OctoFloofy, in I made a tool that transfers your reddit subscriptions to lemmy, thought maybe you all might be interested
@OctoFloofy@kbin.social avatar

Can this be used with an kbin account too?

induna_crewneck,

It would need to be edited a bit, but overall it should. The main issue I think are the selectors for the login fields on kbin. Might try to implement it when I get some more time

discosage,

There's at least a second person who would appreciate it (me)!

induna_crewneck,

Added a variation of the script that works with kbin :)

Izzgo,

I would have been another kbin user interested, but I already unsubbed from all but a couple reddit subs. Nice contribution though!

OctoFloofy,
@OctoFloofy@kbin.social avatar

is that error normal? https://i.imgur.com/fpXzKLO.png

induna_crewneck,

Not normal. Haven’t seen that one, yet either. Do you know how to redirect the output to a file and send that to me? (make sure to delete your login data before you do). If you don’t know, let me know and also tell me what operating system you’re using

OctoFloofy,
@OctoFloofy@kbin.social avatar

Unfortunately i don't know, Windows 11.

DolphLundgren, in I made a tool that transfers your reddit subscriptions to lemmy, thought maybe you all might be interested

Not to steal your thunder but the wefwef web app does this also, you just paste in your profile’s multireddit url and then it gives you a clickable list and each click searches Lemmy for all similar communities and then you can sub to any that you want.

induna_crewneck,

Didn’t know that haha. My script does the same thing pretty much. Just automatically if that maybe is worth something. And I’m not after thunder, I made this mainly for myself (and to train coding) and if someone else finds it useful that’s great

DolphLundgren,

Certainly! I think it’s important that people innovate and it’s amazing when it’s helpful for others. Keep up the great work! 😀

mrecom,

Is wefwef iOS only though?

fox2263,

It’s a web app. Now called Voyager.

DuckGuy,
@DuckGuy@lemmy.zip avatar

No, Wefwef is a webapp, meaning you can use it on anything (even on desktop.) It goes by Voyager now.

melroy, in Does anyone regret deleting their Reddit account?
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Not even a second. I'm glad to first got rid of Facebook several years ago. Then Twitter. And recently also Reddit. No regrets.

Ps. I also don't have Instagram, TikTok or any of those non-sense.

This is great, but I wish I could see /interact with Mastodon posts from Lemmy.

stopthatgirl7,
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

Iirc, you can follow them from lemmy. Kbin will let you interact because they show up in a special “microblog” area, but I’m not sure how lemmy handles it.

bettyspaghetti,
@bettyspaghetti@kbin.social avatar

I really need to figure out how to follow lemmy stuff from kbin. When I see ones on the front page that are relevant I'll follow them, but I don't know how to actively seek them out. I'm 38, have worked in tech for over a decade now, and this change makes me feel like a damn boomer lmao. Committed to figuring it out though!

Marks,
@Marks@kbin.social avatar

Really you have to use third party tools for discovery. Very hard to discover on kbin outside of the big communities. But I like kbin implementation of the threadiverse the best

Do you have any tool suggestions? Working on getting my version set up on my desktop while I patiently await an iOS app.

brainfreeze, in Reddit exodus - Using Lemmy from my existing Mastodon
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

@Arotrios had a really good post about some of the stuff you can do with kbin to follow other communities or even entire instances across the fediverse.

SubsAndDubs,

Hmm that link seems to be broken for me.

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

Still works for me. You can search by the post title:

YSK that Kbin can subscribe not only to magazines and communities, but entire instances.

It was on m/kbinMeta

SubsAndDubs,

I’m on lemmy.world, do you know if Lemmy has the same functionality? Still new to this

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

Same here!

I don't think it's exactly the same on lemmy -- you can't seem to sub to an entire instance, for example -- but there's at least some similar capability.

For instance, I'm on kbin right now, so when I click your user name I go to a kbin version of your lemmy.world profile page: https://kbin.social/u/@SubsAndDubs@lemmy.world. It has the option to block or follow you, which should show your posts in my kbin feed. As far as I know, Lemmy can't do the same with kbin users. I haven't found a way to follow other lemmy users either, except on kbin.

But on lemmy you can sub to lemmy or kbin communities, even if they're on other instances. On lemmy.world, RedditMigration has the address https://lemmy.world/c/RedditMigration@kbin.social. So it seems to be a community there that just pulls in from the original at https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration@kbin.social. (No idea why it's like this.)

So if your main instances was, say, beehaw.org, you would search for !RedditMigration and you'd see that community pop up in the results. You can subscribe to it that way and it would be in your subs list on beehaw. The same should be true of kbin magazines/communities.

It looks like each community on lemmy has their address posted next to the subscription box, so you can paste it into your lemmy.world search and sub to anything you want regardless which instance it's on.

In theory this is going to work (maybe?) with other fedi services like Mastodon, but I suspect the admins and devs have to build a lot of things, so it may not be around for awhile.

SubsAndDubs,

Thanks very much for your informative reply. Yeah I’m hoping that lemmy adds the functionality to follow people, though I might sign up to Kbin and see how that side fairs out for me. Kbin does seem to have slightly better fediverse integration.

