julianh, to linux in What are some must have Linux compatible VSTs?

Vital is… well, vital. There’s also a huge collection of basic effects for Linux here: lsp-plug.in

I also use a lot of windows vsts though yabridge.

@astraeus@programming.dev avatar

I wonder if these LSP Plugins work for Reaper on a Mac or Windows, gonna try it out but I expect it will have issues

neidu2,

Could you please provide a brief description of Vital? I’m in the process of rebuilding my musicmaking setup after a 15 years long hiatus, so I need to update myself on what’s out there.

On that note, it looks like I’m gonna go for bitwig over Ardour. Any thoughts/opinions on that?

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Unless I went to the wrong place, it’s a wavetable synth.

vital.audio

julianh,

Vital is a vst similar to Serum, a pretty popular paid vst. It has a bunch of preset sounds but offers a lot of options for effects and automation to design your own sounds. I use it a ton personally and get a lot of range from it.

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

How well does yabridge work? I own a metric fuckton of VST plugins.

That said, I might keep my Linux system as a place to play with FOSS plugins, but I am still curious.

scharf_2x40,

Reasonable well.

Getting plugins to install is often a big hurdle, if they are working, they work. However I think performance suffers alot. Didn’t try it on any bigger synths yet tho.

HouseWolf,

Might depend on what DAW you use but I found it abit tedious to setup with Ardour, but after that it worked perfectly with the VSTs I was running on Windows, mainly Amplitube 5.

julianh,

I use it for spitfire labs, ott, and delay lama (very important) and all work great. There are occasional crashes when messing with parameters, but usually those don’t happen more then once. I haven’t noticed any performance issues.

Hellmo_Luciferrari,

I look forward to trying yabridge, thank you for the link!

BautAufWasEuchAufbaut, (edited ) to linuxmemes in Evil maid or something? Idk I use LUKS
@BautAufWasEuchAufbaut@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

LUKS doesn’t protect you from an evil maid attack. It hides your data when your stuff gets stolen in a powered off state, but it provides neither verification of data, nor does it provide verified/secure/safe boot.
In simple terms: the very first thing which gets loaded needs to be unencrypted (barring some exceptions I will omit here), which can get replaced with an evil version by the evil maid.

BautAufWasEuchAufbaut,
@BautAufWasEuchAufbaut@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

See safeboot.dev for a project which tries to fix this.

9tr6gyp3,

You can also check out the sbctl package.

fl42v,

Well, yeah, luks + sb with custom keys + auto-lock when a usb gets ejected or smth is preferable

redditReallySucks,
@redditReallySucks@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Is it even possible to mitigate such an issue? Will resetting the bios by removing the cmos battery not also disable password protection in the bios thus making it possible to disable secure boot?

And at that point could they not just use a hardware keylogger or something?

BautAufWasEuchAufbaut, (edited )
@BautAufWasEuchAufbaut@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes, with a TPM. A TPM (2.0) can seal secrets and only release it when a machine fulfills certain configuration and state requirements (saved into registers called PCRs).
For example: make the decryption key one part dependant on a passphrase you memorized (to not only rely on a TPM), and one part on something saved in a TPM. If you select the correct PCRs when saving the latter, and your TPM works as advertised (and doesn’t offer an easy way to eavesdrop/fool it), removing the battery would make the TPM not release the secret (if removing the battery even still works on modern machines).
However, this depends on having a unified kernel image, having configured dm-verity and maybe more stuff I don’t recall right now. Probably should also make sure you don’t allow Microsoft’s Secure Boot keys and instead only your own. I hope this will get easier in the future, but I know SystemD is actively developing useful tools for that (e.g. ukify).
That all doesn’t mean the critique of TPMs (intransparent, proprietary) is invalid. Maybe we’ll have OpenTitan based TPMs at some point?

Signtist, to memes in The "Left"

To be fair, as a democrat, I generally view conservative voters as easily-misled people - essentially “dumb,” I view conservative leaders as thugs trying to overthrow America, and I view conservative corporate heads as ruling class elites. When you’re using such an overarching term as “Conservative” or “Left” it comes with the unsaid caveat that there are many subgroups that can differ greatly from one another.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot,

Yeah. The leadership is #2 and #3 while the rank-and-file are #1.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I don’t know how anyone wants to self identify as a conservative whose platform is currently:

  1. The dumbest with Donald Trump slurring and stumbling over his speeches
  2. The thugs trying to overthrow America with “Project 2025”, war on WOKENESS, book burning and being anti-choice
  3. The constant meddling of oil companies, cable companies, news companies into what information we get - along with dark money getting funneled to politicians to suddenly say moronic shit like “we can’t take gov money to feed school children”
ohlaph,

Oh, they just relate to the poor speech, lack of coherent sentences, and overwhelming pride.

