There's a bit of learning curve for sure, but people shouldn't overthink the federation aspect too much. At least here on Kbin there is plenty of content already.

BaldProphet, in banning and defederating communities
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

Seems to be popular to defederate from right-leaning instances. The Fediverse basically started as a far-left stronghold, so it isn't surprising.

CookieJarObserver,
@CookieJarObserver@feddit.de avatar

Most instances also defederated from lemmygrad (commies) so its not generally politically left either.

Also there is the problem of liability, if a instance hosts stuff that is legal where their server stands, but isn't where yours is, you basically need to do it. (Burggit.moe for example, also LemmyNSFW)

Porn in general is also defederated by many because its problematic to moderate.

And then there are instances that just brigade a lot or make bots on mass that spam. They usually get blocked as well.

Last but not least, if your instance defederated nothing it will be defederated because its seen as unmoderated (wich could potentially result in illegal activities)

NotAPenguin,

Tankies, not just commies

IMO, Stalinists aren't exactly tolerant either. You're still talking about a totalitarian and authoritarian viewpoint, even if they're on the left on economic matters.

IMO, if your point is to make a community welcoming, then you have to get rid of intolerant voices. That--broadly speaking--means that you have to remove people advocating for any kind of absolutist, authoritarian rules. It's easy to see at a macro level, but it's all fuzzy at a micro level.

BaldProphet,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

A lot of people in the Fediverse don't seem to appreciate the concept that the political left is just as capable of intolerance and extremism as the political right.

    I'm not talking about parties, I'm talking about the political spectrum. There is no "Right-Wing Party", nor is there a "Left-Wing Party". Conservatives and liberals can be found in both of the actual dominant American parties.

    HelixDab,

    Anyone that is familiar with the ways that communism has existed in Warsaw-pact countries, in China, in southeast Asia in general, etc., should be able to see that. LGBTQ+ people were, if anything, even more fucked in most communist countries. There certainly wasn't any meaningful religious tolerance, since religion was banned in at least some communist countries (or wholly controlled by the gov't).

    I'm in favor of communism in principle, but not in practice. I'd love to live in a commune, but I don't think I'd want to live in a communist country.

    The only real issue I have is that searching for communities I know exist on other instances often fails, and opening them in their home instances doesn't offer a subscribe button to my host instance.

    AlteredStateBlob,
    @AlteredStateBlob@kbin.social avatar

    With you on that one. Some small youtuber I have followed for years setup over on lemmy.world. I know it exists, but searching on kbin, no matter what I try, doesn't yield it to me. Unless it hits the frontpage or I am accidentally looking at the new feed the same moment the guy posts there, I won't really have a way to subscribe. Also don't really want to wrangle multiple accounts.

    EnglishMobster,
    @EnglishMobster@kbin.social avatar

    For Lemmy, if nobody has subscribed to a community locally, you need to search https://instance.social/c/whatever to get !whatever@instance.social. Once someone subscribes locally, searching !whatever@instance.social works.

    It's pretty unintuitive, especially when Kbin lets you search @whatever@instance.social even if that community isn't on your instance yet.

    Sync was my poison. I used it enough that I don't feel any particular need to ask for a refund... I got way more than my money's worth out of it. In fact, I'll pay the author again if a new Sync arrives with Kbin support.

    Ohhhhh damn!

    MrGG,

    Sync is an app that not only would I argue was the best Reddit third-party app, but one of the best Android apps in general. And it was made by one guy!

    Sorry, Sync was an app. 😭

    Likewise, I will throw money at the developer when / if he releases something kbin-compatible.

    May, in I don’t understand people who say they can’t figure out Lemmy or KBin
    @May@kbin.social avatar

    I do get ppl saying its complicated. A lot of people dont know much about servers just as a start? (Not that you really have to to use kbin or lemmy.) or know anything about federation or what it mean in this sense. If you ask them what is meant by instance, most people saying so probably wouldn't understand that in this sense even if English's their maternal language. Not even that those people arent smart, just like just because you dont understand a foreign language doesnt mean youre not smart: this is just an area they dont know about.

    I think some people find it strange that people are confused, because maybe they dont often talk with people who arent as familiar with technology, or more used to being on 'tech' related parts of the internet where some people would understand these. It seems this way bc the community of kbin seems to be more into technology, like i seen programmer humor posts get popular a lot, and discussions about linux, and the technology magazine, and stuff like that.