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

What i've noticed is that each one is lacking something. I kind of like the layout of lemmy a bit more, but it doesn't have the same capability of following people or communities from all over, and I don't think you can follow users at all like in kbin and Mastodon. But kbin doesn't have any way that I can find to save posts, which is something use a lot.

SubsAndDubs,

Oh that’s interesting as in Lemmy you can save posts and comments. I can across an app called fedilab which integrates Mastodon, pixelfed, and a couple other fediverse…communities/instances?, Not sure what they’re known as, across one account. If that app manages to integrate Lemmy/Kbin it would a game changer for me.

Is Kbin just a web app or do you know if there are any Android apps that access Kbin?

brainfreeze,
@brainfreeze@kbin.social avatar

I don't think there's an app-app yet. I've read on here that kbin is fairly new, while lemmy has been around a lot longer.

stopthatgirl7,
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

There aren’t any kbin apps yet, but there are a few in development. The one furthest along is Artemis, and it’s in closed beta testing. @ArtemisApp

musicalcactus, in Reddit kills awards and coins

To what end, I wonder?

I feel like it has to be financially motivated and the only thing I can think of is they want users paying for premium directly rather than having it gifted from a different accounting bucket. But that doesn’t seem like strong enough motivation on the surface.

qooqie,

I have a feeling it’s definitely a blue checkmark in the making moment

stopthatgirl7, in Reddit kills awards and coins
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

So they’re getting rid of coins and awards, but don’t have any kind of replacement actually planned yet?

They should have held off until they knew what the replacement would be. As it is, they’re yanking something that made Reddit unique for…what, exactly?

McBinary,
@McBinary@kbin.social avatar

Applying gold and awards will hold posts on the frontpage even if they're downvoted to oblivion. They're likely getting rid of them as a way of manipulating the narrative.

HipPriest,

The replacement is to pay people with actual money per upvotes awards etc according to some code that was spotted recently

Great huh? That's really going to improve the quality of their content and their profitability... 🙄

EDIT https://www.androidauthority.com/reddit-contributor-program-3343397/

BananaTrifleViolin,

Reddit really is done. This will drive spam and discourage people posting original content as they will see it stolen and reposted by the karma farming parts of reddit. They already flood communities with crap; reddit seems to just be taking another giant crap on the moderators who will have to deal with the tide of people trying to manipulate the new system for financial gain.

The best content on Reddit is not by "top contributors" whoever they may be. It's the random helpful posts that you stumble across or find on Internet seaches, or the thought provoking posts and comments that push back against the hive mind. Generally I find most (not all but most) of the up voted and awarded content to be trash or low value. Moving to financially incentivise that show Reddit really don't understand their own site.

gornar,
@gornar@lemmy.world avatar

I actually improved my reddit experience back in the day by blocking the top creators and checking that top list every few months to make sure it was current. Instantly better!

Rhodin,
@Rhodin@kbin.social avatar

Because paying people to post worked so well for Quora…

jon,

Just curious, what happened there?

HipPriest,

Quora is an impeccable font of online knowledge and we should be grateful for bwahaha no I can't even...

Basically the amount of karma farming that already happens on Reddit is going to quadruple. And yeah it's going to be a) on the more 'serious' questions like Quora and b) on the more AITA or Confessions posts 'oh you guys have helped me so much, of you can upvote me and give me some awards it'll really help get my life on track'

Part of me couldn't believe they'd actually introduce this but in light of everything this year, whatever. Because what else could benefit Reddit ....oh yeah - grifters!

If they want to add fuel to the fire that's burning down the house fine. I'm over at Kbin. I'm staying.

My only regret is there's some really great health support communities there and I hope they can be allowed to live in peace because I don't think they'll feasibly migrate.

Locuralacura,

I’m only on reddit for a few select, very specific communities. If I ever find a replacement it’s over. Help with Immigration laws, teach practices, language learning ECT. I’m thinking maybe I’d like to start the teachers group over here.

bradorsomething,

That’s how this happens. The community is the value, not the platform. Once a critical mass crosses over, the same community can continue.

Locuralacura,

I definitely don’t have time to moderate, I barely have time to scan headlines.

stopthatgirl7,
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

All they had to do was do nothing.

HipPriest,

It's certainly worth paying to hear American views over the rest of the worlds I would say. Reddit is on to a winner with that one for sure. American Reddit users like u/spez are so wise while we are so stupid.

Sailor_jets,
@Sailor_jets@sh.itjust.works avatar

Reddit is an American website… IDK why this would surprise anyone.

abff08f4813c,

A company headquartered in the US but it's a website that has a presence in many countries, including the EU.

