I’ve been here for like 6 months now, maybe more. Posts SEEM to be getting more engagement than when I started. It definitely doesn’t seem like there are fewer users.

dumpsterlid,

The vibrancy of communities is what matters, not total numbers. I have definitely noticed a solidification of new communities into places that feel longterm sustainable.

I mean also people are really tired and beat up, in the US most people are worse off than they were before the pandemic (not good). I don’t blame people for not having the mental bandwidth to join a new social network.

averagedrunk,

That has been my favorite hacker lore story since I first heard it decades ago.

averagedrunk,

Absolutely not. I left that job not long after. It officially became someone else’s problem.

I assume they’re not using it anymore. The company was purchased last year so I have to think that they have problems with other code that makes no sense.

AngryCommieKender,

Legacy spaghetti code gets used for too often in my experience.

averagedrunk,

Agreed.

Theoretically they could still be using it, but it’s pretty doubtful. It was just a GUI to run a set of scripts for an old set of programs that should have been retired before XP came out.

I was at an MSP at the time. One of our customers had stuff that wouldn’t install on anything after Win98, was looking for a bunch of hardware that no longer exists, and all the associated DLLs had to be registered manually. I created it because I was tired of doing it all by hand.

My assumption would be the guys who were there at the same time as me used it (I know they did actually), but a year after I left the whole bullpen turned over and I doubt they used it after that. They lost a pile of clients. Even if that hadn’t happened, if they’re still supporting 25 year old software with 15 year old scripts run by a 12 year old and poorly hacked together front end by a guy who was definitely not a programmer at the time (and barely is now) then they get whatever they deserve.

Catfish, in Why? Are we not doing enough?
@Catfish@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Infinite growth is not a good thing, numbers rise and fall just let it do it’s own thing. That being said, maybe if the Lemmy instances would stop defederating like children snatching toys from one another at a daycare it would get more engagement.

explodicle,

How do you think they can better address the problem of abusive users from other servers?

Azzu, (edited )

I mean how did it work on Reddit? You banned the abusive users.

explodicle,

That wouldn’t work on Lemmy because one can make infinity user names on an instance without CAPTCHAs (or any other throttling).

And even then, Reddit tended to allow a lot of trolling.

Azzu,

I’m pretty sure the complaint is about instances that do have captchas/some kind of verification enabled but still being defederated.

explodicle,

So why doesn’t the “offending” server just ban them itself?

Omega_Haxors, (edited )

Read the comments thread of ANY of the “we defederated from” posts and it’s always the same “They were annoying tankies” shit. It isn’t a matter of abusive users, they have tools for that. They just want to allow fash shit to fester unopposed by the people capable of disarming it.

Just look at any instance that has hexbear and lemmygrad blocked. Their culture is already starting to decay into becoming reddit nazi bars.

Imagine waving the receipt of your brand new TV you don’t have in your home around in public for prestige

refurbishedrefurbisher, (edited )

It’s more like you have a receipt for a link of where to get the manual for the TV.

Hildegarde,

Holding an NFT can give you ownership of an image. If you have a bored ape NFT you own some legal rights to the image.

That’s because of contract law, and IP law. A contract assigns the copyright to the holder of the NFT, and governments enforce legal contracts.

The only thing that gives NFTs any claim to value is the fact that a centralized authority can enforce it. The entire concept behind the decentralized leaderless authority of the blockchain is a myth.

workerONE, (edited )

Yeah you can own an NFT but you can own any image through a license agreement with the owner.

Hildegarde,

Yes… That’s the point of my comment.

BolexForSoup, (edited )
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

“You own the image“ functionally doesn’t mean anything in the context of NFT’s because the image component in an NFT is not actually exchanging hands so there’s nothing to truly enforce here. It doesn’t grant exclusive rights and all that comes with it, it just gives them ownership rights - an artist can’t say the owner can’t use it for their own purposes. People can screenshot it, make memes of that, etc. and you have no legal recourse because you do not have exclusive rights to the actual work. They did nothing that violates your ownership. The NFT is you have a receipt that nobody can dispute that says “I own this receipt associated with this image and can use it as such.”