    If so i can see why someone being confused would be surprising. But know that: a lot of people probably wouldnt join other social media either if it was more user-driven (in terms of setup? If thats phrased right?) which is why stuff gets more simplified on official websites and app. Is important to remember that many people (even some my own age!) dont have any context for all of this stuff they would need to deal with and decide in order to use Kbin/Lemmy - dont know what is an instance. What is federation. Defederation. I would say its easy to understand once you try, but i know i speak for myself who already has some knowledge and interest about technology and learn fast. And not everyone even wants to use something that required them to figure it out as they go.

    billiam0202, in Reddit is not a safe space

    At this point it seems likely that Reddit is so incompetent, they just ran a script to check if a subreddit was private and extort the mods if it was, without any check on how long the sub had been private.

    “Magazine” is the biggest offender here. That’s a very unintuitive term.

    To be fair, Reddit's variant, "subreddit", isn't very intuitive either, especially if you don't come from a forum background.

    Big_Dick_Dastardly, in Reddit is not a safe space

    That is just sad. Some subs were the only safe place to chat with others with similar issues.

    jerrimu,

    /r/bigdickproblems was never private

    FuccDiss,

    Never heard of this sub :/

    axtualdave,

    At inception I think it was legitimately a place for guys with oversized stuff to talk. Like, there are actual issues guys with giant dongs have to deal with.

    But it quickly devolved into lulz my girl says my dick is too biiiggg!!!

    FuccDiss,

    Yeah I’ve heard stories. Not as fun and one thinks.

    Peruvian_Skies,
    @Peruvian_Skies@kbin.social avatar

    If it's big enough, you can't even maintain an erection because it requires too much blood. Or wear several types of pants or underwear, or sit comfortably in certain kinds of seats, or sometimes even get the simple feeling that you're done peeing when you are. But "lol I hurt women with my massive 50-inch pecker" gets more upvotes.

    Hyperreality,

    From what I've heard, a big issue is condoms. Length isn't an issue, girth is. Too large or too small and it rolls up and/or is more likely to tear. Like a too small latex glove, except a dick there's nothing to stop the condom rolling up. Cleaning a toilet and the glove tears? Shit happens. Condom tears? Baby or STD happens. Not funny.

    But from what I can tell, a lot of people who post in forums like that are roleplaying having a large dick or gay guys who want to creep on guys with large dicks. People are weird.

    curiosityLynx,

    I'd also like to add that a too small condom for your girth feels like it's trying to bite off your member. Not a fun experience.

    ShadowPouncer,

    The other big problem is that if it's big enough, it may be uncomfortable or down right painful for any partner.

    Again, that's usually more of a girth than a length problem, though too much length can also result in pain. (Bumping into the cervix is, for most women, a rather painful experience.)

    @Rhaedas@kbin.social avatar

    Didn't realize a refund would be a reverse payment, although that makes sense after thinking about it. Not as big of a problem to face if a developer is given more than 30 days to shut things down. Can he seek financial damage for Huffman's rash and illogical decision? Probably not, but not a lawyer.

    comedy, in iOS Reddit app Narwhal not going anywhere
    @comedy@kbin.social avatar

    I wish the narwhal developer luck, but I just imagine his math is off, and when the time comes for a big world event, where power users will be F5-ing and interacting through the app, Reddit will fuck him hard on the pricing. Additionally, power users are going to be his primary audience; after all, most people know the official app sucks, but only the most dedicated will pay for something different. It just doesn't seem feasible.

    RIP RIF. You helped me keep my sanity at the office.

    cassetti, in I still appear on Google and I edited and deleted all my comments, this is BS!

    I'm writing a program and going to wait several months before I overwrite my content - slowly one post per minute. Then after finishing that (over several months), I plan to set the code to slowly delete the posts, one by one.

    I spent years writing content for reddit to share with the world. If they won't share with the world, they won't get a copy either.

    soundasleep,
    @soundasleep@kbin.social avatar

    I want to do something very similar to this!

    1. download all my content (still waiting on that one)
    2. put all my comments on my personal website each with a unique ID
    3. edit each post on reddit to point to the content on my website, that way I maintain control but the internet doesn't lose information

    do you think your software could do this? :D

    cassetti,

    Don't know! I have a bit of experience using Auto-It so I'm going to try and program it to tab through the old.reddit page and edit each post then move on to the next post. I assume using the edit button I could copy all text, then write it to a word document in something like an XML format which could then be imported into software.

    But again, this is all based on theory, I haven't done any actual code or testing yet. Just based on previous experiences making simple programs to access websites and do specific things via a browser to mimic human interactions with the site. It's a very slow unreliable and inefficient way of doing things lol