Maybe not surprising, but they are probably shortchanging themselves by not allowing folks from abroad to contribute into the program. USians aren't the only content creators.

mightysashiman,
@mightysashiman@kbin.social avatar

but the mentality of the whole platform is very USian centric nevertheless.

abff08f4813c,

Sure, and that's a problem. r/politics was too US centric which eventually drove the creation of other subs like r/animie_titties

There are (or were) a lot of corners that were an exception to the rule, for example I don't think that anyone would argue that r/de was very USian.

itsnotlupus,

Last I checked, there were at least 3 subreddits where cryptocurrency is being handed out regularly to active participants.
They’re called “Community Points”, and get a custom name for each sub (“moons” in /r/cryptocurrency, “donuts” in /r/ethtrader, and “bricks” in /r/fortniteBR.)

I don’t know how the other subs fared, but /r/cryptocurrency became noticeably gamed by actors attempting to maximize their financial gains.

So… I guess it’s gonna be awesome.

Hegar,

/r/cryptocurrency became noticeably gamed by actors attempting to maximize their financial gains.

I can't tell if that's life imitating art or vice versa but it made me giggle!

If I was suddenly dropped into spez's body, I do not have a clue what I would do other than completely back track the past 2 months and eat a literal hat with a fork and knife. Don't know if even that would work.

Whelp, I never used those things anyway.

metalingus, in Reddit kills awards and coins

Was there any indication something like this was coming?

Also, I only learned last 1-2 months during the API fiasco that Reddit had some weird NFT thing going on.. Are they just trying to find anything that will stick?

Chozo,

It's rumored that Reddit is about to launch a new "creator program" that will pay Redditors for high-karma activity on the site. This change is probably meant to accommodate this new feature.

density,
@density@kbin.social avatar

how is paying people going to "keep them profit oriented til profits arrive"?

how could they even have the cashflow to support that? money isn't free anymore

Chozo,

how could they even have the cashflow to support that?

I'm guessing new deals with advertisers. These changes will incentivize more neutral, advertiser-friendly comments on their platform. I imagine that's going to make them more lucrative to advertisers going forward, so that their ads are shown next to harmless memes instead of bad-faith political arguments in cat pic subreddits.

joelfromaus, in Reddit kills awards and coins
@joelfromaus@aussie.zone avatar

One thing I’ve seen a lot of is comments wishing that Lemmy/Kbin had support for some sort of gilding. So it’s obviously a feature that people enjoyed using which means Reddit just has to enshittify it. This is the way.

nicetriangle,
@nicetriangle@kbin.social avatar

Honestly it’d be kinda nice for Lenny/Kbin instances to help keep the servers running without having to do something like ads.

kunic,
@kunic@kbin.social avatar

Precisely. They were a fun thing to give out, and directly helped to pay for server time. I even liked how Reddit would tell you how much server time your awards gave to Reddit (which I think they've removed?).

tjhart85,
@tjhart85@kbin.social avatar

100%, but the Federated nature would make this difficult, I'd imagine.

I'd love a way to simultaneously:

  • show someone I appreciate their comment
  • Help support an instance
  • Help support KBin development

But, outside of crypto, I don't see an easy way to make that happen and doing it through crypto would bring out the crypto bros and mega-anti crypto joe's in about equal numbers, which would suck (plus, who's to say that an instance admin even wants to deal with crypto to collect a few bucks).

joelfromaus,
@joelfromaus@aussie.zone avatar

Absolutely! Server donations are good for a single instance but I think a service that allows users to purchase gold/awards and awards the particular instance (with funds) that they get used on would help fund the Fediverse as a whole. I imagine implementing something like that would not be simple but anything is better than injecting ads.

nicetriangle,
@nicetriangle@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I’m already donating via “buy me a coffee” might as well make it fun to do.

HipPriest,

I think it should be totally anonymous though because otherwise you go down the road of users with special avatars and good knows what

thanevim,

implementing something like that would not be simple

Especially with the idea that an instance a user calls home/registered on would have to be ok with allowing a donation link to go to the instance that the user you're "gilding" is on

density,
@density@kbin.social avatar

let's inventing banking again! the bitcoin people are having so much fun doing that.

falsem,

That was the original pitch for gold on Reddit.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Kbin already has this covered. We can pay monthly to keep servers running via

Patreon and Liberapay.

@Ernest has transferred the existing Buy Me A Coffee money over to the server fund and from this point on we really can buy him a beer via Buy Me A Coffee which is cool!

neshient,

any particular reason why there are 2 monthly payment options?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm not Ernest but my guess is it gives us greater flexibility?

Like, some of us are already active on one or the other of those platforms, plus between them there are lots of different options for amount. I'd never heard of Liberapay but I like how it's a non-profit.

density,
@density@kbin.social avatar

Well there are 49 subscribed people on patreon totaling $170/month. Lots of people probably already have accounts set up which makes it a very low threshold to join.

Meanwhile on librepay, arguably more philosophically suitable, there are 11 subscribers totaling $13/month.

Man, considering how many people I have seen saying how great it is to be able to pay, and asserting they are making donations, those are very low numbers.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I think @neshient is likely to be right. IIRC something like 800 people have been donating via Buy Me A Coffee.

neshient,

Could be because it is less circulated. I had seen the coffee option previously but didn't realise the other 2 options had been setup until I came across this comment.
