fair sampling.

True. The things they say about the ATF and FBI would make you think they’re extremely anti-police, but then you notice they never badmouth the DEA or ICE even though they inflict the exact same kind of brutality on the civilian population.

But because the FBI arrests white supremacists and the ATF sends you a fine for engraving a punisher logo over your AR15’s serial number, they’re the worst.
