Reddit CEO praises Elon Musk’s cost-cutting as protests rock the platform

In an interview Thursday with NBC News, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman praised Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting and layoffs at Twitter, and said he had chatted “a handful of times” with Musk on the subject of running an internet platform.

Huffman said he saw Musk’s handling of Twitter, which he purchased last year, as an example for Reddit to follow

@edinbruh Does anyone treat app reviews seriously?

Anecdotal evidence so take with grain of salt, but it must have some effect cause of how many apps beg you to rate it 5 stars

thingsiplay,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Sentinian True. I don't use Google app store (or Apple) since years and totally forgot that. Maybe the algorithm of the shop will give recommendations based on the ratings.

It won't deter those that are already using reddit on pc to download the app on their phones, but it may deter new users if their first experience is a shitty advertisement riddled app.

Any time an app asks me to rate it, I immediately go and rate it one star.

IonAddis, in Reddit (this is repetitive and has happened before with LiveJournal)
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah.

I’m pretty convinced that Livejournal was Russia’s test bed for weaponizing social media. I think they used it against their own citizens first, and data-mined the English-speaking side to understand how it worked, and took what they learned to perfect the shit-storm of lies on modern social media (on Tumblr/Twitter/Reddit/everywhere.)

SONOFNAT,

can you think of any other countries, that might be weaponizing the internet? or is russia the only one

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Any country that has internet? However, Russia seems to be the most active (or at least best recognizable)

The US ‘just’ capitalizes it.

ininewcrow,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

The more I analyse the news and what is happening in the world as a whole … I don’t think nations matter any more. It doesn’t matter if you say it’s Russian, Ukrainian, American, German, Chinese or even Canadian … the power and influence is controlled by corporations and many of them have way more power and wealth than the smallest nations. They exert so much power that they influence (at least) or control (at most) every nation in the world.

They’re so wealthy and powerful that they can bend, break or manipulate any and all laws of any nation that stand in their way.

It’s not a conspiracy at this point … it’s just an observation.

@kingthrillgore@kbin.social avatar

My economics teacher said it best: It's a conspiracy that occurs in plain sight, and yet people think aliens are conspiracies. They are distractions.

/u/spez idolizes Musk and copies what he does, that’s all there is to it.

HughJanus,

I think you’re probably right but “that’s all there is to it” is a bit disingenuous unless you know something I don’t.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I don't get why you'd think @Temperche is being disingenuous.

HughJanus,

Because I haven’t seen and they haven’t provided any proof of that

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Okay, but maybe don't jump straight to calling someone a liar just because they don't provide proof in their casual comment?

You didn't provide proof in your comment about Reddit losing VC funding due to interest rates, but that doesn't mean you're trying to mislead us.

HughJanus,

Okay well…I didn’t call them a liar so…what the fuck are you even on about?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Sorry for the confusion, I think that's what disingenuous normally means.

Maybe you meant something else though.

HughJanus,

That’s not at all what it means.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm willing to believe you, but when I googled I got the definition in my link, which is what I thought it meant.

Can you maybe tell me what you meant so next time I see someone call someone that, I can bear in mind it has more than one meaning?

HughJanus,

Nothing about the definition you posted implies a lie.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Dishonest and insincere speech isn't lying?

Okay I don't really see the distinction, but I don't think @Temperche is being dishonest or insincere either.

Anyway, thanks for explaining.

They are getting desperate after the many bad decisions that Spez made.

Pandantic,
@Pandantic@kbin.social avatar

This is my thought - many good content creators left and they are now desperate for getting them back. Wiping all awards and coins in the process is an idiot thing to do tho. Seems they’re just making more people mad.

Eggyhead, in Reddit kills awards and coins
@Eggyhead@kbin.social avatar

I never bought coins or whatever, but I had inherited a bunch somehow. I jumped on reddit just now to find an old thread I'd saved and found this in my inbox:

Hello from Reddit,
We’re reaching out because you have Reddit Premium and/or Reddit Coins on your account.
TL;DR: We're making updates to awards and coins on Reddit that we'll complete by September 12, 2023. As part of this, we made a decision to move away from Reddit coins and awards. This includes the 700 monthly coins* and Premium Awards, which are currently part of the Reddit Premium experience.
You'll still be able to use your Reddit Coins until September 12, after which they'll be removed from your account.
Note: all other current Premium perks will still continue to exist, including the ad-free experience.
As we looked at our current awarding system, there was consistent feedback from redditors that stood out – particularly around the clutter from awards and all the steps involved with awarding content. We also learned that redditors want awarded content to be more valuable. With that, we are reworking how great content and contributions are rewarded on Reddit. We will have more updates to share soon.
If you have further questions please check out our announcement post to read more about the update.

  • This perk is part of the paid Reddit Premium experience.

Thought it was kind of funny considering I never once cared about coins in the first place. Just checked and apparently I have "13325 coins to spend." I'm just going to let them go unless someone has a more maliciously compliant suggestion.

IninewCrow,
@IninewCrow@kbin.social avatar

Award a bunch of posts and memes making fun of r/spez

Grimpen,

I can’t think of anything too maliciously compliant. Maybe give Reddit Gold to posts describing how to join Lemmy or something? Awards should boost visibility. It’s at least a little ironic to use Reddit 's own awards to help people escape.

Eggyhead,
@Eggyhead@kbin.social avatar

This is not a bad idea at all. I’ll do a search for “lemmy” and “kbin” at some point tomorrow and throw coins at any of the useful posts I find.

bug, in Reddit kills awards and coins

It’s surprising to hear this; given reddit’s current mass-enshittification I don’t expect to see a change that both improves user experience and reduces the money they’re making. Clearly they’ve got something more sinister planned, but awards were a blight on the reddit experience and had I not already left I’d appreciate this change (for now!)

s_s, in Reddit kills awards and coins

Makes sense to me.

Reddit’s new userbase (Bots) don’t buy gold.

You don’t want to IPO and have to document that one of your 3 revenue streams is decreasing month-to-month.

The strategy is to keep pumping the fake traffic and keep selling the bogus impressions to ad buyers.

SHamblingSHapes, in Reddit's Contributor Program could earn you real money for your Reddit karma

The real story is they’re getting rid of coins and awards. It’s confirmed by a reddit admin, whereas the cash for karma thing is speculation.

theverge.com/…/reddit-gold-awards-coins-sunset

So killing a feature before any replacement is ready; cool. I’m sure those who pay for premium and will stop receiving a stock of coins will see a commensurate price reduction. Right?
