Obviously not trying to downplay this HUGE humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but why does media/politics always frame these things like adult men aren’t victims also?
5000 civilians (women who have borne children) killed is just a statistic; 2 mothers killed each hour is horrific and brutal. Love the intent, hate the headline. I’m with you, I’d prefer they not attempt to ply me with “think of the children mothers” rhetoric. This is a humanitarian disaster; it’s a shame so many humans have been immunized to destruction and empathetic grief by religion.
It’s obvious why the media does it: because it resonates with people.
No one is going to argue that mothers and their children are out there keeping the war going, asking for it. They are incontrovertibly innocent, not a single edge lord is going to say "well yeah, but maybe they were making molotovs and committing war crimes.
Combine the patriarchal commodification of women and children together with the mindset of toxic masculinity that treats the death of a man cynically as both a removal of competition, and as a failure on their part to survive, and you get a subconscious mindset that anyone else will only care about deaths if they were women’s or children’s.
Also, more specific to this conflict, Israel is actively framing any adult male (and many male minors) as being a potential combatant, and using that to dismiss their deaths as not bad. Pointing out that they are killing so many women and children (not just minors, but children) is also being done to make it harder for them to claim that their attacks are all or even mostly killing combatants.
This is going to be one of those moments that creates a generational shift.
Boomers are never going to turn on Israel en masse, but when Millennials and Zoomers are in control, you can bet that Israel ain’t gonna be on many peoples’ list of allies.
What you posted is in context…? I don’t understand what you mean. I mean out of context as in the absence of politics and nations… The world’s alone… With no context.
Hamas is maintaining a stockpile of more than 200,000 gallons of fuel for the rockets it fires into Israel and the generators that provide clean air and electricity to its network of underground tunnels, according to U.S. officials, current and former Israeli officials and academics.
Israel released photos of Hamas fuel stores however I don’t understand how they can know if there is anything in them.
Maybe night time infrared imagery indicates that full ones retain heat? (And maybe water would retain it differently?). But even if we presume that is possible, why don’t IDF just bomb them if they are so sure it is Hamas fuel?
When the fighting finally stops, the costs to children “will be borne out for decades to come”, he said, due to the horrific trauma faced by survivors.
Mr. Elder cited the example of a UNICEF staffer’s four-year-old daughter in Gaza who has started self-harming because of the daily stress and fear, while her mother told colleagues, “I do not have the luxury to think about my children’s mental health – I just need to keep them alive”
Kill a kid’s whole family, take awah their livelihood, lock them in an open air prison, shoot at them when they try to peacefully walk out of the cage you built, and what do you think they’re going to do next?
Its almost like Israel wants to create terrorist organizations…
The media will literally wring their hands until this genocide is over, because as we’re all finding out, no one is willing to stand up to the US or China just to save some poor Palestinians or Uyghurs from being ‘displaced’ (from life).
Gaza was given to Arabs for self rule and determination in 2005, all Jews left Gaza, even Jewish graveyards were dug up and moved, it was theirs to do with as they liked.
They've spent the last 18 years making into a terrorist Disneyland with a dozen Islamofascist terrorist organizations with the stated goal of killing Jews and destroying the state of Israel, they've fired hundreds of thousands of missiles into Israel indiscriminately targeting civilians, and launched countless cross borders attacks against Jewish civilians, including one that caused the largest loss of Jewish life in any single day, anywhere, since the Holocaust on October 7th.
They were given Gaza to live in freedom and self determination, they used it to kill Jews. They were warned. They chose to ignore the warnings.
These acts of terrorism were perpetrated by the entire Gazan community, they voted for Hamas, and allowed Hamas to rule their government for the last 17 years, Hamas and all the other Islamic terrorists in Gaza are not outsiders, they were born in Gaza of Gazans, they were raised in Gaza, they were educated in Gaza, they married and had children of their own in Gaza, their Parents, teachers, mosques, hospitals, are all in Gaza, from which they use to hid and store weapons to attack Jews, Hamas, PIJ and all the other Islamic terrorist in Gaza ARE Gaza, there has been no uprising in Gaza, there have only been attacks on Israel. This is what Gazans have supported and sacrificed for in every way they possibly could.
And now it's here. I do hope they enjoy what they've worked generationaly to achieve. There will be no ceasefire this time.
Dude, no matter how you feel about the actions of Hamas and other violent groups, empathy for the children impacted by war and violence is a sign of basic humanity. Telling children to cry you a river is just sick.
For both Israel and Hamas, those numbers are just statistics - an unfortunate, but acceptable sacrifice to get their political ends. And the rest of the world has a limited capacity to grieve.
