dvdnet90, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@dvdnet90@lemmy.world avatar

Yes with modified Apollo and Boost. But, nowadays, many of my Reddit subs seems get a lot of double post, scam ads. if this problem overwhelms my home feed. I will ditch Reddit

christian, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?
@christian@lemmy.ml avatar

A good quality Detroit-style, like from Buddy’s or from Frank’s in Wyandotte a little Southwest of Detroit, those are my favorite pizzas. If I’m getting something cheaper like Jet’s though I actually prefer the round.

8565,

Frank's is my favorite lol

Borderline whether it should count as pizza but the prosciutto pie is crazy good.

Saigonauticon, in [SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?

This is a major failing of the school system.

The best I can recommend is that you try out jobs now – but maybe skip anything ‘fake’ like online courses unless you think they prepare you for what’s in the next sentence. Go find people professionally doing a thing you might like, and try to work with them, somehow. Internships, volunteer work, organizing events, etc. File paperwork and make coffee, if that means you get to see the work actually being done.

Barring that, do the thing yourself if possible. Publish the results. All code goes on public repositories, all stories should be submitted to magazines or literature groups. All songs written must be sung in public. Get certified for CPR and first aid if considering medicine, and volunteer using it. Get an amateur radio license and build a radio. Look at jobs on a freelancing platform, and just do them on your own to build a portfolio (maybe actually apply for the jobs, once you have a portfolio). Not every type of job can be tried out this way, but many can.

You’re going to get rejected a lot, you can’t just show up with a resume and demand a job (people who claim this works are weird). People who create and do nothing will mock you sometimes. A lot of jobs want young people ‘out of sight and in school’ too. However, this kind of disappointment happens to all of us at some point anyway, so may as well get it over with.

If you’re lucky, you’ve got a few years between the age of say 14 and 19 where you’re not expected to support yourself financially but your brain works as well as it’s ever going to. While it’s useful to get good grades while you’re in school (although they are useless afterward), I think it’s a mistake to focus on that at the expense of actually trying to do things. A college degree is too big of an investment of time and money to go into blind.

If you’re in a situation where you do have to support yourself or your family before finishing school, then the necessities of life obviously take precedent. I won’t pretend I have a good solution to that difficult situation.

ProvokedGamer,
@ProvokedGamer@lemmy.ca avatar

Thanks. I don’t have to support myself financially before finishing school. I’ll take your advice for doing and trying stuff.

hamster, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

Learn to make it yourself! It's not that bad. You can probably use premade pizza dough from the store or a local pizza shop.

jimmy_shoe, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

Never had it until recently. We tried it from a place called Pi-Squared Pizza in Hendersonville, NC. It was great, and we’d like to try it from other places now.

I’m 42. I’ve never remembered a dream in my life.

Darn, you’re missing out on something awesome. Have you had sleep paralysis at least? Those are also cool. Scary but cool.

Voiden, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

Shout-out from Rochester, NY! There’s a restaurant called Pizza Wizard here with some seriously delicious Detroit deep dish

TheAndrewBrown, in I feel like /c/memes has taught us a valuable lesson today: Would it make sense to develop a feature to block a comm from our feed for a selectable unit of time (1 hour, 1 day, etc.)?
@TheAndrewBrown@lemmy.world avatar

Personally, I wouldn’t want them spending precious development time on this when you could just block the community and set a reminder on your phone for whenever you want to unblock it.

zalack,
@zalack@kbin.social avatar

I think better algorithms wouldn't be a waste of developer resources. At the end of the day, the post feed algorithm is the core product, IMO.

Figuring out how to lower the weights on highly active subs is a good idea. As is ranking smaller subs' content appropriately.

For all it's faults, Reddit's algorithm was pretty good. There was always a decent mix of small and large subs on my feed.

Kbin's post ranking overall seems better than Lemmy's and that was a major factor in me choosing it as my home base.

dingus,

I don’t want them blocked outright, though. I just want better feed algorithms. It shouldn’t just be whoever spams the most takes over my entire feed. The number of posts from any given community that show up in subscribed, local, all, etc. should be limited so that smaller communities aren’t pushed out of existence.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I just prefer sorting options that don’t weigh posts. Like New or New Comments. I don’t have nearly as many similar posts appearing on the front page sorting by New Comments, and only posts with high levels of discussion stay on the FP.

If you’re going to sort by things that count all metrics to determine what’s “popular,” it’s always going to be memes and low effort bullshit.

s6original, in What goes good with American Cheese?
@s6original@lemmy.world avatar

Classic grilled cheese.

There are a lot of ways to cut cheese. Just sayin.

Wickedlucky214, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Absolutely. Deleted account.

AngrilyEatingMuffins, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

4,167 hours of DOTA 2.

Holy shit. Glad I quit.

MaungaHikoi,

Come back to us comrade. I have over 6000 hours now and it’s still great. I’ve been playing since TI2 though so it’s only like 600hr per year average.

Raise_a_glass, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

A place in Austin texas called Via 313. It is fantastic pizza!

pinkpatrol,
@pinkpatrol@anarch.is avatar

I’ll have to give it a try

Chozo,

I love Via 313, but it's gone downhill in recent years, unfortunately. The wait times are ridiculously long, the prices have skyrocketed, and the quality has lowered. Honestly, I could deal with the lower quality if either the price or the wait time went down. It's bad enough paying $15 for a small pan pizza, but it's even worse when it takes 90 minutes to get to you, after you've already been in line for 20 minutes.

Though, that's true for pretty much all the pizza places around here. They've all just gotten progressively worse, and it's really sad. :(

BourbonLaser, in What goes good with American Cheese?

My family has a recipe that uses it to make the sauce creamy and delicious as others have mentioned. It's super quick and easy to make since it's mostly canned foods. It may not be gourmet, but it is definitely comfort food in a pinch. It's called Tallarine.

1lb ground beef
1/2 medium onion diced
2 cloves garlic... or more
1 can stewed italian tomatoes (sometimes I add a can of spicy peppers like jalapeño to be more like a Mexican dish)
1 small can of sliced mushrooms (I usually leave these out)
1 can whole kernel sweet corn
1 small can sliced black olives
1-2c uncooked egg noodles depending on how noodly you like to get
4 slices American Cheese

Brown the beef with onion and garlic. I usually throw in some salt and pepper here. Add all other ingredients except the cheese. Add some water of it's too dry. Cover and cook until the noodles are tp your preference. Add the cheese and stir until melted and mixed.

Haters gonna hate American Cheese "Product", but it can sure make some tasty dishes.

Just unsub if you can’t handle the power of the memes

scarabic, in What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

“Get into the housing market while you can.”

My brother, mid 2005.

axolittl,

oof.

scarabic,

Yep. Bought a residence for $500k and two years later it was worth $330K.

MrMonkey,

How much is it worth now?

scarabic,

Sold it 5 years ago for somewhere in the 700s. So ultimately it turned out okay. But there was an extremely awkward period where I had to move out and would have sold if it wasn’t underwater. I wound up becoming a landlord for several years which I wouldn’t have chosen and felt pretty scummy but it did save me in the long run.