When I shoot video and give people a screener, I watermark it and have legal rights to the image/video content itself. They cannot duplicate it or use it in any fashion without risking legal action by me against them. NFT’s do not have that same protection. I can screenshot a bored ape image that someone “owns,” barely augment it, and mint a new NFT with no repercussions from the person who bought the original NFT. The original artist could come after me potentially because they have the actual exclusive rights to the creation, which again does not transfer with an NFT purchase.

In addition, you don’t even own the means to protect the receipt. If the blockchain goes down, your receipt is meaningless and you don’t even have exclusive rights to the image to sell or license out.

To give one more example: if I buy a video game, I have certain ownership rights associated with that disk. This is assuming physical copies of course. I can do whatever I want with that physical copy within the bounds of ownership of a distributed IP. I can snap it in half, I can back it up to a drive, etc. What I cannot do is make copies and distribute it because I have no rights to the IP, it has not been transferred to me with the purchase. The developer/publisher still has exclusivity, they control the IP. And if somebody else makes copies of my gave to be distributed, I have no legal recourse. This is really the key factor here. That law they’re breaking is not about my ownership, it’s about the game developer and publisher’s rights to the IP. They are the only ones who have legal recourse. NFTs, it’s the same way. The artist has all of the legal protections that come with IP ownership. Not the person who bought an NFT of the artwork.

TL;DR: NFT’s are buying receipts. They’re roughly as useful as “a certificate of authenticity“ they comes bundled with collectors items that were sold on infomercials in the 90s and 2000s. Except you don’t even get to store the certificate yourself, you’re dependent on somebody else

Dangdoggo,
@Dangdoggo@kbin.social avatar

Nurse_Robot,

And the picture says “your skills are irreplaceable.” If you truly believe that basic construction is irreplaceable then I have bad news for you.

HauntedCupcake, (edited )

The point is that literally right now houses are not being 3D printed to a good enough standard that we would even think about replacing workers.

It is also true that technological progress will change that sooner or later.

I don’t think there’s a disagreement here

ChickenLadyLovesLife,

Once the elites have everything they need or want provided by AI and machines, we get death.

rwhitisissle,

I can only imagine 50 years from now, when climate crisis is in full swing, there are no more salaried jobs for people without extreme, cutting edge technological specializations or PhDs, and people are doing shit like menial servant work or acting as delivery drivers for 16 hours a day for the ultra wealthy just not to starve, you’ll have some 70 year old zoomer politician that introduces a bill to legalize prostitution in order to open up “new sources of income for struggling Americans” while quietly including a clause that effectively creates death camps for the poor. Conservative Americans will praise the bill on the basis that it’ll get rid of “welfare queens” and create more economic opportunities for the people who don’t get turned into Soylent Green.

50 years after that, America is littered with the hollowed out ghost towns of long abandoned suburbia. The coasts have been destroyed by flooding from the melted ice caps. Automated workers outnumber Americans 10 to 1. There are around 30 million Americans left in the continental United States. Almost all of them are literal slaves after slavery was re-legalized. Almost everything is owned by a handful of incredibly powerful families. Virtually everyone lives in or around Chicago. Whatever hope people once had for a better future is a long distant dream of a bygone era as the world slowly dies and the people who are left simply persist without ever truly living.

ChickenLadyLovesLife,

Virtually everyone lives in or around Chicago.

And hilariously, everyone is still paying the Saudis for parking.

nolight,

There are more of “us” than “them”.

DeepGradientAscent,
@DeepGradientAscent@programming.dev avatar

There is a danger. The select few of “us” who are “more equal” will become “them”.

How do you think slavery sustains itself? A few slaves get to become slave-masters when the old masters die.

I guess it boils down to the age old questions of what is the value of a human life, and who gets to decide what laws we base upon the answer to the first question.

nolight,

What I meant was that “they” can not just simply erase “us” from existence once we stop providing them enough value, I believe in a revolution of some kind if such practices were to be tried.

Though I do not believe it would be rational nor beneficial for the elites at the first place, I was just pointing out that there is little chance of that happening.

rwhitisissle,

There were more natives in the Americas and Caribbean when the European settlers arrived, too. Only one side had way more advanced military technology and no scruples around genocide and slavery.