They just shout “one of us, one of us” a bit louder with each misstep.

Signtist,

The conservative voters I know all stand for one thing: stubbornness. They make a decision to do something, they do it until they die, and they take great pride in doing so.

It’s essentially vikings if, instead of needing to die in battle to get to Valhalla, you needed to die of an easily-preventable disease because you never got that weird lump checked out, because if you’d admitted you had a problem you’d be weak, which is worse than death.

pingveno,

Now you’re reminding me of my uncle and his multiple hernias. He waited for years to get them taken care of because he didn’t want to have to deal with the recovery time.

jballs,

I live in a very conservative neighborhood and can say that stubbornness seems to play a huge, huge part of it. But I also wouldn’t discount the insecurity that plays into a lot of conservative men as well. The kind that buys huge trucks, just to commute to an office job. The kind that tries overly hard to impress you in weird “manly” ways, like always having a beer in their hand when they know you’re coming over for something.

Basically half the guys around here are either stubborn dickheads who do things like refuse to tell their wives when they’re going out of town for work - and the other half are dudes constantly trying to validate their manhood by projecting a flimsy aura of toughness. Frankly, it’s exhausting.

marx2k,

dickheads who do things like refuse to tell their wives when they’re going out of town for work

lol wait what?

jballs,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sorry, that was a very personal reference to a neighbor of mine. He does it all the time, so she’ll do stuff like make dinner and then he just doesn’t come home. When she texts him to find out if he’s working late, he’ll be like “I had to fly to Montana for work.”

He’s the most stereotypical stubborn Republican that I can imagine. He considers himself a libertarian because he doesn’t want to pay taxes for pesky things like roads and schools. But he also has very strong feelings that women shouldn’t be able to get abortions, which shouldn’t really jive with the small government thing. He’s a solid red voter down ballot every election.

marx2k,

This reminds me of a coworker I had who used to call the Department of natural resources and try to convince the poor clerk that he shouldn’t have to pay for a fishing license for him and his wife because gay people have the right to get married. I still don’t understand the logic on that but that’s what I overheard.

He then went on to attempt to abduct the governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer.

jballs,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

He then went on to attempt to abduct the governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer.

Well that certainly took an abrupt, if not entirely unexpected, turn.

marx2k,

Trust me, it did for everyone that worked with the guy.

Schadrach,

like always having a beer in their hand when they know you’re coming over for something.

I mean, there’s an alternate explanation for this one - it’s not only when they know you’re coming over, they just have a problem.

jballs,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nah. I have friends that are alcoholics and this guy ain’t one. But a beer in his hand and a giant truck in the driveway might make you think he’s a blue collar bad ass instead of a skinny nerdy engineer.

Asafum,

Because of propaganda.

  1. A Self-made Business Man™ is miles better than Bumbling Biden the fascist communist.
  2. WOKENESS IS KILLING AMERICA. Books brainwash you into being woke. Project 2025 will save us from woke.

3.Thats the liberal media, “my guys” are normal working men, they wear plaid shirts sometimes and pose for pictures in a workshop.

No I don’t actually believe any of that, but that’s your list in conservative language served to the masses by your friendly thousands of miles away neighborhood newscaster propagandist.

Person doesn’t want to date person with OF

Person with OF doesn’t want to date person

It seems the universe is in harmony.

ieightpi, (edited )

If you think about, this makes the most sense. A person with an OF is getting their rocks off without other people present most of the time. Unless they are doing content with someone who enjoys making stuff too. But I think the majority of content creators are solo ventures.

In that most common scenario you would have a person not comfortable making content dating someone who does. That relationship is going to end eventually when OF creator is getting their sexual needs met and the SO isn’t getting enough attention to satisfy their needs.

But of course there will always be outliers like asexual people or having opposite libidos. Which those situations might work great to have an OF side gig.

But if we are talking the majority or people, I think its safe to say one OF creator dating a non-OF creator is probably not very likely.

graymess,

Relationships typically involve more than just sex.

sukhmel,
stoneparchment,

OF content creators date non-creators all the time, just like other sex workers. There’s more to relationships than sex, and content creation isn’t the same thing as actual sexual intimacy and connection

My views on Republicans are similar. The voters are both ignorant and poor, as well as selfish and wealthy. Those are two subsets of the same group. The leadership tends to fall into the latter category, with a few idiots thrown in for good measure.

haui_lemmy,

Most comments make this conclusion.

But none mention that at this point, hating on the left, the right or anyone other than those shoveling money is helping the status quo stay like it is.

Any radicalization is a direct effect of financial despair (slowly creeping up). The fascists are a symptom but the greedy are the disease.

It is what brought hitler to power and it is the same for trump. Please unionize and start striking, your life depends on it.
