People are probably not feeling better under communism. But yes, the state of the world is just super depressing. We have zero good world leaders, and no future to look forward to.

funkless_eck,

I know two people who grew up in a kibbutz. One says it was the best time, one says it was the worst time. You can likely do the same for any form of government or economy.

Nah, I’m pretty sure people in China are feeling pretty good about their country’s development:

The real (inflation-adjusted) incomes of the poorest half of the Chinese population increased by more than four hundred percent from 1978 to 2015, while real incomes of the poorest half of the US population actually declined during the same time period. www.nber.org/system/files/…/w23119.pdf

From 1978 to 2000, the number of people in China living on under $1/day fell by 300 million, reversing a global trend of rising poverty that had lasted half a century (i.e. if China were excluded, the world’s total poverty population would have risen) semanticscholar.org/…/c883fc7496aa1b920b05dc2546b…

From 2010 to 2019 (the most recent period for which uninterrupted data is available), the income of the poorest 20% in China increased even as a share of total income. data.worldbank.org/indicator/SI.DST.FRST.20?end=2…

By the end of 2020, extreme poverty, defined as living on under a threshold of around $2 per day, had been eliminated in China. According to the World Bank, the Chinese government had spent $700 billion on poverty alleviation since 2014. www.nytimes.com/…/china-poverty-xi-jinping.html

Dark Lords handing out rings is no basis for a system of government. I mean, If I went around saying I was an emperor just because a shape shifting necromancer lobbed some jewelry at me, they’d put me away!

Hazmatastic,

I just realized, that bit about being an anarcho-syndicalist community with an elected officer who is in charge for a period is pretty much how government worked in the Shire if I remember correctly.

if you live in the US and are on Medicaid, you might be able to get a box of dental supplies for free. i have UniCare and they sent me an electric toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. i’m sure other Medicaid/Medicare insurance companies offer similar, so make sure to check their websites.

Maybe I’m dumb but I don’t understand the “format” - are the top and bottom sections of text supposed to be related to the middle text? Why is the text over a bottle of alcohol?

lewdian69,

The top text is after only a drink, the middle text is after a few drinks, the bottom text is hammered

knorke3,

thanks - understood the librarian joke but got confused by the format :P

My dad was a Hell’s Angel. I’m pretty sure I have a few siblings I’ve never met. I never actually even considered that until right now, and I’m surprised at the ease at which I arrived at certainty.

Just read a great library based crime thriller and I’ve been sharing it with everyone.

“How Can I Help You” by Laura Sims. A serial killer and a wannabe writer go head-to-head in a small town library.

I mean people using libraries for the most part don’t really understand the decimal system and probably wouldn’t get the significance of it being in the 000s - especially the 000s where it’s sandwiched between computer science and knowledge structure & other general works. When I’m compelled to aquire a bs book in any category, simply because patron demand is high, I prefer it be in the same section as factual information so it may be drowned out a little more. (And I say aquire, instead of purchase, since those types of books I try to rent so they can be returned after it’s been taken out by those requesting it and it never makes its way into our full collection)

I do like the meme though! This format is pretty great and we do indeed need more librarian memes, I don’t mean to get all pedantic here haha

My friend doesn’t get it.

ForgetPrimacy,

My friend is having some trouble too, could someone help me explain it to them?

SchrodingersPat,

Of course. And no worries. I know it’s a niche joke. Buckle up it’s a long one. Many public libraries, at least in the US, use the Dewey Decimal System (000-999) to organize their nonfiction books. The gist is that Mellville Dewey is problematic for many reasons, but for this example you have to know that when organizing books, Dewey’s best practice is that known hoaxes are categorized and shelved right along with the nonfiction books in the same category. For example the book 1421 claims that America was discovered by the Chinese in year 1421. This book is shelved right along the rest of American history in 945.05. However, the 000’s is the “contested knowledge” which has ghosts, UFOs, Bigfoot, etc. I feel that moving books like 1421 into 000s it lets librarians contextualize books by essentially saying “we think this book is as true as ghosts.”

UnverifiedAPK,

Isn’t 000 Computer Science?

SchrodingersPat,

Yes. I don’t remember the exact numbers but the early 000s deal with computers and the later 000 deal with hoaxes and forgeries

TexMexBazooka,

Yes, like they said, contested knowledge

ForgetPrimacy,

Oh fantastic! I am proud to have observed this exhibit of librarian “humor”, thank you and your children.
