phil299, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Basically my heart is here now and this is where I come for social media , that does not mean I will not use reddit from time to time , but those times are getting less and less, my main reason to use reddit now is to promote lemmy. To give a better idea I spent probably an hour a day on reddit or two or three visits. Now I have not visited for over a week and recent visits have been a few minutes.

johnthebeboptist, (edited ) in What movie did you rewatch most often?

The Thing,

Naked Lunch,

Evil Dead 1 & 2,

The Big Lebowski,

Videodrome,

Alien,

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,

For a Few Dollars More,

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,

Lost Highway & Mulholland Drive,

The Fountain, Pi, The Holy Mountain, El Topo, Princess Mononoke, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Big Trouble in Little China, The Wicker Man (the og)

And I probably watched Donnie Darko and Ichi the Killer enough times as a teen that they both reach the top

God I watch a lot of movies still.

e:typo, not Donnie Dario

This list of yours needs Werner Herzog's Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo in there.

sarahcanary,

Wow, that’s an eclectic mix of rewatches! I’m with you on Alien.

johnthebeboptist,

Lol, haha, I never thought about that. I used to watch a shit-ton of movies as a teen. Got into horror movies, David Lynch and weird stuff early on so I kind of dove into the deep end very early and with no social life there was a lot of time to watch a lot of stuff.

I seem to be having a phase where I don’t really watch movies that much (series more than ever), but when I do it’s usually kind of “comfort food” so I’m mostly watching all-time favorites over and over again.

SilentStorms,
@SilentStorms@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

We have strangely similar taste, I’ve seen all these movies, and they’re all amazing

tomatol, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

FIFA23. Yeah I know it’s a shit game but I just play it for the couch multiplayer experience! Anyway 22 was working great on linux but they added a new DRM so the new one doesn’t work anymore. Hopefully someone can get the next one to run on Linux so I can ditch windows again.

I thought about a proper shit post but I think yours is enough

CYCLR, in Feature request:

Open in new window, as in clicking with the mouse’s middle button?

Pote,

Yes, new tab

RohanWillAnswer, in Can I use Google Play without a Sim card?

Yes,I have an android phone without a SIM card that I use with Google play all the time. It’s never had a sim and has always been wifi only.

Michal, in Can I use Google Play without a Sim card?

That depends on your phone. I have an LG (android lollipop) phone that simply won’t let me use the os without a simcard.

thanevim,

If you feel up for a bit of a project, you might be able to disable that "protection" with adb

Whitehorse, in What movie did you rewatch most often?

The Fifth Element and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

lemminer, in Feature request:
Anon819450514, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

You should go see the github for lemmy-ui. There is feature request to add the weight of the community into account so we don’t only see the most popular post from the biggest communities. github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues

CmdrShepard,

That’d be great. Currently 90% of my feed is /c/memes and while I do find them entertaining, I also miss a ton of posts from smaller communities related to my hobbies that I would engage with more.

Zeth0s,

I blocked meme, shitposting and 196.

All is nicer now.

I liked some of the memes but they were too many

gkd,
@gkd@lemmy.ml avatar

Best solution I’ve found is to block all of that on the main account and just switch over to another account if you feel like seeing the memes.

Anticorp,

I blocked that community because it dominated every feed.

GnuLinuxDude,
@GnuLinuxDude@lemmy.ml avatar

I finally created my lemmy account specifically so that I could browse lemmy.ml again without seeing memes all over the home page!

teawrecks,

Yeah, I had to leave memes because it was my whole feed. I feel like one of lemmy’s biggest potential selling points would be a scriptable feed. There are some small communities I want to see every post in, and other huge ones that I only want to see maybe the top 5 from.

MentalEdge, (edited )
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s also preventing smaller subs from being discovered and growing.

Seems there’s a PR for a “best” sorting option, which sorts by the top post from each sub, and then the second place post from each sub, and so on.

Sounds perfect.

HollowNotion,

I haven’t looked at the PR, but if it’s really that simple, that doesn’t seem like the full solution. I don’t particularly want a sub with 10 users popping up on the front page after 3 upvotes just because it got to the top of that sub. Sub weight, as mentioned in the top comment here, should probably be taken in to account.

MentalEdge,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

That’s honestly exactly what I would want.

neo,
@neo@lemmy.comfysnug.space avatar

Then don’t subscribe to that 10 person sub?

HollowNotion,

Doesn’t stop them from showing up via All and Local, which is what I want to do without having the completely block these communities. Just my preference.

neo,
@neo@lemmy.comfysnug.space avatar

I’ve unfollowed /c/memes for exactly this reason. Not that I don’t like them, but I wanna see “literally anything else”

allmond226,

The problem is I mostly use lemmy(or reddit before) on mobile, so sadly all this neat stuff doesn’t help me

MentalEdge,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

The sorting systems are server-side, not client.

morrowind,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

If web adds it, it is likely many apps will follow suit. It’s all open source after all.

AlaskaMan,

That’s bloody brilliant. I hope it’s implemented soon.

Laticauda, in Feature request:

This sort of question is better meant for the support community I think.

mad_harlequin, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

Basically visual arts software and some writing software. Additionally I have a free version of Ableton Live Lite 11 (so one music-making application as well) that came with my keyboard.

I mostly do photography, writing, and other visual arts type work on my two computers. I use quite a few photography and painting applications (Photoshop, ArtRage, Rebelle, Lightroom, Inspirit, and a few others; I’m also looking at BlackInk), as well as Scrivener and MS Office when I’m writing. I don’t know if any of those run well or at all in Linux or in Wine, etc. Also I stopped flirting with learning programming and there wasn’t much point maintaining a Linux machine after that. I think Linux is better than Windows all around, and I hate Windows, but it’s just because I use certain apps and from what I’ve heard and seen the Linux apps just aren’t as good.

TLDR, creative software that won’t run on Linux (to my knowledge, anyway).

dessalines, in Best options for Non-Google cloud storage as of 2022?

Don’t use cloud storage at all, use syncthing. If you really need a lot of disk space, that’s going to be the cheapest anyway.

Resolved3874,

What’s the difference between syncthing and just setting up a NAS? basically just not having to buy the hardware and using the computer you already have?

ipipip,

Not having to setup and maintain an additional machine would be my guess. So yea exactly what you said

Resolved3874,

Makes sense. I would want it to back up my main machine somewhere though. I guess I would have to go cloud or finally bite the bullet on a NAS.

Sombyr, in In which game did you spend the most hours?
@Sombyr@lemmy.one avatar

An MMO called Mabinogi, but only because it’s literally designed to suck as much time and money away from you as possible without you noticing. Steam says I’m nearing 5,000 hours, but more than half my playtime was from before it was on steam, so it’s probably closer to 12,000 to 13,000 hours. I haven’t even reached the end game yet.

At this point, I don’t really play it anymore. I think from now on I need to start avoiding games that are gonna absorb that much of my time for so little progress. Definitely wasn’t mentally healthy because I wasn’t even enjoying myself a good way in, I was just addicted.

reksas, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Not really, I try to avoid it even when something i’m looking for is there, though sometimes I just cant be bothered to look elsewhere. I hope someone gathers all the useful information from there into archive somewhere, in case something happens to it.
